Subject: Christian RUSH freaks

Hey now...hello fellow Rush freaks!

A question has been on my mind. Are there any Rush freaks/fans on this list
who are Born-Again Christians? A very close friend of mine named Jim is a
BAC and listens to Christian-type stuff. I can't for the life of me get him
into Rush...he's heard what little Rush is usually played on the radio and I
think he's formed his opinons. The thing that BUGS me is that he's into
computers, space ship stuff, Star Trek, comic books and literature, etc (the
stuff Rush is made of!!!). I've successfully converted my wife, my little
brother who's 16, my mom (!!!), and countless friends (applause, applause)
but Jim won't budge!

I think my only chance is to compile a list of select Rush songs and sit Jim
down and force him to listen via my Sony 175 watt Dolby Pro Logic Surround
Sound system while reading along with the lyrics. I can't miss!! (can I?)...

I think once he hears--really HEARS the music like I do, he'll be a fan, or
at least he'll come to respect my convictions of the Boyz. I know I probably
sound like a broken record to him because with me it's alway Rush-this and
Rush-that (not so bad!). But I want him to feel the experience---when I
listen, it's like being in the presence of greatness...a privilege, if you
will. A feeling comes over you, a blanket of awe, and you listen...and you
know. I guess it's a soulmate kind of thang. I liken it to many BAC's stories
of being "saved".

Anyway, I figure the mini concert would have songs like Manhattan Project,
Entre Nous, Time Stand Still, etc. Nothing too heavy (ala Stick It Out,
YYZ--wouldn't want to scare him off!).

Am I ranting, I hope so. You know, my rantings get raves! Well, any BAC Rush
fans out there?...or anyone have ideas for converting my friend? E-mail me!

Thanx in advance.

Well, for those of you who can get onto the web and/or gopher, there is a site
there for you to download transcripts to old tour books. These mention the
equipment used for each member (except Alex who can Never give a straight
forward answer) as well as Neil's overview of what happened during the
recording of the album. Some of them are quite funny, and they should answer
all the questions about synthesizers and nicnames and possivble influences for
lyrics that have been running rampant lately. Anyway, the site is under the
web, choose EINet galaxy, choose leisure, choose music, and go down to the
bottom of the list and you will find "the ultimate gopher site for RUSH fans".
Here they have transcriptions to magazine interviews with the guys, and loads
of other stuff. So, if you can get there, check it out.

BTW, can the two who are argueing over the Eastern influences cut it out?
Neil said in one of the interviews I read from that gopher site that each
person should get their own interpretation out of his lyrics. It makes no
matter where they came from of why, what's important is what YOU get out of
them for YOUR own enjoyment, not what you think SOMEONE ELSE ntended. RUSH
music is for those who are looking to expand their own horizons, not just be
spoonfed what they think someone else wants them to hear. (Just my opinion!)

Subject: thoughts

Greetings all,

I am just sitting here listening to Bravado off of the "Atmospheric"
boot....great CD! Anyway, I was just thinking lately about how Neil's
philosophy and the music the band plays has influenced my life. I start
to examine my own opinions, thoughts, philosophies, and recognize stuff
straight out off a Rush song. It's weird how complete strangers can
influence the world to such an extent. I can hear these people in
Amsterdam singing along with Geddy.....and I feel weird. I mean someone
across the ocean from me loves and appreciates their work as much as I
do. The globalness (is that a word?) of it just floors me. These men
that I have never met, that I have never communicated with, can reach me
in ways that few others can. It's kind of cool when you sit back and
think about it...but it's kind of frightening as well. I mean, we know
nothing about them, and yet they are close friends. For through their
music, and the lyrics, a bond is developed, and it influences thoughts,
feelings, perceptions, etc. Weird.

I think that the band is not more mainstream because they challenge
the listener. Not only is the music extremely complex and satisfying,
but the lyrics are challenging, probing, and intelligent. Most people
don't like to struggle with ideas and concepts in music, and in film
because it is perceived as entertainment, and entertainment only. Rush
and their music challenges me, enlightens me, entertains me, etc. I
think that is why there are not as many of us out there, as say Nirvana
fans. To me, its much more difficult to listen to Kurt screaming into a
microphone about God knows what, with guitars wailing at full volume in
the background...then it is to listen to intelligent songwriting like
Rush. No flames please....it's just an opinion.

Anyway, sorry for the long post.....I'm tired, and this CD is making
me wax prolific. Take it easy all.....

