got your authors crossed.

Gary Maddox does Blaster Master (software).

Sound Blaster Digest is published by Brad Barclay from somewhere in
Canada... I think the main distribution site is a board called Musical
Chair or something like that in Toronto (?)...

-> Also does anyone know what that big chip with creative labs name on
-> it (and

  SoundSmith are the IIGS equivalents of the Amiga NoiseTraker files. SB
owners can play NoiseTraker files with TrakBlaster. The IBM equivalent
of the Amiga NoiseTraker is the ScreamTraker. As for conversion
programs, the only one is MOD to STM and that isn't much help since
there are already players available for both.

        Mod files are some kind of Amiga music file which you can play
on the IBM with a Sound Blaster. They have digitized instuments which
sound very real. Now, STM files are the IBM version of MOD files. STM
files are much better and require less CPU work and are better in
quality unlike MOD files... The realism in the sound is very good. With
the adlib, you load up a sound for snare drum and it sounds like a beep
or something but if you load a MOD or STM digitized sound of a snare
drum, it sounds just like one.

TS>  # 1 What should I get

SoundBlaster.

The Adlib is a good card and can generally be had for $40 or so less
than the SoundBlaster but is limited to straight 11 voice FM music only.

The SoundBlaster is fully Adlib compatible, so you will be able to enjoy
the sounds in some of the older games that only support the AdLib, but
in addition to that, you can get up to 24 voices with true stereo (CMS)
with the SoundBlaster on the music side. It also handles digitized
sound, this means you can play all of those wonderful Macintosh, et al
sound files out there and get some very realistic sound effects in your
games in addition to the music. And on top of that, it has a microphone
port so you can sample your own sounds. Other features that it has
that Adlib does not is built in voice synthesis, midi port, joystick
port, and built in amplifier (so you dont have to buy pre-amped
speakers)... You get *alot* of additional capabilities for the money.

TS>  # 2 where should I get the " Thing "

Most major chains and distributors now carry it. Buy it wherever you
buy the rest of your hardware.

TS>  # 3 and apx hou much $$ should I pay ????

A good price for it is $149, dont pay more than $175.

Use Gary Maddox's Blaster Master. It's a superb shareware program that
will make your life much easier if you are into sampling.

It's a hefty download, but well worth it.

-> Do you have both?
->
-> If you do, tell me, how was it on Space Quest IV, to have both a
-> Roland & Sound Blater?

First, you may not remember, I am an editor and writer in the industry.
That comes with certain perks. Secondly I run a quality assurance
company that tests entertainment software for a living. We have MANY of
ever sound card available.

My home machine has both a Roland LAPC-1 and a Sound Blaster running to
a Realistic 32-1200C Mixer (the best one they have) and that runs into a
Realistic SA-150 Amplifier. The mixer is a must to get sound out of
both cards at the same time. The cheaper mixes didn't work very well
either. The amp has been great, it has a headphone jack and a volume
dial among other things right on my desk so no reaching behind the
machine.

To date, the best games I have played that uses both the Roland and
Sound Blaster running at the same time are Shanghai II, Carmen Sandiego
Deluxe, and Space Quest IV.

Sierra did a fantastic job with the score as usual and the mix was
excellent. It is definately the best of both worlds. I understand the
less than one tenth of one percent of the sound board owners are this
fortunate. For such a small group I glad to see new games supporting
dual sound cards.

-> # 1 What should I get

Depends on your monetary means and your needs. The Sound Blaster is
basically a VERY enhanced AdLib card. Everyone I have recommended it to
(and as an editor that's alot of people) has had nothing but great
things to say about it. If money is tight, then consider no less than
the AdLib. Also, if money is no object AND you are a musician, then you
may want to consider a Roland board (either the MT-32 or LAPC-1).

-> # 2 where should I get the " Thing "

Mail order is fine, Sierra also has them at great prices as well as
Tele-Mart and SoftWarehouse.

-> # 3 and apx hou much $$ should I pay ????

Sound Blaster can be had for $149, AdLib for $99 and any Roland about
$395+.

-> I am working on a senior project at my college. I need to
-> generate sound effects with a Sound Blaster to simulate those of a
-> space shuttle (rockets, thrusters, etc...). What is the best way to
-> accomplish this? I have the development kit for the SB but couldn't

Why not use the most effective and impressive feature of the Sound
Blaster, the digitizer? You can bypass days of frustration fiddling
with FM sound effects and go straight to ACTUAL recordings of the space
shuttle itself (if you have access to a video tape). Also, MANY CD's
are available at any good music store that have dozens of pre-recorded
sound effects. Listen to a shuttle lift off, then find a closely
related sound of the CD. Just run a cable from a CD player into the
Sound Blaster and record at will.

The programmers kit explains how to work with samples so you should
really consider this option. What's better, a simulated FM sound effect
or an actual recording of the real thing?

Exactly .... if you're talking about the SAA1099 chips ... these chips
originally came with the old Sound Blaster - but were removed as a feature
to save costs [and the price if anything went up!] ... you can get them
for 6$ .... they add Gameblaster compat ...

There is a reason for everything, and it's the same in this situation.
Creative Labs REPLACED the CMS chips with the Text-to-Speech capability
and that has a slightly higher cost than the CMS chips.
