The following is a summary with a quoted extract from "The Times" of
London, U.K. (Monday 2 May 1994) of an article entitled "California
drive to legalise marijuana" by "Giles Whittell in Los Angeles."

Encouraged by the relaxation of German drug laws, Latter-day hippies (or
"zippies", as those on the Internet prefer to be known) have launched a
campaign to legalise the drug in California within the year. The
California Hemp Initiative claims to have 250,000 of the 385,000
signatures needed to put their Bill on the state ballot in November. If
approved by more than 50 per cent of the voters, the proposal will be
automatically passed into law, bypassing the state legislature.

"Beside legalising the personal use and licensed sale of the drug, the
initiative would require the destruction of criminal records for
marijuana-related offences under the state's existing laws."

[Comment: I have never heard of the term "zippies" before. Is this an
Americanism which we Europeans have yet to encounter?]
