Anyone with more information can contact me at the above address.
If you do, please try to list all songs on a disc, the record
company's name, the year, and the record number. Thanks.

Notes: the term "LP" simply denotes a long-playing (i.e. full-
length) "album," and doesn't designate media (CD or vinyl). Song
lists for bootlegs reflect the actual songs (where known), and so
don't always match the songs on the label, which are frequently
wrong.

I. LPs

'Pretty On the Inside' (Caroline, CAROL 1710-2) Fall 1991. Songs:
"Teenage Whore" / "Babydoll" / "Garbadge Man" / "Sassy" / "Good
   Sister/Bad Sister" / "Mrs. Jones" / "Berry" / "Loaded" /
"Starbelly" [1] / "Pretty on the Inside" / "Clouds" [2] Also
released by City Slang in Germany, SLANG012.

POTI ranked No. 20 in Spin's list of the 20 Best Albums Of 1991.
Melody Maker (Dec-91) ranked #13 in Melody Maker's list of the
top 30 albums of 1991 "...a relentlessly apposite hardcore
grind.." Alternative Press (Jul-95) ranks POTI No. 74 of the 99
   best albums of the decade.

'Live Through This' (DGC, DGCD-24631) Spring 1994. Songs: "Violet"
   / "Miss World" / "Plump" / "Asking for It" / "Jennifer's Body" /
"Doll Parts" / "Credit in the Straight World" [2] / "Softer,
Softest" / "She Walks on Me" / "I Think That I Would Die" /
"Gutless" / "Rock Star" (aka "Olympia" [20]). Also released by
City Slang in Germany, EFA-04935-1. The album went platinum (1
million copies sold) in June 1995, and has garnered many great
   reviews and awards [21].

The singles from 'Live Through This' so far have been "Miss
World," "Doll Parts," and "Violet." A promotional "flat"
produced at around the same time as the album's release,
however, lists the songs "Miss World," "Asking For It," and
"Violet." It's possible these were the original choice of
   singles.

Courtney has mentioned a couple of working titles for Hole's next
album: 'Celebrity Skin' and 'Use Once and Destroy.' Hole will
tour with Lollapalooza during the summer of 1995, and hopes to
start recording the new album in the fall of '95, possibly in
New Orleans. Some new songs have been written and performed live
(see the Unplugged and Bootleg sections for examples).

Courtney on the next album: ...there are songs about abortions,
about slashing her arms with razors, about imagining her own
funeral in New Orleans, about rock stars cheating on their
wives, sex... "It's hard to write about sex, and the sick part
of the Kurt relationship and the good part: (lyrics) 'My messiah
gave me one last kiss/And then went into the abyss/I don't know
if it's good/I don't know if it's bad? Poor baby, poor baby,
poor baby/ But you left me alone.' This one is good: 'Just do it
baby/Kill me now/Without you I'm Judas and there is no point'
and this one 'I'm in a sick contest/I think I'll win' and then I
quote Blanche in Streetcar: 'Put a shade on that lamp/I'm gonna
be sick/I'd rather die than end up alone.' These are not the
greatest lyrics...the best line is: 'Have you ever seen a
   cripple dance?/Well now's your chance/Now's your chance.' ...I
know exactly how I want it to sound: I built it in my mind, like
a circle. The top end I want to be warm, Crazy Horse,
Harvest...the middle strip is really Alan Moulder, with strong
song-writing. Like what Billy [Corgan] did with Siamese Dream
but more so and less so. Textured, super-textured. The bottom
part I want to be the gnarliest, Black Sabbath meets
   sampling...gnarly and deep and hard."

There's a rumored Hole appearance on an upcoming Joy Division

is the song will be "She's Lost Control," since they've been
   performing it live recently.

'Hole' EP, (Frances Bean's College Fund) 1993 or 1994. Black vinyl
with pink labels showing Courtney's face; no number or writing
on labels. Pink sleeve with photo of Hole on the front and

Rue, E. Erlandson," though I think this is probably wrong -
Emery and Rue weren't in the band in 93 (see PeRsOnnEL), so
either the personnel or date is wrong.

'Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana' (Michael Azerrad,
Doubleday) October 1993. Covers Kurt and Courtney as a couple,
but not really a full Hole or Courtney Love background.

   to her founding Hole.

X. CoVer SoNgS PeFoRmeD by HoLe

"Chocolate Boy" actually "Hot Chocolate Boy" by Beat Happening.
   From a 1991 London session.

"Circle 1" By the Germs. From a 1995 single as "The Holez" (from an
   unreleased Germs tribute album).

"Clouds" Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now" with, I believe, some
alternate lyrics. On 'Pretty on the Inside'. Note that the
song's original title is "Both Sides, Now" (it's spelled with a
comma on the album cover); it was originally released on Joni's
_album_ 'Clouds' (Reprise, 1969). The song closed out the album,
just as it does 'Pretty on the Inside'.

"Credit in the Straight World" by Young Marble Giants. On 'Live
   Through This'.

"Do It Clean" by Echo and the Bunnymen. Performed in concert, and
   released as a B-side.

"Drunk In Rio" An unreleased Kurt/Courtney/Patty song, recorded as
a Kurt and Courtney duet in Rio de Janeiro, January, 1993.
   Performed in concert.

"Forming" By the Germs. From a 1991 London session.

"He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss)" by the Crystals, 1962.
Written by Carole King. Performed in concert (e.g. at the end of
"Violet" on Saturday Night Live, 17-Dec-94, and on Hole
   Unplugged).

"Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran. Performed in concert, and on
   Hole Unplugged.

"Into Your Arms" by The Lemonheads. Only a small, 5 second bit of
the song was played. Performed in concert, 7-Nov-93.

"Over the Edge" by Greg Sage and the Wipers. On 'Fourteen Songs for
   Greg Sage and the Wipers.'

"Pale Blue Eyes" by the Velvet Underground. Performed in concert
and due to be released on the 'Ask For It' EP.

"Pennyroyal Tea" by Kurt Cobain. Performed in concert. But see note
   [13].

"Season Of The Witch" by Donovan. Performed at the Hole Unplugged
taping, but not included in the initial telecast.

"She's Lost Control" by Joy Division. Performed in concert.

"Skinhead Girl" by Unrest. Performed in concert. This is a cover of
a song titled "Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl" by Unrest on their
   'isabel bishop e.p.' EP (4.A.D.,9 45271-2) 1993. There's a
unconfirmed rumor that it was also covered by Nirvana as "She is
   My Skinhead."

"There Is A Light" by The Smiths. Performed in concert at the
Claphan Grand, London, 1993 (possibly 15-Jul-93).

"The Void" by The Raincoats. Released on some "Doll Parts" singles.

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" aka "In the Pines", traditional
(Appalachian folk song, 1870s), attributed to Leadbelly.
Performed in concert. Also covered by Nirvana, on 'MTV Unplugged
in New York' (DGC, DGCD-24727) 1994, and Mark Lanegan of the
Screaming Trees, on the LP 'The Winding Sheet' (SubPop, SP061)
1991, with Kurt Cobain supporting. Hole was playing this song as
   early as Fall 1991.

"You Got No Right" (aka "You've Got No Right") by Kurt Cobain
   (unreleased). Performed on Hole Unplugged.

Assorted covers from Hole's Spring '95 swing through the U.K. These
are summarized because I'm not sure how many are just snatches of
songs and how many are full versions. Also the NME seems to get
alot of song names wrong: "RIP" and "Closing Time" by Love/Cobain;
"Making for 16" by ?; "Cars" by Gary Numan; Human League covers;
opening chords to "Fascination" and "Don't You Want Me Baby;"
several a capella Smiths songs, including "Girlfriend in a Coma;"
"Passionate Friend" by The Teardrop Explodes; Big Country's "Big
Country" (sung by Eric!); "Happy Birthday" by Altered Images;
"She's Lost Control" by Joy Division.

b. BaNd MeMbeRs' BioGrApHiEs

Courtney Love was in a band entitled Sugar Baby Doll (possibly also
called Sugar Babylon, or maybe that's a different band). ". . . one
night, Kat, Courtney, and a friend named Jennifer Finch [bass
player of L7] . . . went to see a show featuring Frightwig, an all-
girl punk-rock band. . . . 'You're too ugly to be in a rock band!'
one of them [hooting young men] yelled. Kat looked at Courtney, and
Courtney looked at Jennifer . . . inspired by Frightwig, all three
decided on the spot to form their own girl band. The name was Sugar
Baby Doll, and it didn't last long. 'Kat kicked me out of the
band,' Courtney remembered. 'It was the first band she kicked me
out of, the last being Babes in Toyland.'" [17] This was the early
to mid 1980s.

