I am very new to this forum (only 1 month old) and I know this is a RUSH
forum, but I am surprised there isn't much discussion on groups that have
acknowledged their style has roots with RUSH.
PRIMUS is one of the most innovative, and funny, bands which gets most of
its airplay on alternative radio stations. These stations that avoid RUSH
like the plague may not know that PRIMUS is one of RUSH's biggest fans.
Anyway Les Claypool is one of the best Bass players in existence, even Geddy
should be impressed. His use of the Bass for melody is both unique and a
pleasure to listen to. In general their songs kick ass.

If so, what number is he? And are there any Prisoner references in any of the

Subject: "Rushy" Yes album
Hello fellow Rush fans!
Ok, I am looking for something to listen to while
I wait impatiently for a new Rush album. Which Yes albums
are "Rushy"? I bought 90125 because someone told me it
was VERY similar to Power Windows (my FAVORITE Rush album).
Now, you can't say I didn't like 90125, but it's just not
what I expected. I also have Fragile, and it too does not
interest me much. I've listened to both albums many times.
Maybe Yes is not my kind of stuff. But I also said this
about Rush before I was a fan, and now look at me :)
Anyways, can someone suggest for me a good Yes album I would
like. Maybe I haven't been listening to the right Yes stuff.
BTW, I just want to say that ELP's Brain Salad Surgery is GOOD!
very "Rushy" I think :)

Yes. Thats a good price. I have seen it for as low as 80 bucks however.
Prices Vary big time. It just depends if you are a cheap bastard (like me!),
and are willing to wait for a good price.

Where do you shop!!?!??? The pic disc goes for about $125.00. Their are 3
versions of the normal LP. they are from New Zealand, W.Germany, and Holland.
Holland is the most comon. I got mine for 15 bucks! The West German is the
most rare of the regular vinyl. Expect to pay 20 or 30 bucks for it in a
reasonable record shop.
As for the Tape. It is indeed rarer than the LP if you can believe it. I have
only seen 2 versions of it. From Holland, and New Zealand. Expect to pay
about $20.00 for the Holland copy, and about $30.00 or $40.00 for the New
Zealand issue.

Just Where DO you shop!!!!??? I am not flaming. Just amazed at the various
value's. This is not as rare as you think. the Everything.... LP is worth 3
times this. You can pick up this for about $75.00 from a long list of
supliers. Its value is going up. But I have seen it for cheap prices. The
highest and most average being 75.
NOW, To find a copy of this on Cassette is another feat! I only know of 1
person that even has it, let alone, to find a copy for sale!!!!!!!!!
If anyone is interested in trading any vinyl like the above mentioned,
contact me, I have an extensive collection, and a few doubles laying around
the house.

Subject: Circumstances
Just a thought or revelation as I was driving home from work the other
day while listening to Hemispheres. Seems to me that the Circumstances
song is about Neil's time spent in England looking for work before he
joined Rush...Particularly the line "a boy alone so far from home,
Endless roof tops from my window" sounds like what he'd see from London...
Also speaking of rare stuff...I have an old Caress of Steel tape with the
songs in the incorrect order Diacts and Naparts is listed on side one and
I think I'm Going Bald is listed as part of the Fountain of
Lamneth...Anybody else have this? Is it worth anything except the paper
its typed on?
Just a reminder from the Album cover of RUSH...for best results play at
maxium volume...I found this particularly helps when listening to the
latest cd's...

Ok, I wasn't going to respond to this because I don't think VH1 is worth
the effort, but today (7/8/95) is my 32 birthday and I'm REALLY in a
cranky mood! ("Sometimes I crawl outta bed and I feel like a son of a
BITCH...")
Yeah, I watched bits and pieces of the VH1 EXTRAVAGANZA, but it wasn't
to catch a good video or any RUSH for God's sake. I tuned in to see
videos from forgotten pop bands from the 80s, whose songs were on the
lips of everyone who was musically dead who probably wouldn't buy the
album NOW from a cut-out bin for fifty cents. These are the same people
who put down RUSH, but where is RUSH today. It amazes me how success is
measured. Count how many top-ten hits bands like RUSH of Pink Floyd or
BOC have had.....Ooooh, not very popular. Now start selling tickets for
big arena showws of these bands and the big money rolls in.
But anyway, back to the VH1 thang. I think there is a big gap in our
music video channels. Mtv sucks because they play rap every other song
and crap when they aren't. VH1 is supposed to be the "Adults" station.
Because in their eyes "Adults" do nothing but sit aroun with each other
while their kids run around reffering to their kids as "that one", while
listening to some mindless dreck on the radio that won't cause
conversation, just keep lulling them into old age. I am an adult, but i
refuse to act like them!
SO I'll shut the hell up. Thanks for letting me ramble on, I am usually
a happy go lucky slob but it is early in the morning and I couldn't
sleep because I felt 32 creeping up on me in the night, and when the
grey dawn light broke through this morning, flies were circling my head
like buzzards waiting to dine.
And If I wasn't so damn bleary-eyed, this might have made more sense.

