KlanWatch's "Special Militia Task Force Edition" is a new low in left-wing McCarthyism!
KLANWATCH'S "SPECIAL MILITIA TASK FORCE EDITION" IS A NEW LOW IN
Members of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership Denounce
Dees' Militia Report.
25 MAY 1995
Klanwatch's June report titled "Special Militia Task Force Edition"
is dead wrong both in its stated particulars and in its wildly
exaggerated and irresponsible conclusions.
There are so many errors in it that one wonders if Dees' much-vaunted
investigative skills have fallen into disuse with age or have always
been so sloppy and inaccurate.
As former longtime admirers of Mr. Dees' work against racist and
antisemitic groups, we have been appalled at his broad-brush
characterization of all militia groups as racist and anti-semitic,
or as infiltrated by racist and antisemitic leadership. While it is
true that there are some long-time and well-identified racist and
anti-semitic groups creating new "militia" identities, our research
has shown that such groups have made little or no inroads into the
mainstream militia movement, which springs from a quintessential
American concern for Constitutional rights and suspicion of an
overbearing Federal government that seeks to infringe those rights.
Indeed, most militia groups took great pains, even before the
Oklahoma City bombing, to declare their intent as not merely
non-racist, but anti-racist and anti-Nazi. Mr. Dees presumably has
read the same literature that we have, so his continued broad-brush
attacks on the militia must spring either from some secret, omniscient
insight into militia intent that we lack, or from a desire to exaggerate
and inflate the old Klan bogeyman to refill his organization's depleted
coffers from the pockets of newly-frightened well-to-do donors.
Mere sloppy scholarship or simple greed would not be so dangerous if
it were not being practiced by Mr. Dees as leftwing McCarthyism in a
highly charged political setting that now exists after the Oklahoma
City bombing. The "Militia Hysteria" is now being played up by Mr. Dees,
New York Congressman Charles Schumer and others as an excuse to further
circumscribe Americans' constitutional rights in very dangerous laws
such as the Omnibus Counter Terrorism Act, et al. But the danger of
Mr. Dees' irresponsibility is not just to American rights, but to
individual Americans who are being unjustly characterized by
Klanwatch as racist, antisemitic proto-terrorists. In the atmosphere
that Morris Dees is doing his best to whip up, law-abiding individuals
who have joined militias for perfectly reasonable and legal reasons
are now the victims of suspicion and paranoia from employers and
neighbors and the targets of law-enforcement investigations.
Indeed, Dees is doing his best to further the atmosphere of persecution
and paranoia by advertising a "hot line to report militia activity".
Of course Joe McCarthy died before the era of "800" numbers, but if
the House Unamerican Activities Committee had operated a
"Turn-In-A-Commie" hotline, or if Gov. Wallace had advertised a
"Denounce a Negro Lover" telephone number at the Alabama State
Troopers, Morris Dees (at least the OLD Morris Dees), would have
been first in line to fight such a travesty. Today, he operates one.
Beware of the man who is paid to tell the truth, whether he is a
police snitch or a polished lobbyist for a point-of-view, for sooner
or later the truth becomes "information" and a commodity for a
weekly paycheck. We stand ready to provide a line by line, fact
by distortion analysis of this latest example of "Militia Hysteria"
