WHAT IS ELECTRONIC DIRECT MARKETING ?

Electronic Direct Marketing is the future of direct
marketing. To become an electronic direct marketer you need a
computer and a modem and some time to learn things.

                               WHAT IS A MODEM ?

A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device which plugs into
your computer and phone and allows you to transmit and
receive information from your computer into telephone wires
to be received by other modems and computers. Because of
modems, people are now able to send each other messages and
         programs without leaving their computers.

                                WHAT IS A BBS ?

A BBS (Bulletin Board System) is a large message-sharing and
information-storing computer system with many phone lines and
modems to be able to handle a large traffic of incoming and
outgoing messages. You use a BBS to communicate with a group
of people instead of just one person at a time. For example,
I (Robert Steward) will soon be setting up a BBS dedicated to
alternative (natural) health information and health products.
This creates a community of people who can all learn to dial
a single phone number (mine) to communicate with each other,
to talk with me, to receive information files about various
aspects of alternative health care, to buy products from me,
and to contribute their stories, advice etc. to the BBS for
me and other members to read.

The overwhelming majority of BBS's are a "GOLD MINE!" from a
marketing perspective because they have more than 1000 people
regularly using them. There are a few BBS's (Prodigy, GEnie,
Compuserve, America Online) that have hundreds of thousands
of regular users on a daily bases.

WHAT (OR WHO) IS A SYSOP ?

A sysop (system operator) is the guy or gal who operates the
BBS. There are currently over 100,000 BBS's in North America.
Some systems are maintained by a single sysop. Some BBS's,
however, are huge (and rapidly growing concerns) such as
Prodigy, GEnie, Compuserve, America Online, and Delphi. These
are serious large-scale businesses and require dozens of
sysops and technicians to maintain. Some now advertise on TV.
Bigshot BBS's are a rapidly growing industry.

WHAT IS UPLOADING AND DOWNLOADING AND "LOGGING ON" ?

"Logging on" is the process of calling a BBS and telling it
your name and password when it asks you. After that happens,
you are "in" the BBS. If you are calling a BBS for the first
time, you will go through an introduction procedure where you
will choose a name and password for you to be able to "get
         in" in the future.

You are "uploading" a file or message when you contribute it
to a BBS. It must be approved by the sysop; once it is, all
the other people logging onto the BBS will be able to see
         your file.

You are "downloading" a file or message when the BBS sends it
to your computer, by your request.

You can read your E-mail (electronic mail) without any actual
uploading or downloading procedures. E-mail is a function of
all the large BBS's and some of the smaller ones. You will
have your own E-mail address for each BBS you belong to, as
well as an Internet E-mail address.

                             WHAT IS THE INTERNET ?

The Internet encompasses most of the large BBS's and lots and
lots of the smaller ones, too. It's a meta-BBS. You can get
onto the Internet (you will have your own Internet address)
         via a smaller BBS.

It's becoming increasingly possible to log into a local BBS
and avoid long-distance phone charges while getting onto the
Internet, or even onto other large BBSes. Also, the larger
BBS's are "setting up shop" in several large cities so that
more and more people will be able to log onto them without
paying the long distance phone charge. Or pick up a local
computer newspaper and bug the experts until they tell you
the best way for you to get into the Internet for free.
WARNING!: try the smaller BBS's first. The Internet can be
intimidating and difficult to use in comparison.

HOW CAN I USE MY COMPUTER AND MODEM TO MAKE
MORE MONEY AS A DIRECT MARKETER ?

You can advertise in certain sections of Compuserve and other
BBS's. That's the easiest way to do things.

Advertising can be more tricky on BBS's which are devoutly
non-commercial. Most BBS sysops are allergic to marketing, or
at least it seems that way. They feel exploited when someone
uploads a blatant sales pitch to their BBS; they want their
BBS's used for exchanging programs and technical and personal
messages, and (to an alarmingly large extent) dirty pictures.
But! * By uploading an informational E-Book with a EXE-File
most BBS's will allow it to stay on their System. It is
within this E-Book that you can make your sales pitch for
the INFORMATIONAL! materials that you choose to offer.

You could start your own BBS. You can be a marketer-sysop,
unlike the traditional non-marketing BBS operators. You can
advertise your own products on your BBS as much as you like,
and sell advertising "space" to others. But there's just one
thing - you'll have to have a computer and a modem dedicated
to your BBS. You can't use it for anything else, because you
need to (eventually) leave your BBS program running to handle
incoming calls 24 hours a day. And you will have to "man" the
controls yourself for several hours a day to answer messages
sent to you, to send out messages, update your system, etc.

                    WHAT IS A BOOK-ON-DISK (VIRTUAL BOOK) ?

A book-on-disk is a set of data files (chapters) on a disk
which constitute a complete book. There is also a file on the
disk which drives the book, presenting a menu so that you can
choose which chapter to read, or to indicate that you are
finished reading the book. You actually read the entire book
off your computer screen instead of from sheets of paper.
Books-on-disk can be sold as disks, or they can be compressed
into single files and transmitted directly from computer to
computer through BBS's or directly from one computer to
         another using modems.

WHAT ABOUT TRANSMITTING PLAIN OLD DATA FILES ?

A good idea; use plain old data files in addition to books-
on-disk, by all means. These are more versatile than books-on-
disk, because books-on-disk are executable (.exe) files which
will only run on one type of computer after being downloaded,
transmitted or shipped. ASCII data files are simply a string
of characters which any computer - Mac, IBM, Amiga, Apple,
etc. - can make sense of. Hence, your prospect will receive
your sales pitch no matter what sort of computer he or she
         owns.

To clarify: I could upload an IBM book-on-disk program to a
BBS, and when someone with an Amiga downloaded it, it would
be no use to them at all (unless they have a utility which
allows their Amiga to emulate an IBM). But if I simply
uploaded a message, the Amiga user would have no problem
         reading it.

TIPS FOR GETTING ONTO BBS'S AND NOT GETTING KICKED OFF

Sysops are less likely to refuse an actual program
(executable file) than a simple text file disguised (or not
disguised) as a sales pitch. Book-on-disk technology lets you
literally create programs in minutes for this purpose.

Sysops are human, and another thing that might convince them
to let you advertise is if you let them have a piece of the
pie. Let the orders come directly to either him or you, and
give him a percentage. Actually, BBS subscribers will be less
likely to send nasty "Get your add off our BBS!" E-mail to
you if the sysop himself puts up the message. So maybe the
best offer you could make to a sysop would be "Sell my stuff
on your BBS and keep half the money for yourself".

                     T H I S IS T H E B E S T W A Y

Another option: Become known as an expert in the "forum"
(special interest group area) of the BBS you want to make
money from. For example, you could go into a forum for
marketers within a major BBS and dazzle everyone by answering
their questions brilliantly and offering all sorts of
guerilla tactics you've learned from your direct marketing
experience. This is a way to gain the forum's confidence and
make it easier to sell things to them later. Or offer a Free
DISK! to a special interest group - they will have to send
you a Self Address Stamped Envelope to receive it, or you can
E-mail it to them and save the printing and postage costs.
(but you should try to capture their street addresses, too).