Since rush might be sued by atlantic for not making an album by a certain
time. They should have a video compliation of videos that were not
released on other video compliations like: ROLL THE BONES, and NOBODY's
HERO. I especialy would like to see SUPERCONDUCTOR and some others. Rush
fans especialy me would gladly pay $30 for a 2 hour and a half 30 video
tape. It would beat Pink Floyd. I encourage people to e-mail and write to
atlantic to tell them to tell Rush to release those videos.

Subject: Rush and Telescopes

Hi everyone!

After reading the last NMS about the "link" between astrophysics and Rush,
I'd like to describe a few "experiments" I've conducted during some
observing nights...

I'm a professional astronomer, a postdoc fellow in Tucson (Az) but
I've been an amateur astronomer since I was 12. Before I went to
graduate school (in Quebec City), I was observing in a small town
near the University where I got my bachelor's degree. The telescope was
located in a small dome, about 15 feet in diameter. I was usually working
with a friend of mine, also a Rush fan, who had a big and powerful
portable radio. While observing, we were always listening to Rush and we
discovered something really amusing. If we turned up the volume inside
the dome and then walked across the room, we could hear very weird
reflections of the music inside the dome. During the day, we decided to
experiment a bit more with this "phenomenon" and just for fun we cranked
up the sound real loud. For this, we played "Countdown", just to hear
the shuttle roaring when taking off... However, we then realized that
the dome had in fact became a very large resonance chamber and we went
outside. We could hear the music REAL far away from the observatory! We
were then all set for the real thing ...

A few months later, we started to use one of the biggest professional
telescopes in Canada to obtain our data. The dome is about 40 feet in
diameter. The place was used for filming a very interesting video by
Triumph about 6 or 7 years ago (I think the title of the song is "Anybody
out there? or something like that). One night, I was observing and talking
to the night assistant and I discovered that he was also a big Rush fan!!
Hmmm.... So, after telling him the above story, he was quite interested
in trying it too! Inside the dome, we had speakers connected to the
CD player in the control room and, of course, I had my Rush CDs with me!!
Thus, we used a 40 feet metallic dome as an enormous resonance chamber,
playing Rush songs inside so loud that we couldn't talk to each other
(it's a good way to help to stay awake during the night too...). The
sound outside was just AMAZING!!! The observatory is located on the top of
a small mountain in complete isolation but I'm sure we could hear
the musique really far away from the top!! We probably scared all the
little rabbits running around the dome to death during
that night...

Since then, I have observed in much larger domes but I've never tried
this experiment in them. Well, not yet ... My dream is to be able to play
my drumkit in one of those... So, if one day, you're close to an
observatory, listen carefully, maybe you'll be up for a free concert!!

   Pierre

Subject: geddy's vocals

Somebody mentioned the dubious quality of Geddy's voice in concert, and I,
like you, have never noticed it in an actual concert setting. I have noticed
it on several ROIO's that I have, though. It seems to me to only happen at
the beginning of the shows. Maybe he doesn't warm up properly before the
concert and it takes him a couple of songs to get going. Another theory is
that it takes a while to get the monitor mix correct, so he has a hard time
hearing himself. I know nothing about concert sound so this is pure
speculation. Anyway, Rush is Rush, and a couple of vocal errors can't change
the beauty of their music. On a not entirely unrelated note, I was looking at
the unofficial concert listings and i saw that there are a few pre Rush lp
concerts. Is there anyone out there with a copy of any of these. I would also
like a recording of their first single. Drop me a line and I'll send you a
trade list. As far as Alex Lifeson's guitar playing, I think he is a very
accomplished guitarist. The reason that he gets slagged of so much is that a
lot of times he is contributing in an atmospheric fashion as opposed to being
a traditional "lead" guitarist. A perfect example of Alex's atmosphere is the
portion of his solo on "the Weapon" before he gets going. I love the washes
of sound he puts out. This is one of my favorite solo's by him. Another
guitarist that ended up taking this atmospheric approach is Andy Summers.
Check out his stuff on the later Police stuff. Take it easy.....I'm outta
here.

