Well, due to a slight oversight some of the rush lists only had one
name in them! So many people probably did not get digest #1102, which was
part 2 of the "Rush" book. It basically means anyone with an email address
between M - O and S - U didn't get this digest. If you did not, please
PLEASE instead of asking me for a copy, mail to the rush-srv account!!
It's just as good, and much much faster than I would be.

To get this digest, mail to: rush-srv@yyz.com
Put as your subject: Digest.1102

It should be sent to you within a few minutes.

I did this some time ago (e-mail me if you want the list), not
because I was bored, but because it makes a great mix of songs to
listen to. I actually made a set of A-Z tapes a couple of years ago,
and it makes for some interesting listening. The only problem is
whenever a new album comes out, the tapes aren't complete anymore :(

Subject: Toronto Visit

Hi
I just came back from Toronto last night; I was there for the North by
Northeast musical conference and concert that ran from 6/15 - 6/17. Since
I was there, I just had to go by the Orbit Room; 580a College st., the blues
bar owned by Alex Lifeson. I managed to drop by thursday night around 6:00
and the place was empty. I asked the bar man there what was going on later
that evening an he informed me, since he noticed I had a RTB concert shirt
on, that thursday nights are Alex's night ... he usually comes and plays a
set or two with the house blues band. Well, you can only imagine how fast
my heart started pumping .. I had to sit down. Of course there's always a
BUT right? and his BUTs were 1) Alex had not come in the past two thursdays
since he has been recording his solo album (which by the way is new rock,
no 70's shit) and 2) he wasn't sure about tonight because Alex had not called
there .. though he thought this was a good sign since Alex in the past only
called when he wasn't coming in. So, I caught my breath, thanked the guy,
and went back to my hotel. I showed there about 9:30 later that evening to
have dinner (great food BTW) and pray that Alex was either there or coming.
The house blues band came on and played a set and near the end of the set, the
keyboard player (playing an old Hammond organ .. nice) mentioned that we
should'nt be fooled by the mellow music, because "it was thursday night and
was all know what happens on thursday night ... the second set will be much
louder". I looked at my friend with bulging eyes and yelled "yeah", of course
hoping he meant that Alex was next. Well to make a short story long, Alex
never showed but I did get a chance to sit and talk with the band and Alex's
son for about 10 minutes. He told me about Alex's new release, which should
be out during the summer, and about Geddy's new baby and what when he thinks
they will begin writing and recording their next record (fall). We was pretty
cool since he must get tons of rush fans going up to him. Anyway, that's
a wrap ... the moral is: If you go there, go on Thursday and hope they aren't
lying about Alex just to keep you in the place ... take care.

Subject: Presto lyrics- some questions

Greetings fellow Rush fans. I haven't posted in a long time. I decided to do
so in case the digest was a little short, being that the summer months are
upon us. I have a few questions about certain lyrics on Presto, my favorithe
album after HYF. In an earlier NMS the line from War Paint talking about the
mirror always lying was discussed. I never fully understood that. I have my
ideas, but I am curious to hear what some of you think. I am sorry if this is
covering old ground, but I never felt that I got the meaning Neil was trying
to convey. Another song that I have thought about is Presto. Why did Neil
start it with such a profound statement and what does that statement have to
do with the subject of the song, which to me seems to be about the ups and
downs of romantic relationships? Also, he states "I sometimes have a second
sight" and "my memory has a second sight." Is there a reason for making these
lines different? If so why, and what do the lines mean? I guess that is about
it for my questions. I'd ask a couple more, but I don't want to come across
as being dense :) I just have a hard time getting the entire meaning of songs
and poems. I would appreciate any thoughts on these matters. Either post your
response in the NMS or e-mail me directly at nelsonrx@aol.com Thanks in
advance. Sincerely, Nelson

Subject: The Best of Neil Peart

My brother's a drummer, a pretty good one at that. He's not as much into
Rush as I am, but agrees that Neil is a pretty good Rock & Roll drummer.
He likes the BFB disk, and I've played him a bunch of stuff from Rush.

