I realize how confusing these posts get, and take
responsibility for failing to precede the last quote
with a ">" The numerous > and : marks makes
reading, not to mention typing, the posts a horror
(Something to which I need to be more attentive).
PLEASE, be more careful when crediting quotes, etc. to

Subject: Re: NMS1091 ( Heavy Metal CD!!!)
Hi Kids,
Let me start with a question about something I saw in one of the last NMS
postings. Did I see something about an unplugged with the guys from up north.
If I did, when and did someone record it? I have been thinking that it would be
great for them to do one, except I didn't think that they were into that
commercial crap that it has become. Back about 7 years when Jon Bon did the
first one, I would have though someone would have asked them to maybe do one.
Now it seems that everyone is doing it and it has become a bit commercial.
Enough of my 2 cents on that item.
Second: In the NMS1091 ( W.Collier) metioned about the Don Kirshner Rock
concerts from the 70's well I remember them, and I used to watch them all the
time. After was the Midnight Night Special, which was great also (showing my age
here). Well my question, does anyone have a copy on VHS of RUSH on the DKRC? He
also mention the soundtrack to Heavy Metal out on CD finally. I would gladly pay
someone if they could send me a copy. I live in Germany and have been looking
for that CD for about 8 years.
Ok now for a lesson in German, for Steven Horiwitz. In his posting in the NMS
1091, he started with "Mein Froinds", well the correct spelling is "Mein
Freund". This is not a FLAMEING, which seems to be the norm lately. I was just
giving a little german lesson ( HA HA) .
So everyone have A GREAT Day...

Subject: Obscure Rush on the Radio
Hey there, fellow Rushians, just wanted to inform y'all of an obscure
Rush song I heard on the radio while heading for Myrtle Beach, S.C. this
past weekend. When the DJ announced a tune by Rush after a commercial
break, I was expecting probably "Tom Sawyer" or "New World Man" (which I
heard on the radio earlier in my trip), but instead, it was "The Trees"!
What a delightful surprise! It was the first time I heard that song
played on the radio. Oh well, just felt like sharing that with
everyone.

Bravo to John Tanguy for pointing out the issues raised in "Lock and
Key" and their relevance to the Oklahoma City bombing. I've always
interpreted the lyrics in precisely that way - that we have to trade
off our desire for security against the benefits of a free society.
I too hope that a horrible incident like that one does not lead us
(as the drug "problem" has) to start ripping up the Bill of Rights.
All of this also reminds me of how tight the lyrics are in HYF. Like
RTB especially, the lyrical themes run all the way through.
Hold your fire - relevant to both militias and the BATF!

>That first album is so distinct from any of the others, it's almost like

>a lot of Led Zeppelin stuff?
I have a confession to make...after about 15 years as a Rush fan, I have
NEVER heard their first album. I've heard some of its tracks on ATWAS, but
it's been several years since I've listened to that (I'm more a fan of the
newer stuff, Hemispheres on up).
So anyway, I was driving home late the other night, flipping radio stations,
and I fell right into the instrumental jam in Working Man. And it blew me
away! At first I didn't recognize it, and I was saying to myself, "GOD,
these guys sound like Rush!" and then, as my head proceeded to bounce
repeatedly against the roof of my car, "This can ONLY BE Rush!" Finally old
ATWAS memories came back to me and I realized it WAS Rush, but it was the
first time I'd heard the song with Rutsey rather than Peart.
Anyway...what did I start out wanting to say?...oh yeah, that first album
most definitely DOES sound like Rush. Also, I've gotta buy it as soon as I
can! Also, I think Rutsey's gotten a bit of a bad rap. True, he's no Peart,
but that works both ways: he played with a straight-ahead edge-of-control
frenzy that Peart could never do. I liked the studio Working Man a lot better
than the ATWAS version. Makes we wish I could go back in time to catch some
Rutsey-era Rush shows at some small, dark, smoky club and watch them tear
the walls down!

There's been a lot of talk about the Don Kirschner shows lately. My
personal guess is that VH-1 won't play them, but you never know.
I happen to have both shows on video tape and would have no problem
taping them for people. If you are interested, send me email. I would
have to charge, but just for the cost of the tape and postage.