Courtney was also in Babes in Toyland playing bass circa 1988, and
was briefly in Faith No More (circa 1990?), possibly on keyboards.
"Q: Courtney - did you ever record anything when you were in Faith
No More, if so, will we ever get to hear it, bootlegs or
otherwise...? C. Love: Yeah, we recorded the gothest version of Bye
Bye Love." [18]

Courtney was also "in" Nighty Night, a fake band: "She's [Patty]
got a riot grrrl band called Nighty Nite. We did this scam during
the riot grrrl period where me and Kurt and Patty pretended we were
two sisters from Marysville, 17 and 16, Dottie and Clara. We put
the pitch way up on the 4-track and we made up these really stupid
songs like 'Lemonade Nation' and 'Twister' and 'Hello Kitty', just
crap like that. Sent the tapes out to all the appropriate people;
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL, Kim [Gordon] and Thurston [Moore], Bikini Kill,
Fugazi, Calvin [Johnson, of K records], Slim Moon. Huge buzz. Huge
buzz. [Q: What'd you call yourselves?] Nighty Nite. Knapsack was
second contender. 'We want a lemonade nation revolution and we want
it now!'" [16] This must have been circa 1992 or 1993.

Melissa Auf Der Maur is from Monteal, Canada, and was in a Montreal
band called Tinker.

Patty Schemel drummed in the band Sybil. They released a self-
titled EP (eMpTy records, MT-159) 1991. Some pop star came out with
the name "Sybil" so they changed their name to "Kill Sybil." In
1992 they released the "Fairlane" EP (eMpTy records, MT-182). There
also was an album (MT-183), released in January 1993, though
Patty's two song appearances were recorded in March 1991. Other
band members included Robin E. Peringer on bass, Dale Balenseifen
on guitar, Tammy Watson on vocals, and Larry Schemel (Patty's
brother) on guitar.

Kristen Pfaff was in a band called "Janitor Joe" on the Amphetamine
Reptile label. Kristen is listed as playing bass and vocals on
their debut album "Big Metal Birds" (Amphetamine Reptile, 014),
recorded December 1992. She also appeared on a single, "Boyfriend"
(Amphetamine Reptile, 902). Kristen did not appear on the last
album, "Lucky" released in 1993 (or 1994) though she helped promote
the band during their tour. Kristen joined Hole circa 1993, and
died 16-June-94.

Leslie Hardy plays bass in a Seattle band called "Juned," who put
out a self-titled debut album in 1994 (Up, UP007). The band's
leader, Dale, used to be in Patty Schemel 's previous band, Kill
Sybil. Apparently, Leslie wasn't in Hole very long, just three
weeks or so in late 1992.

Jill Emery plays/played bass in the punk band "Super Heroines." The
band released one album, 'Love & Pain' (Cleopatra 3751). She was
also in Shadow Project, with Eva O. Jill is currently in Mazzy
Star.

History
The rock band Hole, in addition to writing and recording its fab
new long player, Live Through This, played a week of dates last
summer with Nine Inch Nails to get back to their goth roots. With
those roots firmly in place Hole embarked on a fall of tour of
North America where they headlined. While finishing up their tour
the band learned that their album went gold in the U.S. There was
much rejoicing.

The band then appeared on Saturday Night Live's Christmas show.
The band exchanged gifts with host George Foreman - Patty takes the
heavyweight championship belt that Foreman gave her everywhere she
goes.