Subject: Starman

I have a question about one of Rush's most identifiable
symbols: the Starman.
It is obvious that the first appearance of the
Starman was in the jacket of 2112, representing our hero's
struggle symbolically in awe of The Red Star of the Solar
Federation led by the Priests of Syrinx, his hands held
out in terror and resistance and left with nothing but his
human form to protect him, one man against a religion.
How did this symbol suddenly go from being the icon
of a single album to representing an entire band? Was it
because people identified with it or simply because
they liked it? Or otherwise? I have a Starman T-shirt
reissue from 1990 and people always ask me if I'm a Satanist
or something. I proceed to laugh hysterically in their
faces, thinking, if only they knew the music and the three
men behind it, they would know one of the most powerful
symbols in the world for what it truly is. (Sob story, I
know...)
Also, it seems to me that the "Lil' naked man" who
is showing off his hemispheres on the album Hemispheres
is also related to 2112. After all,
		"The cities were abandoned
		 And the forests echoed song"
is the same event that took place in Rand's Anthem when
Equality 7-2521 removed himself and his new love from
society and wandered through the forest searching for their
own identities.
I, myself, know I will always hold the Red Starman
"proudly high in hand." What do you think?
	Thanks for your time...

Subject: Syncophants, Screen Savers and High School

Good day! Is it just me, or are there Rush fans who follow Neil's lyrics like
the Talmud? Personally, I enjoy making a critical analysis of the lyrics, I
often agree with the philosophy, but I don't see Neil as my philosophical
savior. I'm not trying to insult anyone, because as we know, to each his own.
However, to those who say things like, "Man, Neil is so cool, he's brilliant,
he dialed in!!" are you agreeing with him just to agree, or do you really
agree? Again, no insults intended, I'm just wondering.

In issue #1112, RRUsh@clc.cc.il.us asked if there were any Rush screen savers.
My screen saver currently is a picture of Eric Lindros, but I fashioned it
myself. I have a utility called Bitmap Saver 1.0. I found it on CompuServe
(where, I can't recall), but it was created by a guy named Phil Robinson, aka,
philrobins@aol.com. You may want to E-Mail him to see how you can get it.
Basically, you install it in your WINPRV directory, and it appears under Control
Panel. This program is shareware, so you'll have to register it. If you have
any utilities that change GIFs to Bitmaps, you have a bunch of potential screen
savers available at Syrinx.

Finally, we have had a thread mentioning the popularity of Rush in High School.
When I was in High School (graduated in '85), we had one of those silly "Senior
Surveys." Rush was voted the second most popular band, right behind Floyd.
When they came to Columbus for Grace Under Pressure, around 100 of us went to
the show. There would have been more, but many of the freshman and sophomores
couldn't drive yet, and to walk from Delaware would have been about thirty miles
(though I would have done it)!

That is all (isn't that enough?),

Does anyone know if the laserdisc version of ASOH contains the

Also, on the Rush 'n Roulette RTB tour bootleg, they play an
abbreviated version of Subdivisions where the guitar solo starts
immediately after the first keyboard solo instead of the second,
thus skipping a verse. Does anyone know, just out of curiosity,

Subject: re:Geddy's Live vocals...

Saw your post in the NMS. I've amassed a fairly monstrous collection of live
Rush (and other progressive bands) audio over the years. After many housr of
listening to microscopic details and subtle intonations, I've noticed the
follwing about Rush live, just for your info:

Geddy's vocals seem , more often than not, to be Right On!!! Yeah, he
occasionally has a night with a few flat notes, or notes not quite high
enough for the song, but, the three of em are pretty damn accurate most of
the time. Geddy does on accasion, for the true fanatic, throw in an odd lyric
here and there. For example: I'm sure we've all noticed "Catch the Fish" in
Tom Sawyer. Or the classic "One likes to believe in the spirit of Baseball"
in some 80's live versions of Spirit Of Radio. But what about the "Hey,
Boobie..." instead of "Hey, Baby.." in In The Mood.
Alex, surprisingly enough is the one who seems to break loose the most. I've
seen and heard many shows during which Lerxst gets pretty silly. Most notably
the classic Moline show from the CP tour. They must have been in an
absolutely whacky mood that night. Breaking the ususal strait faced and
serious Rush tradition, the guys just get nutty... For starters, Geddy (in
mock southern accent) introduces several songs in the set as "one of our
favorite country western hits...". Alex, later sings lead vocals on "Closer
To Your House" (???!!!). Best of all, Lerxst sees fit to introduce the
memebers of the "orchestra" in a thick german accent. He introduces the
"handsome Charleton Heston on the drums", "on the guitar with the 4
strings..the fabulous Miss Barbara Streisand", and "I, of course, am the
wonderfully fabulous...Fabio !!" Very strange!

My all time favorite snipet of Rush wierdness, is from the Tuscon,Az show
from the Hemispheres tour. Apparently an overcrowded general admission show,
Geddy tries to convince the crowd to take two steps back before the show can
continue, claiming that otherwise, the concert will be ended which "would be
a Big Bummer!!" Call me nutz, but the whole concept of Geddy-CrowdControl is
way too alien for me!!