Hi All,
Just read my first NMS and had to put my $0.02AUS in!!
Firstly, in reponse to the Countdown thread where someone was saying they
remember being in the 6th grade. Hell, I was in my 3rd year at Uni and
had the same thoughts. (the same ones I had when my folks picked me up
from school in the 3rd grade and took me home to watch the moon landing.)
It only goes to show how music (good music) can reach all ages.
As for the music, for me there are certain parts of certain songs
that send a chill down my spine every time I hear them. Mystic Rhythms,
especially the middle eight and into the guitar solo does it for me.
Everthing about this is magical, bass, synth, drums and especially the
guitar with the little backwards fills. This also happens in Twilight
Zone and The Enemy Within. (It also happens in the guitar solo of U2's 11
O'Clock Tick Tock - what this says I don't know, but I hope you can see
what I'm driving at.)
Thanks for listening. I know Rush will never tour DownUnder, but
it's still one of my dreams to see them live. I'll just have to schedule
my holidays with the next tour! :-)

What do you think of the season so far? Is Geddy happy?

Subject: Boston & Rush
Ok ok ok
I know it's a RUSH newsgroup, but my 2nd favorite band is BOSTON. After
reading the comments in the last edition, I have the following to say:
1)Live Boston sounds just like their records (Foreplay is usually kinda
sloppy). Typically everything sounds perfect.
2) Tom S. is, perhaps, one of the best recording engineers/producers
around. Remember that the first Boston LP was basically recorded in his
basement. And, After all, he made the crap on the fourth CD sound decent.
Unfortunately, he is not a great musician. He's a good keyboardist, but he
needs a quality supporting band.
3) I hope that the rumor about Brad Delp rejoining the band is real
4) Any threat of a new LP?
Back to Rush....
I am a hack bassist. I luv to play, but realize that I don't have the gift
of doing anything with it. However, I can hear talent and Geddy is the
best that I've listened to. Too many bands have the bass hidden in
background and it is usually muddled without life or character. Geddy
attacks his songs and is always heard.
Geddy's playing is what turned me onto Rush and my impression of the band is
that the bass is the lead instrument. Alex is a great guitarist, but
Geddy's style is similar to a lead guitarist. It's almost like a rock &
roll role reversal. Generally the Bass plays the rhythm and the guitarist
takes the lead. This is why I like Rush.

P.S. anyone know where I can find the Boston Bootleg called Found in the Trash?

All I have to say is I HOPE you are kidding! I really, really, REALLY hope
you're kidding! "Signals" and "Grace Under Pressure" are two of my favorite

Disguising a little Fun-With-Titles as misguided Rush-bashing. The Country

Hi Rushies,
It's been a long time since my last post. I have two things to say.
1. If you want the Presto song in concert, how about invite David
Copperfeild to make Rush dissapear while they are playing, but we could
still hear them of course, and make them reappear floating over head while
still playing.
2. Boston's fourth release "Walk On" is a truely good albumn and if you
were a real Boston fan then you should appreciate it because even if you
don't like the album at least you'll be able to see them in concert.
Isn't that what really counts?

Savatage: weird. definately weird. very good piano peices in it though
i had their conceptt/story album which i found to just drag on.
i don't think i ever thought much of rush when i was listening
to them, there are certainly much heavier.
White Trash: Cool music. I really dig the blues and horns style.
i do have a warning though->the album i had had nothing but
sexual lyrics (except for one cool song) all more or less
demeaning to women. I would more readily promote this band
if they found some better lyrics. as for any connection to rush?
i could not find any...

least talented one in the band?
Do any of you run into this misconception? I find that
because he isn't the star lyric writer or "front man", Alex gets
ignored.
I'm looking foreward to this solo project, and hope to
hear some non-Rush like stuff from it, like David Gilmour
compared to Pink Floyd. About face is a great album that
sounds almost nothing like PF.
What do y'all think? Does Alex get the short end? Should
his solo work be more Rush instrumentals, or do you want to see

