===============================================================================
Welcome to Screaming in Digital, the unofficial electronic mailing list
for fans of Queensryche. A few real quick things about how to subscribe,
unsubscribe, contribute, etc.
1) This is a digest. If it gets big there may also be a mailing list.
2) If you have questions, or want to subscribe/unsubscribe, mail me.
3) If you have anything you want included, _please_ mail me.
4) Don't do a "group reply," this goes to nearly 200 people.
This digest will be published every Monday. If there are weeks of
particularly heavy activity, groupwise, there might be extra issues, or
extremely long issues.

Screaming in Digital (Editor's Note)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I decided to name all the sections after various 'Ryche songs.
I'm also considering a reversal of earlier policy (per user request) and have
added an eighth section, which will be for information on recording
availability and/or bootlegs.
A big part of this issue will be responses to Operation: Livecrime.
The number of subscribers continues to rise, and somewhere near 200 people are
receiving this digest (and that doesn't include the ones whose addresses I've
yet to get working... yes, there are several!) Of course, I'd like to expand
the list to reach a wider audience - don't be afraid to tell a friend.
Reaching users who are outside the US or outside the formal Internet structure
(read: FidoNet) is a primary goal, also.
Up to now, I have been sending all back-issues to new subscribers.
Starting with this issue, back-issues will be sent upon request. I hope to
have them available through FTP soon, to keep the mail flow here limited to
subscription/unsubscription/contribution material.

Neue Regel (What's new)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I doubt I really need to tell any of you this, but the new set,
Operation: Livecrime, is now out. I picked it up here (NJ) for $36.99, which
was a couple bucks below the _expected_ price. I have heard prices ranging
from the high 20's to the mid 40's for CD. The official release date (as
you know) was November 5, the store I got it at (and probably many others) had
it on the afternoon of November 4th. My opinions of the set thus far:
1) Dero was completely right when he said that people who love
Operation: Mindcrime will love this. It is an extremely well-executed set. It
does have its shortcomings, but overall it is some of the best work the 'Ryche
have done.
2) The video will look _reasonably_ familiar to those who saw the
concert. Some (most?) of us were not treated to the female vocalist's live
portrayal of Sister Mary, alas. I'm certain _none_ of us were in seats where
we could see the band as close as the cameras do, either.
3) To those who saw the concert _and_ Video: Mindcrime (available for
some time now) the video will be particularly interesting, as it features a
large amount of live footage beautifully merged with Video: Mindcrime footage.
4) The CD is, of course, wonderful. For the most part, it sounds like
Operation: Mindcrime (except that it's obviously live), but some changes
specific to this tour _do_ show up. "wars in South America" becomes "wars in
Saudi Arabia," et cetera.
5) The booklet is nice, featuring the Operation: Mindcrime libretto,
and, for the first time, the last word in the line "Twenty-five bucks a fuck"
is in _print_. There are also good stills from Video: Mindcrime, and concert
pictures. For those who are a little foggy as to what librettos are, it
consists of the song lyrics _and_ explanatory paragraphs in between the songs.
Those of us who got the tour program already _have_ the libretto (sans "fuck")
and will probably be less than thrilled with the booklet (I was) but for those
who did not make it to the concert, or haven't yet, or have questions about
just what is going on in Operation: Mindcrime, the booklet will be a useful
tome. [Nota bene: If you get the booklet, and then go to the concert, get the
program _too_, it is more comprehensive than the booklet.]
Overall, it's definitely worth the money, and you should all run out
and buy at least one. Unless you don't have the cash, in which case you should
ask for it for Christmas. After Christmas, it officially enters the realm of
things you have to get a dub of, since it won't be on shelves.
tme33711@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu writes:
Well, I'm listening to LIVEcrime right now...yes, I went to a local
record store at midnight last night and bought it. All the copies that they
had out at the time were gone in 10 minutes (I assume they saved some, but
you never know.) I bought the CD-package; it was sale-priced at $33.99. The
tour book is about 50 pages long, with a fold-out in the center. It contains
pictures of the 'Ryche on stage, pictures of the film/cartoon/etc shown on
the screens, all of the lyrics, and additional passages that help explain the
storyline. The sound on the CD is excellent. There are a few extras
musically, which anyone who saw the concert knows about: Extra guitar intro
before the (dare I use this word?) "rap" in the middle of "Spreading The
Disease," sudden pauses in the music where the crowd is singing by itself, and
"Anarchy-X-tra" at the end of "Eyes of a Stranger." Of course, all the chorus
backgrounds, Mary's voice, etc., were probably electronically sampled. I have
not watched the video yet because my VCR is broken. (Borg)
michaell@garfield.cs.wisc.edu writes:
I suppose I have a unique perspective on _Livecrime_, because I was at
the Madison show most of the footage/music was taken from. While in general I
like it, I do have some critical remarks about it as well.
The video moved from scene to scene far to quickly - I don't think it
is always appropriate. Some positions should have lingered much longer. That
may work for a MTV-style video, but not for an entire video.
A similar complaint may have more to do with having seen one of the
three shows included, but I found it a little irritating that each song
included clips from all three locations, rather than fixing on one location
per song. It doesn't necessarily make it seem very "live" to me. (Even
though it is, I am aware, standard operating procedure for things of this
nature.)
The Milwaukee show was the one to "really" have Sister Mary - in
Madison she was just projected. (And I would assume La Crosse too.)
Overall, I liked the CD more than the video, but hey - I'd probably
listen to the CD more than I'll see the video anyways. I'd still definitely
recommend it to any Queensryche fan, but I (right now) would not recommend it
to someone over the studio version of Mindcrime (unless it is really likely
that they will be upset about not owning Livecrime sometime in the future)
One final note - the libretto (the 52 page booklet) is really nice -
the lyrics are much more readable than the studio CD, and it's got a pretty
decent summary of the story as well. (Michael)
julies@jezebel.wustl.edu writes:
"I thought LIVEcrime was pretty good, except ... that they felt
the need to explain the story in the libretto, which was kind of disappointing.
I hope no real fan out there needed it. And, though it was $39.99 where i got
it, I consider it a bargain, since I would have paid at least $50. (Julie)
sjs@bae.bellcore.com writes:
"Well I slacked off and didn't get the video/cd set until Wednesday at
lunchtime. Stopped home to check mail and decided to play the video.
MISTAKE! Almost didn't get back to work! So far it looks great!" (Steve)