This question has probably already been answered, but I'm new to NMS and I
was hoping to find out how the band re-creates(or recreated) By-Tor. If you
listen to ATWIAS, they play the Bass & Guitar parts and ALSO play the
"Fighting" sound effects, which I always considered guitar & Bass distortion.
I hope that wasn't on tape!
Also, I've always been a fan of Rush's medleys of songs when they play
live....do you have a list of medleys that they have preformed live.
thank you very kindly,(Hey where's that from!)

Hey, I go to college at UCSD (home for the summer now though) and a couple
of friends and I are trying to start up a band down there. We have bass
(me), guitar and we're still negotiating with a singer/guitarist. We need
drums and keys, however. If anyone's in the San Diego area during the
school year and is interested, drop me a line. Influences: Rush (but I
suppose that's obvious), Dream Theatre, Yes, Megadeth, Floyd and perhaps a
little Primus and Blues Traveller (occasionally). We'd be doing mostly
original stuff, but we'd also be taking a crack at a few Rush songs and
whatever else sounds cool to everyone. Thanks,

Rick was absolutely correct about his IMAX assessment. I checked it out

described to me the size of the film and the projector that is used. Muy
big! It was just a thought but even on a movie screen I still feel that
a movie short would be fantastic. It would sure beat those annoying

Right, *Neil's* trip to China, not *Chinese* philosophy. "Tai Shan"
is a humanistic tune more than anything, that is it is philosophically
late Western*. Give me an actual analysis showing the "Eastern
philosophy" here -- strikes me more like Thoreau+Darwin.

"Territories" certainly does express any particular "eastern"
philosophy, except perhaps for the equally Western "live and let

I've been reading the NMS for a month now and its great and has really
elevated my interest in RUSH again. I became a lifetime RUSH fan my
junior year in high school (1982-83) after I listened to the lyrics of
Subdivisions while I was hanging out in a video game center trying to
conform and be cool so I wouldn't be cast out. Its' nice to know that
there are others that like the post MP albums as much as I do.
During the CP tour in L.A., I heard the very end of a story on the
radio about an award related to fund raising that RUSH received. RUSH
was real low key (no press) about it (surprise, surprise!) and that is
the last I heard about it. Does anyone know what the award was or what
RUSH was raising funds for?
My highschool in southern CA. had about 5 hardcore RUSH fans. I still
run in to them once in a while at concerts. When I was standing in line
to buy my CP concert tickets, I was surprised to see highschool kids
also standing in line. It was great to see that some kids do have good
taste in music and that RUSH is still gaining new fans.
BTW I'm not surprised anymore when I hear their music played in the
background during newsshows, sportshows etc. One time I was forced to
listen to Rush Limbaugh and this guy calls up to talk to RL and the guy
tried to convince RL to listen to RUSH. Can you believe that? There are
some hardcore fans out there.
DCaldw@aol.com
>Let me start by saying that I did not write this. I am just passing it on. Do

Unfortunately, this is nothing new. I have never seen a good review of
RUSH. In fact I got so mad one time I wrote a nasty letter to Rolling
Stone. RTB received the only decent review of a RUSH album that I ever
saw. If RUSH is so bad, why have they been around for 20+ years? Why
does the NMS exist? Why do they sell out concert after concert? I guess
RUSH fans don't know anything about music. No, I'm not flaming you but
that writer should be flamed.
Sorry, if I rambled but this is my first post and I think my brain just