Oh, and for whoever is interested, "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is one of
the greatest achievements in a visceral medium.

Subject: Not enough Rush in the UK...

'ello, mate:
Well I'd have to agree!!! I'm a southern California boy myself, born & raised
on the spirit of Rush. I've seen 'em faithfully (multiple times) on every
tour since Farewll To Kings. And I can imagine how devastating it would be to
have Rush NOT come through my town for a tour. See, I lived in London back in
1987, and the place was just viod of Rush!! No Rush on the BBC, Very little
Rush even in the record stores!! I was going through withdrawls.... My
sympathy to y'all...

I can relate to your dillema though because, another favorite band of mine,
Marillion, pulled an inexcusable stunt last year!!! I've seen them on every
tour since Fugazi (that was their 2nd LP, back in 1984, for you the
uninitiated) and each tour has been spectacular, especially the early tours
with Fish!!. The venues in America, that they've been able to play , however
are ridiculously small clubs, in comparison to the arena and stadium tour
they've done in Europe. What an incredible disparity.
Anyway, when their "Brave" lp came out in '93, I was eager to see them
perform the entirety of this stunning orchestral concept piece live. To my
horror, Marillion skipped the US on their world tour!!!!??!!!??? If Rush ever
pulled that I'd have to be revived from an utterly dismal comatose state!!!
Once again, my appologies...
On the other hand, be thankful, you had regular tours from IT BITES, while
they raraely made it to our side of the Atlantic....

Subject: Rush Set lists...

branden, thanks for the thorough set list from the HoldYourFire tour in the
last NMS. I agree, the set lists of a band's previous tours is certainly a
worthwhile topic, especiallty for bands like Rush, who on accasion have
pulled out some weird & unusual songs to supplment the normal set list.. I
loved how they pulled out the Bytor/Necromancer medley during the English
dates of '77tour. Or how 'bout the live rendition of the rarely played
"Twilight Zone" back in '76!! Seems there are fewer surprises with each
subsequent tour (i've seen 'em every tour since AFTK), but I'm wondering if
you happen to know set lists for the first three tours. Most importantly I'm
wondering about the set list from the Caress Of Steel tour! Did they play the
Fountain Of Lamneth ??????
I heard them play "WipeOut" once. {LA Forum in '81}
Oh, and of course the reggae version of "Working Man" in '80 & '81.

quite possibly the best fare ever shown on television. neil's a fan (one

Subject: Setlist information

Well, my griping and complaining last time seems to have gotten a little
more response than it did a year ago. So, without any further ado, I'll
dispense a couple of setlists here and now (hope rush-mgr doesn't mind the
lengthy post) and see if it stirs up some interest.

Enjoy! And if anyone has any comments, questions, or corrections, don't
hesitate to mail me!

Here goes...

Completely unofficial SETLISTS FOR RUSH TOURS
Revision 1.2 -- July 16 1995

Compiled by Branden Robinson (branden@ecn.purdue.edu)

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SETLISTS

I have done the best I can to make sure this information is accurate, but
reason dictates that it is full of errors. There are a few things in
particular that are in doubt:

1) Order of sets for four short tours:
Short tour from August - September 1979
Tour of the Nadars (April 1982)
New York City shows (July 23 1983 and September 1983)
     Short tour in March 1985

2) Asterisked songs. An asterisk denotes a song that was not played in
its entirety. I judged a song as incomplete if the band didn't play darn
near ALL of it as heard on a studio album. Rush tends to make this an
easy call, though; even on tracks that fade, like "The Big Money" or
"Mystic Rhythms," they play *all* of the part that is faded, and sometimes
even add a closing section. I only made a couple of exceptions, like "The
Camera Eye" and "Witch Hunt." Even without the lengthy synthesized
intros, those I counted as complete, if the rest of the song was played.
One thing that can complicate this issue is if a song is interrupted by
another song or drum solo and then resumed. If the whole song is
eventually played, then neither part gets an asterisk; if something's
missing, then both parts get the asterisk.
Despite my efforts, some of this information is going to be wrong, so,
knowing my criteria, maybe *you* can help!

3) Segues (denoted by a ">"). Like "completion," this can often be a
judgement call. I think it's fairly easy to tell if something segues or
not, but in some cases I had unclear information and had to guess.

Those are the only major holes I can think of. In any case, don't take
this stuff as anywhere near confirmed info, it's just one fan's best
effort. I'll let bigger fans than I give it their stamp of approval if and
when it achieves a good degree of accuracy.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION THAT CAN HELP

Mail me. I would, for obvious reasons, like to hear from people who have
"media" available for confirmatory purposes. Memories can go bad, though I
certainly will accept multiple corroborating reports in the absence of
recordings.