Speak (Reader Letters)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
darren@aerodec.anu.edu.au writes,
"Anyone in the Portland area who would be willing to help a mad keen
Queensryche fan from Oz fulfil a life's dream and get to see them? I'll be
arriving in the US late on the 15th of Dec... I can't make any of the other
remaining shows except perhaps Portland. Given that it could possibly be my
only chance to ever see them, I'd like to make contact with someone who could
buy a ticket for me and act as a contact when I reach Portland." (Darren)
{Sounds like a noble cause, folks, can someone out that way
help him out? -sh}
saschneider@cudnvr.denver.colorado.edu writes that
according to an interview in 1986, Geoff didn't attend any music
college, but that he may have been involved with music during high shool, and
that he was trained by David Kyle (who also worked with Ann of Heart.) Also,
Geoff reportedly used to work in an electronics factory, and first met Chris
in an abandoned warehouse. (Shari)
{abandoned warehouse? what is this, 'highlander?' -sh}
speno@chowder.rutgers.edu writes that
some of the phrases in the middle of "Silent Lucidity" are "Visualize
your dreams," "Record them in the present tense," "Put them in a permanent
form," and "If you persist in your efforts, you can achieve dream control."
(John)
ewk@psuvm.psu.edu writes that it's
"Record them in a permanent form." (Eric)
julies@jezebel.wustl.edu writes that it's
"...achieve a dream come true." (Julie)
jjm13@cwns6.ins.cwru.edu writes,
The guitar tab for "Silent Lucidity" which appeared in _Guitar for the
Practicing Musician_ late this summer (I think it was August) had the words of
the spoken section in it. I don't have the mag here, but it said something
like this:
Visualize what you dream. Record it in the present tense.
Put it into a permanent form. If you persist in your
efforts, you can achieve a dream come true...come true...
...dream come true...dream come true..."
The "dream come true" almost sounds like "dream control" toward the end,
but I think that's because the speed is slowing down. I don't know about
the other stuff at the end of the passage. Sounds almost like someone saying
"How's that, better?" (about 3:38 on the CD). Then there's a "Hug me" at the
end, right before Geoff comes back in. (Jeff)
w-graemp@microsoft.com writes regarding the guitar contest:
"There's a contest in this month's Guitar for the Practicing
Musician magazine for the Tri-ryche guitar and a copy of Operation: Livecrime.
10 runners up will receive copies of the Empire CD." (Graeme)
ju@aludra.usc.edu adds,
"To enter: put your name, address, phone number, and age on a post
card and mail it to:
EMI Records / Guitar Giveaway
P.O. Box 1490
Port Rochester, NY, 10573
One entry per person, postmarked no later than Nov 30." (Hannibal)
maupin@cs.washington.edu adds,
"The winner will be notified the first week of December. The grand
prize includes... the axe... Operation: Livecrime, and Empire on CD." (Maup)
aschaffe@polyslo.csc.calpoly.edu adds that
The guitar is an ESP and the winner will be notified by phone. (Allan)
mansfiel@gmuvax2.gmu.edu writes,
"What does Geoff mumble in Rage for Order? It's toward the end... but
he definitely mumbles something. Also for the musicians... does Eddie actually
play slap on the song Operation: Mindcrime or is he just plucking really well?
(Yoda Junior)