However, he lives on the East coast and I live in California, so I want to
make him a tape entitled "The Best of Neil Peart".

My question for you guys is, what would you put on this tape?

For material, I have every Rush album that they've released, and two
bootlegs, "Northern Heroes" and "Temple of Syrinx".

I know I'm putting the Drum Solo from the Northern Heroes disk, as well as
the Rhythm Method and the live YYZ with solo. Should I include things like
Didacts and Narpets? What do you all think?

Thanks for your help, and I hope this will turn out to be a great tape
(tapes?).

Firstly, it's spelt abacab. Secondly there are still good tracks
after that (Home by the Sea for one). Thirdly, Abba songs were very
well written. Fourthly, this is a Rush list and all of the above is
irrelevant :)

A quick word about Alex; Progressive. That's why nobody rates him. He
changes styles from album to album and doesn't fit into one area like
Eddy Van Halen etc does. That's why He and Rush are still going, and
still great.

I just saw Echolyn last week. You are right, they did sound nice and
tight...very clean. But their songs...blech. Sounded like a *bad* mix
of ELP and Queen, to me (Don't ask me how I came up with that...it just
*sounded* like that). I couldn't wait for them to get off the stage.

I recently picked this one up on a trip to Ontario, and it's the best Cp
recording I have, although a full show boot release would still be nice. It
was the last copy the store had, unfortunately. I really love how it
captures the feel of a Rush concert - sure the sound could be better, but
listening to it takes me back to the Rosemont Horizon like you would NOT
believe. Don't misunderstand me, though, that was where *I* saw Cp, not
where L,S, and B originated.

On another Rush note, I popped into the Orbit Room while in TO - it was very
nice, and I was glad to see it wasn't just a "look at me and my guitars"
shrine other rock stars might have made it. Just a great spot for a little
late dinner and some good live music, eh. Fantastic job, Lerxst.

With a wave of the wand to the #p/g!-ers,

     Some thoughts:

So, Alex doesn't "stand out" as a guitarist.
Rush is not a "Guitar Band", much as we make them out to be.
Geddy is the star, since he sings the songs.
Niel is the god, drummer and lyricist extraordinaire.
Alex is the SUPERGLUE that holds it all together and makes it sound
like RUSH. Imagine any RUSH song without the guitar, even the
     keyboardy songs like "Mission"...

Nice to be back to TNMS after an 18-month layover...

I'm happy to see Rush fans are still enthusiastic about their band after all the
negative hype that I've heard regarding Counterparts. Now that the album is no
longer new and has some time to 'ferment', where does everyone rank Counterparts
in relation to the rest of the Rush studio albums?

Any word on a new album??

Easy! It's a 3 LP (how many CD?) set of the first three Rush albums. It's
been out a while, as I bought the LP version in late 1984. Is there a CD
version?

I think they released it sometime between AFTK and Hemispheres, but I'm
SURE someone will correct me if I'm wrong... ;)

I've been hearing some rumours concerning Rush and Lawrence Gowan
lately... I know Alex has played on some of his previous albums, but
lately I've been hearing that Alex is also going to do his next album, and
that it just so happened that Geddy ended up on bass and perhaps even
Neil on drums...

Is this just a fantasy from the minds of Gowan fans, or is there some
merit to this rumor?

Would it be like Max Webster: Featuring Kim Mitchell?? Gowan: Featuring Rush?