Subject: CTTH lyrics
Tony Dormio asks why Neil chose to start CTTH with "and". I have
always assumed that he was simply continuing the lyrics from "AFTK"
which end with "closer to the heart...". Those two songs seem to be
close cousins after all - with very similar lyrical themes. My guess
is that had the album been made in the CD era, the two songs would
have been back-to-back. Equalizing the two sides of the LP probably
prevented it in the first place. If I also recall correctly, the
original title of AFTK (the album) was to be "Closer to the Heart"
since the phrase appears in both of the aforementioned songs.
On another issue... several people have mentioned that they love
Counterparts but skip "The Speed of Love." Now I am an old fart after
all, and I will admit it is not their best effort musically, but the
lyrics are so GOOD and dead on about the way love starts, changes, and
grows. I think it is as good as Neil has ever done (with the possible
exceptions of The Pass and Time Stand Still) in evoking and capturing
deep emotions. Ah but how many young whippersnappers really understand
love? In ten years you'll all love that song :).

Anyway, I know many people write what they think is the best song or

Subject: What if Rush just went "off"?
This is my first post ever......I discovered the NMS about 2 months ago
and think it is great that people like you all are doing something like
this. Upon discovering the NMS I was estatic, and I kid you not, that I
spent over 24 hrs straight reading all kinds of stuff and I have been
reading ever since......and now I think it is time I share something that
has been in my head regarding Rush for a while.
Upon reading many, many peoples' posts, I often came across many
in which debate over lyrical content and just exactly what many of
Peart's songs are saying. What the story is about, the message, the
idea, etc......like the song "The Trees" for example: was it meant to be
taken as some bizarre illusion in which we are to imagine what it would
be like to be a maple tree, which is put down by a larger oak tree? Or is
it a symbollic song, one that takes a look at a society in which the
common man, perhaps the lower-middle class revolts against the ruling
upper class? This could esily be seen either way or in many ways by
different people, so debate results. I guess it is ok. I mean I too find
it quite intresting to attempt to get into Neil Peart's mind......and
rather fun too.
Taking away nothing from Neil Peart's ability to write lyrics,
because I think his style and literism is one to be most
respected.....(ok, now I get to the point at hand) ---has anybody ever
imagined what a Rush album would be like if it were all instrumentals?
Just think of the possibilities!! .....Damn I get goose bumps just
thinking about it! Perhaps I sould briefly explain where I am coming from.
I am a 25 yr. old male and I have been listening to Rush since I
was like 12.....13 yrs or so. I first started to hear them cuz of
Neil...I play drums also, although once a yr now since college and no
time to set up with friends. I tried too immulate Neil of course, but as
I listened more and more....I fell in love with Rush's music. I mean, I
heard them over and over again and NEVER got tired of them, and the music
really made me feel good. Their music, I can say really put me "in a
state of grace". I don't think I will ever tire of their music, as it is
truly timeless, at least in my eyes.
I also read an article in which geddy points out that the reason
they are in the business is their love of "music". And in the CP dayview
he also says something about how when they do instrumentals it so much
fun for the, because they simply are at play with their instruments. I
call this Rush "going off". And I absoulutely love when they do indeed
"go off". It would really be an awsome record I think. For one, they
could really concentrate on the music so much more, not having to worry
about lyrics fitting in and making a song. In this case I think they
would make a 'piece'. And no, I am not talking about making just 'yyz'
and 'leave that thing alone' type music either. They could just "go off"
and explore. I believe these guys really make their instruments talk, and
without the use of lyrics they express emotion. One of my most often
played cd's is 'exit' due to songs which I think are vintage Rush, ones I
would take to my grave:
'beneath..','jacob's..'broon's','trees','xanadu','la villa'. .. played in
that order!
ahhh.....'the magic music makes your morning mood' -- doesn't it?
With such an album there would be no debates on lyrics, just
"music" to be enjoyed over and over again and the individual could just
sit back and enjoy. Plus, Neil, Alex and Geddy could just have alot of
fun too! It feels really cool to see that they are having fun on stage. I
dunno that's just me. Perhaps it gives me the sense that they will
continue to this for a while longer, which is a comforting thought.
I don't know how many people's mind this idea has crossed. I
guess its just that I am the kind of fan that would be truly content if
their live show consisted of them jamming out with a blanket in the
backgound. I mean, I just love to watch this guys "go off". And the idea
of them doing it for 60 minutes straight really excites me, and leaves me
wondering of the possibilities.........
.............can you imagine?