julies@jezebel.wustl.edu writes,
"I am a member of the fan club, and it's pretty cool. When I wrote a
letter asking about bootlegs and such, I received a fairly quick hand-written
response. It wasn't from the band of course, but I didn't write to the band.
The newsletters are pretty good, and they send postcards when they're going to
release a song, and they sent something a few months ago saying they were
releasing Operation: Livecrime. Also, you get to find out the tour dates
right away." (Julie)

Roads to Madness (Touring Info)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cfulkers@bbn.com writes,
"I saw QR back in July (I think) at the Patriot Center (Fairfax, VA.)
They were incredible. I could hardly believe it. Geoff tate was literally
rolling over the stage and acting everything out; his voice stayed crystal
clear and near "CD" quality. If I didn't know Mindcrime so well (voice
fluctuations, etc.) I would have had to say it was lip-sync'ed! The entire
show was absolutely incredible.
"I have had the opportunity to see a few really great bands (Aerosmith,
Scorpions...) all of which played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but when
it comes down to strict performance quality, QR had them all beat. I do,
however, have a few questions. I couldn't tell if it was just the soundsystem,
or maybe me, but it sounded like Geoff was on helium when he talked. He
doesn't *really* talk like that, does he?
"I heard rumors that when QR did their tour for Mindcrime originally
they opened for another band in the Capital Center (Landover, MD) and were
booed off the stage. Can this actually be true? No accounting for taste (or
the lack thereof.)" (Chris)

edwardsd@tramp.colorado.edu notes:
in Denver the 'Ryche show sold out (in less than a day, so I hear!!!)
and they added a second day, so now, in Denver, they play the 24th, and the
25th. (Dave)
{I heard the 11/24 sold out in 3-4 hours -sh}
ju@aludra.usc.edu gripes:
The Dec. 13 show at Long Beach is already sold out within 8 hours...
not much seats are left for the Dec. 14 show. (Hannibal)
maupin@cs.washington.edu notes:
Another show has apparently been added in Seattle on New Year's Day
(Jan 1.) The New Year's Eve show sold out in about 4 hours. (Maup)

The Whisper ('Ryche Dementia)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
saschneider@cudnvr.denver.colorado.edu writes:
"There is an episode of (the original) Star Trek in which a symbol,
very much like the tri-ryche, is displayed. I dont remember the episode title,
but in September when they showed the Star Trek anniversary show, this episode
was in the top ten countdown of favorites.
"In this episode, Scotty, Ohura(sp?), Kirk, and Bones were accidentally
transported into a parallel dimension- that is, a parallel universe in which
all of the same people exist, but where life is different because life there
has followed a different historical path. The four crew members mentioned were
transported to a 'Starship Enterprise' in this parallel dimension, where
everyone, instead of referring to the 'Federation of Planets' referred to
the 'Empire' (this name of course is also a point of coincidence between
Queensryche and Star Trek.) Conversely, the same four crew members of the
'Empire' dimension were accidentally transported to the 'Federation' dimension
we all know (and love.)
"This 'Empire' had for its symbol the planet Earth with a sword
piercing through the middle. Queensryche's 'tri-ryche' symbol used to look
very much like this. At the time of the 'Warning' album, Queensryche's symbol
was that of a sword with curved-down handles piercing the planet Earth. With
'Rage' and 'Mindcrime' this symbol has been slightly altered further and
further until it evolved into what we have now with 'Empire' - something that
looks like the top half of a sword but without planet Earth.
"As you can tell I really take pride in my little theory. I have no way
of knowing whether someone in or akin to the group got their idea for the 'tri-
ryche' from Star Trek either consciously or unconsciously. It's possible that
this Star Trek episode was of no influence at all, but with such a coincidence
it's fun to consider..." (S.S.)
{note: his reference to 'Warning' and 'Rage' may be reversed,
as the cover of my 'Rage' CD definitely depicts a tri-ryche
piercing the Earth. Other than that, I can't comment, not
having seen the Star Trek episode in question. -sh}