Subject: "Rush Through Time" picture disc
Hi all,
I have run across a vinyl picture disc with the above title. I am
wondering if anyone has ever seen this before. Is it live? The
songs on it are from the usual setlist circa 1977, but with notable
exceptions: The Twilight Zone and Making Memories. If anyone has
any info on this, or can tell me how I can find out about it, please
let me know (direct e-mail, please.)
Thanks,
Brett Gentzel

Reading the previously mentioned interview with Alex Lifeson in Guitarist (UK
May) he refers to Neil having just released his own record. I'll now have to
admit to not always reading all my NMS's (two girls under 3 will dance to
Rush but the NMS as a bedtime story ?). Can anyone fill me in please ? Mail
to NMS or direct please.
Thanks

Petrucci may go on to influence a lot of guitar players, but it isn't truly
'his' influence...
Check out the speed freaks of the mid-eighties, starting with Malmsteen and
McAlpine (sp?), and ending most notably (I hear a lot of this dude in
Petrucci's playing) Jason Becker. Becker used to do a lot of goofy time
signature changes, a la Rush (all at the ripe ol' age of 18)...check out
'Perpetual Burn'. I thought this style of playing was dead and buried until I
heard Dream Theater.
OK, enough non-Rush content...

Subject: lightning crashes and the music industry
Apologies to straying from the subject, however-
In response to Steven Horwitz's comment about the Live song
"lightning crashes" being a possible all-time classic, I have to agree,
contentwise. However, it seems by the inherent nature of the music
industry to support pop-style and whatever the unintelligent listeners of
America want, I don't see it happening. If the average listener could
distinguish talent and ability from absolute crap (rap and other genres)
then Rush would be heralded as one of the all-time greats and jazz
stations would average more than 50 listeners. Instead, albums like
Snoop Doggy Dogg's start out at the number 1 spot when they are released
and Rush concerts and albums are heavily criticized by reviewers. So,
although Live definately has an extremely impressive song on their hands,
I think it will likely be drowned out enough so that by this time next
year, the majority of Americans will have forgotten it. Oh well.

Well, this is my first time here, so be gentle.
I've noticed many of you wanting other bands to cover Rush tunes. Here's
my two cents:
Natural Science : King's X
2112 (live, of course): Dream Theater
Face Up: Queensryhe
YYZ: Primus (I'm dyin' to hear them finish this...)
La Villa Strangato: Ozric Tentacles
I guess that's it for now.

Mein Froinds -
The hard rock station in Ottawa (The Bear 106.9) has a new promo
campaign trying to show how they are the real rock station in town.
It consists of a voice-over saying "This is rock" followed by a clip
from some song they play, then another voice-over saying "This is not"
followed by some cheezy song.
The latest one has "This is rock" followed by the opening of "The
Spirit of Radio", with "This is not" followed by "Dancing Queen" by
Abba.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Hey Billy, long time no talk. Well, it seems I have been all over the place.
Two weekends ago I drove my mother across country to Florida, she is now
living there. I still haven't found a place to live myself yet, so I am
staying at my sister's, at least for another week.
I have a new office, at Third Encore Rehearsal Spaces in North Hollywood. My
phone number there is (818) 755-7930, and my fax/modem number is (818)
755-7963. and my pager number is, of course, (213) 426-6756.
My computer is also here with me at Third Encore, you should stop by one day.
Talk to you later.

busy I've been, I'm just getting around to updating them for the

appreciate any suggestions or complaints about my choices or ordering
for any of the three tapes. Thanks.

BTW, does anyone know of a NIN mailing list??????????

Apologies in advance to the lack of Rush content here (or tangential at
best) but what you wrote strikes me as pseudo-intellectual snobbery of
the lowest order. You imply that in order to understand politics you have
to be in an elite order. Why is it that because Neil "writes songs for a
living" that somehow lessens the validity of the things he says? It's
that kind of elitist and exclusionary thinking for the last 5 millennia
that has gotten us into the mess we're in today.

Neil answered that question in the Backstage Club Newsletter once. He
said it was some tape of Aimee Mann's voice running backwards, but that it
contained "no backward masking, or whatever those lunatics call it!" Ergo,
she's not saying anything comprehensible!

WRONG!!! Being a HAM radio operator and knowing morse code when I got ths bute

YYZ the whole way through the intro. The rythm may be off for the correct