ASQM-SWP-G (Galaxy) Writes:
that keeps them going and it keeps the shows fresh. just like in ASOH,
at the end of Overture, Alex messed with Geddy's timing. Come on, does
anyone want to know what Alex was thinking then? it's pretty obvious,
he wanted to screw with his buddy. there's also a moment in either
ASOH.
I Think if you check again, Alex breaks a string at the end of Tom
Sawyer. He has a different guitar when they play 2112. After the
pause that Geddy waits for, Alex then has the guitar back that he used
on Tom Sawyer. I could be wrong, but it looks to be a technical
problem not a joke.

Well, in AFTK the song, we get a taste of things to come with the line,
"can't we find the minds to lead us closer to the heart..." Perhaps our
dear Mr.Peart was simply on a roll, and decided to continue his thread
into an entirely separate song?

Subject: Rush Bootlegs $$$
Fellow Rush-a-holics:
In TNMS #1110, JMRTNTTO3@aol.com gave some info on some Rush bootlegs.
He said that Rush: Anthology was worth $300-$500. WOW!! Was that the album
or CD? I have a copy of the album that I picked up at a record show in San
Antonio for $12. I also have an album called "Xanadu" that is from live show
in St. Louis in 1981 and a album (promo?) that is called "Temples of the
Syrinx" (yes, the extraneous "the" is really on the cover) that has 2112,
Overture, Temples of Syrinx, Natural Science, In the Mood, and three or four
more songs. My question is, does anyone know what these are worth? I would
never part with them in a million years, but it would be interesting to know
how much they have increased in value over time. I think I paid $18 for
Xanadu and $4 for Temples of the Syrinx.

As far as I remember, Geddy used an ppg wave digital synth on p/g, along
with the previous stuff he was using. The DX7 was still pretty new when
p/g came out (1983 for the DX7), so he may not have even had one at that
time. The ppg used a different technique from FM to produce sounds, some
sort of layered samples I think, but it did have similar sound qualities
as the DX7.

Subject: Counterparts live
Hello fellow RUSH fans,
I just acquired a b**tleg of the Counterparts show in Louisiana. Anybody
from around those parts who might have seen the show? I'm just
curious as to what is going on during several parts of the show. There
are a couple of places where the crowd is going nuts. It's obvious that
the boys must be "cutting up" on stage or something. The music is played
in pretty much the standard format, but the crowd is just absolutely
freaking out at a few points. Just curious.
Also, Geddy comments about it being like the 2nd night of the tour and tells
the audience that they might hear some surprising things, hopefully all
good things. Then Big Al rambles a bit while the crowd cheers. Alex
then asks Neil if he'd like to say anything instead of just"sitting back
there smiling all night long!" At this point the crowd is going totally
nuts.
Highlights of the recording: Jam at the end of "Mystic Rhythms", Killer
version
of "Limelight", cool jam at the end of "Closer to the Heart", "LTTA" rocks
and of course "Hemispheres" and the "Cygnus" teaser.
Also, got a b**tleg video of the Reno, Nevada Counterparts shows (awesome)
and a RTB b**tleg video of one of the NY shows (even awesomer).

Waddup!
While waiting for Alex's solo album I figured I'd take the advice of
some NMSers and bought Ozric Tentacles 'Arborescence'. Uhhh...I couldn't make
it through a complete tune! I can see the Rush similarity--the guitarist sounds
like a bad Alex imitation. I love instrumental music as long as it has some
sort of direction (which this stuff DOESN'T). Needless to say, after scanning
the whole cd the disc mysteriously flew out of my car window and I happily
returned to my regularly scheduled Rush programming! Any other suggestions? (and
don't say Echolyn! blech!)

Subject: "The Big Money"
I've been looking at the recent posts regarding the letters N.S.F. in the
video "The Big Money", and I thought that I would/could offer what I felt
was meant there. When I first saw the video I thought the letters stood for
the National Security Fund. I reasoned this to be a logical assumption due
to the nature of the song and the amount of funds thrown into this body
every year by the government of the United States. I don't know how much
money Canada spends on nation security, buty since the States are just a
stones throw away I figured Mr. Peart might have an insight as to the
over-spending going on in the U.S. and be writing about that.
Now that I have seen the Non-Sufficient Funds, however, I think that this
might also be a logical deduction.
Thank You,
Josh Cross