Hello,
This is my first post to NMS, so let me introduce myself. I'm Kenny and am over
( I say OVER 'cos most of you are in the states- should that have a capital
S ?!!) in Scotland....thats the good bit stuck on above England in case that
means nothing. :-p
( I'll no doubt get flamed for that one !!)
Any way I seen the post by <Ty>about the title Archives. I take it you mean
the triple album " Archives" which included the albums, Rush, Fly By Night and
Caress of Steel. If you mean something else like a video title or something
then pardon me for being a prat.
The only reason I am answering is that when you said that it was released last
year it struck me how long ago I bought my copy. God it fair makes you feel
old!! I think I got my copy about 1979 ish while I was still at school, and
the copy I've got is getting pretty doggy . I remember using the cover to
trace the Pentogram symbol onto my combat jacket and college books !! Does
this ring a bell with anyone ??
Anyway I think I did notice a re release of the Archives Trilogy in the record
shop not that long ago...it had a different cover so maybe that is what you
seen.

Hi, this is my first post, but I've been reading the NMS for a few months
now. I was wondering if anyone knew what happened to Rushinfo, the
Windows help based program including the faq, lyrics, and tour dates. I
got it from syrinx about two or three months ago, but never backed it up,
and lost it during a crash. I just checked syrinx, but can't seem to
find it anymore. If someone knows what directory it's in, or somewhere
else I can get it, it'd be appreciated.

[ It has been accidentally deleted from syrinx, if the original uploader
would be so kind as to re-put it there, I'll move it to a more permanent
     place on syrinx. : rush-mgr ]

Also, does anyone know where I could get a copy Visions? I remember
reading where in an old issue, but I forget which.

If no one minds, I'd also like some suggestions as to which album to get
next. All I have left to get is CoS, ATWAS, HYF, Presto, and ESL.

Thanks,

Ross

Oh, one last thing. Does anybody know where I could get the videos that
have gone out of print, like the GUP tour video or Through the Camera's
Eye? The local stores have ASOH and Chronicles, but they all say they
can't get the others anymore.
Sorry to take up so much space with such trivial issues.

I agree that the overall style of Rush is one that relies on the "total
group effort." Just because Alex doesn't play 10 million notes in each
measure doesn't mean that he is incompetent as a musician. The great
Baritone Saxophonist GERRY MULLIGAN is one the *most respected* jazz
musicians of all time; his style is representative of playing as *FEW* notes
as possible, thus making each note sort of super concentrated in meaning and
impact.
I think that we all get sort of caught up in who can play the most notes and
who can play the fasted licks. Anyhow, this is just my honest opinion!!

Re: Alex Lifeson-GUITAR GOD!

Hello, I'm responding to a few questions that were towards the end of
the last NMS. Excuse my lack of precision, please, this is one of my
virgin posts! About 10-15 minute songs: I read somewhere that Neil just
doesn't need to write long songs anymore to get an idea across, so there
is no need for long songs (DAMN!!). Also, he said in an interview that
it's also just the way they are progressing. In other words, the way they
are progressing has not been in a long, 20 minute direction (much to
my dismay).

About Jacob's Ladder- I've thought about this myself for a brief moment
when I came upon the conclusion that when Ged says "done" on ESL, he
means produced. Like, "Yeah, I did that song for that band."
There you go, hope I could help . . .

Hi All,
A quick response re jmace@csd.uwm.edu (Ty) about RUSH:Archives.

I have a triple vinyl (age showing here) release bought in Australia in
about 1980. It contains Rush FBN and COS, all packaged in a grey album
cover with the classic Rush symbol on the front. I think it was released
by Mercury but I can't be sure.

Don't know if it's the right Archives, but it exists....and it's MINE!!

Have a Good Day
Paul Avery
For wot it's worth, Power Windows is my favourite RUSH album

Don't know, but please don't let the man sing! He should play guitar and
not be a lead singer. I think his voice did not help Triumph.

Subject: NMS 20th Anniv. Gift to Rush

Greetings, Ladies and Gents!

Welp, for all intents and purposes, the NMS 20th Anniversary Gift Project
is finished! Yay! It is (for the most part) in the hands of Rush, now.