Spreading the Disease (Resources)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the subscribers to this digest has suggested that I allow
discussion of bootlegs as a part of the digest. As I am not aware of more than
one or two bootlegs of the 'Ryche, I had initially stated that I would not
include any references to bootlegs in the digest. However, in light of the
request, the possibility that there are more bootlegs available, and the fact
that European bootlegs now reportedly pay royalties and are therefore legal,
I will include information as follows:
Requests for information on specific bootlegs, or bootlegs in general.
Requests for specific bootlegs (not bootlegs in general)
E-mail addresses of people who send me bootleg availability info.
I don't want to use up digest space posting someone's complete contact
info, or complete collection of bootlegs, to over a hundred people. So, I'm
going to keep it all in a brief format. But I _will_ include it from now on.
Actual lists of bootlegs and such may be put into the archives for FTP
once I get that arranged.
jaconb@rpi.edu writes
"I talked to the owner of a record store here in Troy and he has a very
limited edition box set for...$140 OUCH...it includes: an Empire fold-out CD,
T-shirt, necklace, bracelet, (Tri-Ryche I would guess), and all three CD
singles; Jet City Woman, Empire and Silent Lucidity... yes it's very expensive
and he's getting one for me to look at...He will get the individual singles
for me if I want." (Brian)
pauls@ctron.com writes
"I have heard about a video... between their EP and The Warning...
a live performance in Tokyo... kicked some butt. Anyways, what is the
availability of this video?" (Paul)
{see the next paragraph, Paul! -sh}
ytsanyd@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu writes
"QR live in Tokyo is available overseas... I have access to this
tape but video formats {between Japanese and American} are not compatible
so I have to find a video place that will convert the tape to standard
American VHS... the Holland imports have more rarities... Everything the UK
cds have and more. Also the Japanese edition of their first EP contains a
demo(alternate) version of Prophecy... so Prophecy is available studio, demo,
and live..." (David)
{He also told me in a TALK connection that the Tokyo tape was
released stateside by Sony around 1984, but has been out of
print for sometime, and that there is also a compilation
video (of several metal bands) which includes the video for
"Queen of the Reich." -sh}
David's girlfriend adds:
"Live in Tokyo, Japan 1984!"
1. Nightrider 6. Blinded
2. Prophecy 7. The Lady Wore Black
3. Deliverance 8. The Warning
4. Child Of Fire 9. Take Hold of the Flame
5. En Force 10. Queen of the Reich
The video runs for approximately 50 minutes. (Tina)
cm5m+@andrew.cmu.edu writes,
"I have a question. I recently heard that some videos were made for
the mindcrime album. Among these was one for "Eyes of a Stranger". Does
anyone know about this one or any other off that album? If so, could I get a
brief description of them?" (Ceri)
{There is a widely available concept video called
"Video: Mindcrime". Any music/video store should have it in
stock, price is about $15-20. -sh}
mckinzie@math.wisc.edu lists these CD singles:
EMI560-20 4032 2 Empire Scarborough Fair Prophesy Della Brown
Empire and Della Brown are the album versions. Prophesy is the version
from the EP/cd, recorded during the Rage for Order sessions. (There
is a different studio version from _The Decline of Western Civilisation
Part II_ soundtrack.) Scarborough Fair is a Simon and Garfunkel cover,
recorded in 1986. CD pressed in Holland, I believe this is an import.
EMI CDMT 94 Silent Lucidity The Mission Della Brown
Silent Lucidity and Della Brown are album versions. The Mission was
recorded live 12-14-90 and 12-15-90 at Hammersmith Odeon, London. CD
pressed in UK, but I think this is a US release.
EMI CDMT 97 Best I Can Best I Can I Dream In Infrared Prophesy
The radio edit and full length versions of Best I Can. I Dream in
Infrared is the '1991 acoustic remix.' (Replace electric guitars
with acoustic, except solos.) Prophesy was recorded live 11-3-84 in
Tokyo. CD pressed in UK, again I'd guess this is a US release.
EMI CDP 560-20 3332 2 Eyes of a Stranger Walk In The Shadows
Take Hold of the Flame Queen of the Reich
All are standard album versions. Sort of a `best-of' cd. CD pressed
in West Germany, I believe this is an import. (Mark)
Mark also offers this list of Queensryche vinyl singles:
12" vinyl:
Suite Sister Mary Overseeing the Operation (UK)
Empire Scarborough Fair Prophesy
Silent Lucidity The Mission (live) Eyes of a Stranger (live)
Best I Can I Dream In Infrared (acoustic) Prophesy (live)
7" vinyl:
Eyes of a Stranger Queen of the Reich (UK)
Best I Can I Dream in Infrared (acoustic) (UK)
Empire Scarborough Fair (UK)