1994 changed to 1995. The band decided that they were tired of the
cold winter. In January, Hole went to Australia - where it was
still summer - and played a whole bunch of dates. Next were a few
dates in Japan where Eric became a hero to the Japanese for reasons
that no one can explain. Hole returned to the States where they
showed their soft and sensitive side by playing an acoustic show
for the MTV Unplugged series - an old roommate of Courtney's, Hal
Wilner, helped with the sound for the show.

Selected Press
The Los Angeles Times said in a four-star (their highest rating)
review that Live Through This "packs intellect, humor, volatile
emotion and recklessness inside churning and contagious melodies --
a combination that makes it the year's most complete album yet."

This was just the beginning of the praise heaped on the band from
the music press. By year end Live Through This was named album of
the year by Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Spin, Option, and the
mother of all critics polls - the Village Voice's "Pazz and Jop"
poll.

Things You Might Not Know About Hole
The rock band Hole can hold its liquor. The band's music is
emphatically non-aligned with any current agenda, movement, or club
in rockdom, except maybe the one Glen Danzig got kicked out of for
taking steroids. All members of the band can read. The band's new
album is better than the rest of the stuff you have piled on your
desk (put together). Your preconceptions are all wrong. Your
shoelaces are untied, or loose. You can't start over.

Information Concerning "Live Through This"
Recorded in Atlanta, GA, at Triclops Studios (same place Smashing
Pumpkins recorded Siamese Dream). Produced by Sean Slade and Paul
Kolderie. Famous R.E.M. producer, Scott Litt, mixed five of the
songs. J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
mixed one song without ever having met the band or listened to its
music. All songs written by Hole. All artwork by Courtney Love.
Relevant quote: "It's easy when the music is more in your face and
aggressive," says Eric Erlandson, "but now we've made a pop
record."

Cheap Ways To Endear Yourself To The Rock Band Hole
Hit Eric in the face real hard, then snort derisively and say, "You
call yourself a boxer?" Compliment Courtney on her pretty dress.
Tell Melissa she plays bass like a girl. Drone on and on about
some gender-based rock theory you read in the Village Voice. Ask
Patty repeatedly to smile more.

XIV. ThE BaNd "Courtney Love"

There was a _band_ called "Courtney Love," named after Courtney
Love Cobain [6]. The band consisted of Lois Maffeo and Patrick
Maley. They released two 7" records on K records ('Uncrushworthy'
and 'Highlights'), and a 7" on Feel Good All Over ('Hey
Antoinette'). They are also on the 'Kill Rock Stars' compilation.
After apparent lawsuit rumblings, the band broke up. Lois now
fronts the band 'Lois' and Patrick Maley is at YoYo Studios in
Olympia, Washington.

EnDNoTeS

1. "Starbelly" starts off with the main riff from Neil Young's
"Cinnamon Girl," then segues into voices, sounds, and snippets
of songs. "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac is heard, as well as
either "Lashes" by Babes in Toyland (from 'Spanking Machine')
or an early version of "Best Sunday Dress." [10]

2. A cover song. See Section X, Cover Songs Performed by Hole.

3. Kristen Pfaff is not listed or pictured on this recording,
although Courtney, Eric, and Patti are. There's a picture of a
woman with short black hair on the back: bass player Leslie
     Hardy.

4. This was formerly referred to as "Never Go Away." It's real
title emerged at the Hole Unplugged performance.

5. "I'm So High" is a coined song title. This song is an
expanded, full-song version of the "Gregorian chant" that's
the lead-in to "Credit in the Straight World" on 'Live Through
This,' and "Old Age" on MTV Unplugged. It has the lyrics:
"...I'm so high I cannot walk, I'm so high I cannot talk... "

6. According to david.smay@sfnet.com: "According to Lois Maffeo,
when she was a roommate with Courtney (before she was calling
herself Courtney Love) they had a running joke about 'Courtney
Love' as the perfect superstar name. Lois took it for her
band, and Courtney took it for her stage name. The band was
     not named after the person."

7. This is based on Courtney's Rolling Stone interview (RS 697,
15-Dec-94) and the Unplugged set list. "You've been doing one
of Kurt's unrecorded songs during the encore on this tour...",
"There's the one we're going to play tonight [either Buffalo
or Montreal]. Melissa sings my part, and the part I'm singing
is Kurt's part. I just call it 'Drunk In Rio.'" The song on
the tape seems to have a dual-lead vocal, unusual for Hole.