I will recount my none-too-exciting trip to Anthem Records later, for
those who may be interested in such things. But for now, great
acknowledgements are in order to those who gave their enormous time and
effort for this monumental task:

* Those on the Gift Committee, past and present (in no particular order) --

Betsey Fike, Art Hung, Gregg Jaeger, Pete Jourdan, Alex Mustard,
John Santore, Dave Huart, Cheryl Renshaw, Jeremy Strzynski, Cody Stumpo,
Julie Oneida, Stephen McInerny, Brad West, Kristian Strickland, Robyn King,
Erin Hicks, Chris Mackie, Joel Fenton, Shawna Burns, and Sandy Donovan.

Thank you, folks, one and all. Some of you had to leave and others
stayed on for the duration. You know the effort you put in - my ETERNAL
THANKS to you all, a hearty hand-shake and a case of beer. Even through
the arguments, the troughs in activity, and the infernal stress, you
guys pulled through and we managed to get it done. May you find 'Xanadu'
and Drink the Milk of Paradise...

* Meg Jahnke -- for setting up the book@tnms.com address, sending me its
contents, placing the gift announcements on the gopher site, the Web,
and specially marked boxes of...I mean, uh Special Issues of the NMS,
and generally helping us with questions, etc. THANK YOU. You'll be
gettin' a beer or two from me, as well. :-)

* Chris Haaker and George Rogic -- for volunteering their time and
effort to help with the book publishing.

* Last, but most certainly never least -- all of YOU who contributed your
well- and hard- earned savings to this project, and those who sent in
stories, anecdotes, and heartfelt words of thanks for the NMS Book.
   Whether your contribution had been $0.50 or $100, a pin or 15 shirts;
a novel or a single sentence -- every contribution was important.
Every single one. Without you, this project would not have worked.
You made a difference in someone's life and paid tribute to Rush in
one fell swoop. (no pun intended -------------^) You are an incredible
bunch of people. My personal and deeply felt GRATITUDE to you all.
May your Rush CD's never scratch, and may your dog never eat the CD
   booklet.... :-)

* And, of course, thanks to Kim Garner and her assistant, Trish, for
talking to the band on our behalf, and helping us mold this project.

This project has been two years in the making. Maybe we'll do this again,
maybe not. But it was all worth it. From all those dozen ideas that
were first brought out to the final finished project -- it has been a
long road. My DEEPEST and SINCEREST *THANK YOU'S* go out to all of you
who helped make it possible -- and my SINCEREST APOLOGIES for anyone I
may have left out. May all your Rush concerts be seen from front row.
WE DID IT, GANG! :-) Rush on...

Ho-hoo!

Subject: Trip to Anthem Records

Hello All!

Welp, the NMS 20th Anniversary Gift to Rush is now in the hands of the
band! I headed up to Toronto for about a week for a nice fun-filled
vacation, and since I was there, I'd hand over some of the gift stuff
to Anthem Records. And so, one fine day, with goods in hand and address
memorized, I headed out for my destination.

Without, of course, bothering to ask *where* they were located...

I reach the fabled Carlton St., home of Anthem, and prepare to search for
"189". To my horror, I look at the first address -- "2". :-| sigh...
Walk walk walk. Walk walk. Screw this, take a streetcar...
After some more infernal walking (I had deduced, by the end of my trip,
that I traversed at least half of TO on foot...), I found Anthem Records!

Neither office tower nor skyscraper were they in, but the cutest little
Victorian house. Classy looking, white, and rather unpretentious, with
only the "189" above the door to mark location. I open the outer door
and enter. On one side, scotch-taped to the wall is a little strip of
paper which reads, "Anthem/SRO Productions". ?? I almost cracked up.
I half-expected a cardboard cut-out of Alex to be greeting visitors... :)
I pressed a buzzer for the office staff to open the door.

Trisha, Kim Garner's assistant, was there to greet me (caught them right
at lunch hour, too.) Kim, unfortunately, was out, so I never had a
chance to meet her. But the office is very nice, small, but classy.
Very Rush! :) There's a reception area (couches, chairs, coffee table)
on one side, and a huge U-shaped desk on the other. And boy! are those
walls *lined* with gold and platinum albums!! I remember someone had
mentioned that way back when. There was a wall behind the desk, obscuring
the rest of the office, so that's all I saw. Nice place.