If you have some choicey information, (say, a complete show from the Down
the Tubes tour) and don't want be bothered to duplicate your "source"),
then you can maintain your anonymity by asking me not to mention you on my
"thank you" list (which appears near the end of this file). Be sure you
inform me specifically that you want to remain unknown. My default is to
thank people publicly! :)

I also will keep your secret, and try to restrain myself from waving blank
tapes and postage in your face. :)

Please also remember that "media" are often chopped and edited together,
and there's nothing to stop "media manufacturers" from splicing together a
Grace Under Pressure show and a Moving Pictures show to make it look like
Rush played ALL of MP on that tour. So listen for nasty edits. If you're
a collector then that's obvious, of course. Please keep an eye out for
trickery!

I have no idea how imporant setlists are to people, but they fascinate me
(obviously). I hope you enjoy it...who knows, maybe it will stimulate the
memories of those who have seen shows I was too young to attend (like, say,
2 years old for 2112? :) )

lucky you are to get a Rush tour, let alone see more than one show . And then
you have the audacity to complain about the set lists !! I'd give anything
(almost), to hear the same set list night after night but as it is I've only
had the opportunity to see one show (excelent night at the Sheffield arena on
the RTB tour).

Do any of the other UK based NMSers know where I can pick up some good
boots, promos etc ? I'm based in Loughborough but I'm originally from
Sheffield and I'm quite happy to travel in search of some good stuff.

PS. Does anyone know if Alex has any plans to tour with his solo material ?

     Hello all....

I was wondering if any of you who've had kids have been inspired to
name your offspring after one of the guys in Rush? My wife and I
named our son Alex because we liked the name and Lerxst is good
people. Now we need two more for the whole set ;)

I'd like to recommend two bands that sound Rush-inspired. First off,
there's KONG from the Netherlands. *Very good* modern, experimental
band of guitar/bass/drums/keys whose material is completely
instrumental. They sort of sound like Rush at a mushroom party! The
other band is SYRINX. Gee, I wonder where they got that name....duh!
Both these bands aren't mainstream so you'll have to visit your
friendly neighbourhood independent record store for more details.

Subject: Toronto is NOT a Rush hotbed...

Considering that Toronto is the home of Rush, one would naturally expect
it to be a real hotbed of Rush fans. This I have NOT found to be true.

For example, Yonge street, record store capital of Canada, has NO record
stores that I know of that reliably sell live Rush. The one one that's
close is the CD Bar which can order stuff for you (it's listed it the
boot source file).

In terms of other Rush stuff... there isn't any more in Toronto than
there is any place else, as far as I know. Any big city with its
multitude of specialty shops is bound to have its share of rock shops
with un-rare Rush stuff, but TO has nothing really special.

If I was mayor of TO, things would be different. The roof of the SkyDome
would have some giant visible-from-space Rush picture.

I tried to run for mayor of St. Catharines (largely on the platform of
renaming Lakeport H.S. to Neil Peart H.S.) but the political machinery
kept me out of the race...

Good stuff can ALWAYS be found at record fairs/shows... no matter WHERE
you go. (except Chris Squire's solo album, which I can't find ANYWHERE).

Subject: Camera Eye Opener

Hey RUSH buds!

Okay, it is useless to make a statement like this, but what the hell:
"The Camera Eye" is absolutely killer and I think it should be the
opener on the next tour. I still get shivers when I put it on, even after
14 years of listening to it over and over and over and.....
Anyway, anybody else with me on this one? The way the intro just builds
and builds is beyond words. I think it would make a great opener.

Imagine this, the opening act has walked off and you're hanging out in
your seat with your buddies waiting and talking and nursing your beer
(you don't want to drink it too fast because you'll have to get a new one
and you might miss the beginning of the show). This is like the most
pensive moment ever, right!?! The waiting! Then - the house lights dim
and the crowd instantly stops their conversations and goes into a roaring
cheer. You stare at the stage in bewilderment and you can just make out
the little flashlights directing Ged, Neil, and big Al to their places. The
chills shoot up and down your back. Then - you hear Ged hit the intro
keyboard to "The Camera Eye". The song carries along, all the while
with no lights - yet. As the music builds to it's shuddering moment
of triumph, the lights come up at the point where Neil's drums segue into
Alex's lung compressing chords. Wow!

Sorry - I just had to get that out!

Brian (dreaming of "The Camera Eye" as an opener) Kohler