8. Very likely "Sugar Coma." See note 4, above.

9. MTV News, 29-Mar-95.

10. Some of the lyrics used are the same as a section of "Lashes,"
by Babes in Toyland, but the melody is very different.
Courtney identified it as a new song called "Best Sunday
Dress" at Hole Unplugged. "...No, she [Kat] wrote 1/4 of one
half of a riff, it's 1/3 an old Sugar Baby Doll song." -
     Courtney Love, via AOL, 15-May-95.

11. Some have said that this record was never made, and was a joke
inserted (by Jim Greer, no less) into a Hole discography in
the past. It was a Geffen biography of the group, but was
dropped in later versions (such as the one reproduced here).
The author would love to hear from anyone who knows more about
this, or who has this record (if it exists).

12. This is a coined song title, provided by Twilight.

13. Courtney's mention of Kurt's authorship of "Drown Soda" is
corroborated by an article written by Neil Strauss in the 18-
Feb-95 'New York Times.' This contradicts the Hole EP 'Teenage
Whore' and the 'Tank Girl' soundtrack, which credit the song
to Hole. There are other differences between published
songwriting credits and Courtney's inside information: "Old
Age" is credited to Hole on the 'Beautiful Son' EP, and
Courtney has said she and Kurt co-wrote "Pennyroyal Tea."

14. According to audience members, a shot of the paper set list on
'MTV Week in Rock,' 10-Mar-95, and the screen titles of Hole
Unplugged. Oddly, the paper set list is titled "Hole Set
List Mon. Feb 13 6:30 PM."

15. This is exactly how the title was written on the paper set
     list.

16. Courtney Love interview, 'Superock,' MTV, 8-Apr-95

17. Neal Karlen, 'Babes In Toyland, The Making of a Rock and Roll
     Band.'

19. "Whose Porno You Burn (Black)": this new song contains lyrics
from Burn Black, and also lyrics like: "Where is the bullet,
where is the gun...where is the razor...". It's issued on the
German 'Violet' EP. It's also been unofficialy referred to as
"Burn Black (alternate version)" and "Fascinate Your Life
Away," but now we know the real name.

20. Rock Star v. Olympia - the following is from 'Boston Rock,'
June 1994 (via LTT Zine #1):
"...Most eerily prophetic of all is a song that didn't make it
onto the album [Live Through This], even thought its title
did. The track listed on the CD as 'Rock Star' is really a
song called 'Olympia.' The real 'Rock Star' is a catchy ditty
inspired by riot grrl band, Bikini Kill, on which Love
imitated the Lemonheads' Evan Dando. A question about its
musical authorship bumped the song off the disc after it was
too late to change the album artwork. Kolderie [one of LTT's
producers] says 'Rock Star' would make a great single, but the
song may never be released. One look at a few of the lyrics
     and you'll understand why:

How'd you like to be a rock star?
Lots of fun to be a rock star
     I think you'd rather die
but I bet you'd like to try.
How'd you like to be in Nirvana?
Barrel of laughs to be in Nirvana
How'd you like to be in Nirvana
     I think you'd rather die.

Though Love's lyrics now seem ominously presaging of Cobain's
suicide, they were merely a product of her obsessions with
death, dismemberment, crime, punishment, drug use and self
abasement. 'Those are the things that are interesting to her.'

Rumors are now beginning to swirl around the music biz that
Rock Star may appear on an upcoming release from Caroline
records featuring pre-'Live Through This' material [see 'Ask
For It' EP, section II -RS]. Guess we'll have to wait and
     see."

No. 1 Album, 1994, CMJ

Entertainment Weekly (15-Apr-94, p.56) "...what you take away isn't
a guitar riff but Love's voice. A thick reedy instrument that
makes her sound like the younger, brattier sister of Johnny
Rotten, it stands out like a suited IBM executive at
Lollapalooza....[Love] has charisma and attitude to burn, and
     she knows it...." Rating: B+

that, it's the way she dares to fashion from the lies she
can't escape, a story she can call true...."