At any rate, I handed over everything to Trisha, she thanked me/us for
doing something like this. She promised to give everything over to Kim...
and I left! Pretty uneventful. I was really bummed Kim wasn't there,
as I'd wanted to ask her about Alex's new album and Neil's "Burning for
Buddy, Vols. II AND III" (which he is *supposed* to release, the rat).
sigh...but alas.

So that was the exciting trip to Anthem Records. :-) As Cheryl mentioned
before, I think, the checks have been sent out to the hospices. I still
need to get a hold of some of you regarding this gift, so it's not TOTALLY
finished yet. But the gist of it has been completed and is in the hands
of the band! Yay! Good job, folks!

Right! I've rattled on long enough...

Ho-hoo!

Subject: Long time, no post

Hi all...
I have borrowed my friend's Internet login to check up on how TNMS is
doing. I have not had an address since TNMS was in the 400's, so I have
undoubtedly missed a lot. I have only read the most recent Digest and already
have a couple of things to say.
        1) It's been too long since I have been able to keep up with my
favorite band via e-mail. God, I love technology.
        2) To the person who suggested bands for the Rush tribute...
King's X is an amazing band and Ty, Doug, and Jerry are three of the most
down-to-earth people I have met. I can only imagine how hard it must be
to live in teh Limelight and still be able to jsut hang out with some completee
strangers and enjoy a good conversation. To those of you who are not familiar
with King's X, I can only give a resounding recommendation.
Also, Ozric Tentacles was mantioned, for La Villa Strangiato. Another entirely
under-rated ensmble. I was turned on to Ozric about two years ago by a friend
and have fallen totally in love with their musicianship. However, I do not
no much about them. If anyone can give me some details, I would be very
grateful. For those of you who have not heard them, pick up any one of their
albums ("Strangitude" is my favorite) for an entirely unusual and enjoyable
aural experience.
        3) The strange barking and growling noises during By-Tor & The Snow
Dog were created by Geddy and some serious distorted effects. I can only
guess that the live reproduction was done with a tape (or possibly a
sampler, if any were available when they performed this song live).

If any major events have occurred with Rush over the past couple of
years (excepting Counterparts and the subsequent tour, both of which I am
quite familiar with) please let me know at 'steeno@winternet.com'. While
this is not my own account, the owner will be just as intereseted as I am.
It's good to be able to post again (if not subscribe) and I am looking
forward to talking to y'all soon.

Matt

P.S. Please excuse the typo's...No backspace or delete key functioning here.
I can't BELIEVE I used 'no' instead of 'know' up there. God, I feel dumb.

Subject: No Rush Content

You guys have been slagging Echolyn quite a bit, and to tell you the truth
I'd never even heard of them until a subscribed to TNMS, but i recently
acquired their album " As the World" and i have to give it Two Thumbs Up. At
times it reminds me of Eloy, but for the most part it sounds like Gentle
Giant without the acoustic instruments (throw in a little "good" Kansas and
thats The album). They have harmonies that put wanker bands such as Extreme
to shame. I've only had the CD about 24 hours, and i haven't had time to
examine the lyrical content, but the music they play is pretty damn good. Oh
yes, BTW, Alex Lifeson is the only rock guitarist that matters. He not only
has technical ability, but his choices of notes are outstanding. No other
guitarist has given me shivers as much as this guy . LONG LIVE ALEX!!! I even
named my daughter after him. (Yes I'm sick). Before I go, here are some
mistaken Rush Lyrics, both from The Analog Kid:

1."The boy lies in the grass with one blade stuck between his teeth"

The boy lies in the grass with one leg stuck between his teeth.
2."His mother starts to call him as a hawk goes soaring by"

His mother starts to call him as a hog goes soaring by. (Pink floyd must have
been on tour) Later Y'all
 Lewis
