HAYES SOLUTION FOR HIGH SPEED COMMUNICATIONS
ATLANTA, GA., October 30, 1989 - Hayes Microcomputer Products,
Inc. today announced Hayes V-series ULTRA Smartmodem 9600. ULTRA 96
provides high speed, CCITT V.32 full duplex 9600 bps dial-up
communications and CCITT V.42bis for data throughput to 38.4 Kbps. By
being compliant with a comprehensive set of the most advanced CCITT
standards and supporting the most frequently-used modem industry
technologies, ULTRA 96 provides compatibility with the majority of
modems installed throughout the world.
ULTRA 96 is designed for global distribution and offers
worldwide connectivity. In addition to being compliant with CCITT
V.32, the product supports CCITT V.22bis, V.22, V.23, and V.21 and is
compatible with 103, 212A, and Hayes V-series Smartmodem 9600 fast
turnaround "ping-pong" protocol for 9600 bps and 19.2 Kbps throughput.
Targeted for the Advanced Business Use market segment, ULTRA 96
offers advanced features such as error-control and data compression.
ULTRA 96 provides compliance with both CCITT V.42 LAPM (Link Access
Procedure for Modems) for point-to-point error-control and CCITT V.42
Annex A for backward compatibility to modems with MNP 2-4. The support
of LAPB (Link Access Procedure Balanced) provides point-to-point or
point-to-multi-point error-control with X.25 networks and compatibility
with the original Hayes V-series system product protocols.
The recent effort of the CCITT has resulted in V.42bis, the new
international standard for data compression, which offers a distinct
performance advantage over previous data compression techniques. CCITT
V.42bis brings to ULTRA 96 four-to-one throughput to 38.4 Kbps. Many
advanced business users are interested in implementing V.42bis for the
increased throughput, and since ULTRA 96 is compatible with modems

Feature Overview
Hayes V-series ULTRA Smartmodem 9600
ULTRA 96
ULTRA 96 includes a complete set of the most advanced CCITT standards
and supports the most frequently-used modem industry technologies. The
features provide compatibility with the majority of modems installed
throughout the world by addressing Modulation, Error-Control, Data
Compression, Telephone Line Interface, Packet Switched Network
Connectivity, Modem Control and Operations, Transmission Modes, and
Global Availability.
Modulation
CCITT V.32 - Provides high-speed 9600 and 4800 bps communications using
CCITT V.32 modulation. ULTRA 96 implements Trellis Encoding/Viterbi
Decoding, a V.32 forward error correcting technique which allows the
modem to transmit data accurately at high speeds, even across noisy
telephone lines.
V-series Smartmodem 9600 "Ping-Pong" - Use of the Hayes V-series fast
turnaround "ping-pong" protocol enables ULTRA 96 to communicate at 9600
and 4800 bps with the installed base of Hayes V-series Smartmodem
9600s.
International Data Transmission Standards - In addition to CCITT V.32
(9600 and 4800 bps) compliance, ULTRA 96 also supports CCITT V.21 (300
bps), V.22 (1200 bps), V.22bis (2400 bps), and V.23 (1200/75 and
75/1200 bps) transmissions.
Industry Data Transmission Compatibility - ULTRA 96 also supports
communication with 103 (300 bps) and 212A (1200 bps) modems.
Error-Control
CCITT V.42 - Supports standardized, point-to-point error-control
communications using the CCITT V.42 LAPM (Link Access Procedure for
Modems) protocol. V.42's alternative protocol provides backward
compatibility with modems using MNP 2-4.
V-series LAPB - ULTRA 96 provides error-control compatibility with the
installed base of V-series modems using Link Access Procedure Balanced
(LAPB). In addition, LAPB provides link-level error-control for access
to Packet Switched Networks using X.32 (Dial X.25).
Data Compression
CCITT V.42bis - CCITT V.42bis international data compression standard
for use by modems incorporating the V.42 LAPM error-control standard
provides compression capabilities to 4:1 enabling ULTRA 96 to achieve
throughput to 38.4 Kbps.
Hayes Adaptive Data Compression (ADC) - ULTRA 96 implements ADC with
the installed base of V-series system products to attain compression
capability to 2:1 for throughput to 19.2 Kbps.
MNP 5 - ULTRA 96 provides a migration path to V.42bis data compression
by supporting backward compatibility with modems using MNP 5 for up to
2:1 compression.

Assembler/Disassembler) in the modem by implementing 1988 versions of
CCITT X.3, X.28, and X.29.
Hayes AutoStream - Supports up to four simultaneous virtual sessions
using the Hayes AutoStream protocol to support and manage the sessions.
Smartcom III communications software - Implementation of the Hayes
AutoStream protocol in Smartcom III allows users to easily establish
and conduct up to four simultaneous virtual sessions.
Modem Control and Operation
Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Full support for this industry standard
enables ULTRA 96 to operate with the large installed worldwide base of
communications software.
Automatic Feature Negotiation - ULTRA 96 automatically negotiates with
other modems to analyze all features available (modulation,
error-control, data compression, etc.) to establish the most efficient
communications session. This powerful capability is implemented
transparently, making ULTRA 96 exceptionally easy to use even though
its feature set offers a wide range of capabilities and communications
options.
Automatic Speed Buffering - Allows a V-series modem to provide a fixed
speed interface between the V-series product and its DTE (mainframe,
mini-computer, PABX, or PC). This enables the V-series modem to
communicate at varying speeds with other modems while communicating at
a fixed interface speed if required by its attached DTE.
Flow Control - Works with systems equipped with flow control to manage
the interface between the modem and the system to control buffers and
preserve data integrity, preventing inadvertent data loss between the
modem and the system.
Transmission Modes
Asynchronous Hardware Mode - Supports standard asynchronous
communications for dial-up communications with value added networks,
on-line services, and personal computers.
Synchronous Hardware Mode - The modem supports SDLC, HDLC and Bisync
synchronous transmission for connections to mainframes and
mini-computers. A PC using a synchronous adapter card is also
supported. In addition, the modem supports several methods of
synchronous autodialing, including CCITT V.25bis.
Hayes AutoSync Mode - ULTRA 96 can use the system's standard
asynchronous communications port for synchronous communications,
eliminating the additional expense of a synchronous adapter card for
SDLC or Bisync. This convenient feature brings both asynchronous and
synchronous data transfer capability to your system in one
communications device.
Global Availability
