Screaming in Digital (Editor's Note)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone here in the states, which means
your editor ate a tiny bit of turkey, then sat around with a chest cold.
Short work-weeks with paid holidays are among the few things that justify the
existence of "right-wing conservative fascists that run the US," as Chris
DeGarmo calls them. *grin*
It's now December, there's one month left of touring for the band,
after which they'll take a break... maybe. I'm certainly not the one to go
predicting their behaviour. As you probably know, the "love it or hate it"
LiveCrime box set vanishes after Christmas, theoretically to be replaced by
separately available CD and video, with the booklet nowhere to be found.
Wow, maybe I can sell the booklet as a collector's item, the tour program was
more fun to read.
If you didn't get your entry in for the Tri-Ryche guitar contest, oh
well. I didn't either. Sucks to be us, I guess. Not that I'd be able to
play anything beyond the Silent Lucidity single-note part anyway.
The FTP site still needs the lyrics to some songs - I've divided the
lyrics directory into subdirectories for each album (except Livecrime) and did
not get a chance to work on typing more of them in, unfortunately, due to
illness.
*IMPORTANT!* If you are LOSING your account(s) due to break (winter
break in the northern hemisphere, summer break in the southern) please let me
know so that I can suspend mailings to you until you return. So far only one
person has done this. I do not know your universities' policies on maintaining
accounts over breaks, and if you don't tell me, the mail keeps getting sent.

tme33711@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu writes,
"On MTV's Headbanger's Ball (11/23) one of the clips from Livecrime
was shown during a Queensryche video block. Unfortunately, I don't remember
if it was "I Don't Believe in Love" or "Eyes of a Stranger." I think it was
the former. Does anyone know if this video has been put on MTV's regular
playlist? (Tom)
{I think MTV's had a copies of at least one or two of the
more popular videos from Mindcrime / Video Mindcrime for
some time, but I didn't know they had anything in the way of
                Livecrime. -sh}

tjk@cs.utexas.edu writes,
"In the first few seconds of Chemical Youth, he is actually saying:
'I cannot help but get angry at times.' On a similar note, at the beginning
of Screaming in Digital, I can make out a woman's voice (perhaps digitized or
synthesized) that says, 'It occurs to me that I might not grow old.' Does
anyone have any idea where this came from (if it was indeed sampled from a
movie, show, other record etc...?)" (Todd)
{Got me... the weirdest thing's happened around me lyrically
was the time my fiancee was flipping channels on the TV and
ran across the "Doctor Davis, telephone please, Doctor Davis,
telephone... Doctor Blair, Doctor Blair..." from the start of
Eyes of a Stranger, on some soap opera... could it have been
                General Hospital? -sh}

RBoatz@ucs.indiana.edu writes,
"The idea on a new category for MTV Video Awards is wonderful! I
agree completely that Queensryche doesn't get enough noted airplay, and
something should be done about it. Any more suggestions?" (Regina)
{I'd kind of like to see more Queensryche on eMpTyV too, but
not just twice as much rotation of 'Silent Lucidity.' If they
                would play a wider _variety_ it would be much appreciated. -sh}

drd@gnu.ai.mit.edu writes,
"I am an extreme Queensryche fan, and have been since the debut of
"Silent Lucidity". If it is possible to actually wear out a CD, my "Empire"
and "Operation: Mindcrime" are getting there.
"Listening to Empire back when it was a 'fresh' CD for me, I thought
that there simply couldn't be music better than this. I still am amazed at the
band's ability to play together as a band, unlike a group like Van Halen where
it seems that most of the members do their own thing and it just happens to
sound consistent. To me, Queensryche's music is more that of a highly
coordinated orchestra, rather than a rock band.
"Anyway, I only have two Queensryche CDs, three counting "Operation:
Livecrime." All of these CDs have resulted in many many hours of playing. I'm
sure you all know it is awesome when you get a CD in which every track is
excellent. Few are like this; however, all of my Queensryche CDs are. I was
wondering if any of you could suggest which Queensryche CD to buy next. Aside
from "Empire" and "Operation: Mindcrime," what's the best?" (Darren)
{I like "Rage for Order" more than "The Warning" or the EP,
                but it's really a matter of taste. -sh}

I Will Remember (History)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sending this history (provided by jjm13@po.cwru.edu (Jeffrey) who
notes that it appeared in the late "Breaking the Silence" digest, and that it
was sent to that one by someone named Mark Lent) out in installments, as it's
somewhat lengthy. Each installment will deal with one of the band's releases,
this first one dealing with the history of the band up to the "Queensryche"
EP.

Band members, Geoff Tate, Michael Wilton, Chris Degarmo, Eddie Jackson, and
Scott Rockenfield came together late in 1981 at a Bellevue restaurant. Michael
and Chris knew each other from high school, but nobody really knew each other
well. Up until that time, they had all been in local garage type bands that
never got anywhere. Anyway, as Geoff tells it, "We all found ourselves in the
same room one evening at a fish and chips place called Skippers. It was a
Tuesday all-you-can-eat night and all of us poor musicians were trying to eat
all we could! We started talking to each other like "Don't you play guitar?"
and "Don't you play drums?" Then it was "Why don't we get together and jam and
see what happens!" We did and the rest is history."

Queensryche's home base is Bellevue, Washington. They were known as The Mob in
those days. The Rockenfield's basement was their studio (The Dungeon), where
by the summer of 1982 they perfected four songs they had written and recorded
a self-financed demo tape at Triad Studios in Bellevue. The finished product
testified to the young band's potential. The four songs, "Queen of the Reich",
"Nightrider", "Blinded", and "The Lady Wore Black" were eventually pressed on
Queensryche's 206 label, so you can see why the "206 copy" is already a
collector's item. The band name "Queensryche" came from the song "Queen of the
Reich". A lot of credit for the success of the Queensryche EP belongs to a
review that appeared in Kerrang Magazine by Paul Suter (February-March 1983).

By Autumn local Washington radio stations began playing the EP tracks. This
success resulted in a worldwide recording contract with EMI Records before the
band ever played to a live audience. EMI subsequently re-released the EP on
the EMI label. The first live performance Queensryche did was opening for
Zebra at the Paramount in Portland, Oregon, and the folling night at the
Paramount Theater in Seattle. By the end of 1983 Queensryche was supporting
bands like Quiet Riot, Dio, and Twisted Sister.

"This will return you a "Help File" with all the commands on how to FTP
via EMail.. Yeah, it takes longer, but when you don't have any other method of
checking out the Queensryche files, it's better then nothing!" (Jim)

So, that's the end of this issue. It's kind of small, which is to be
expected when you've got 4 days of holiday/weekend out of a 7-day editorial
period. Hopefully the next issue will be a little bit larger. Subscriptions
have begun to level off also (finally!), with only a few new subscribers this
week. Those of you who have been with me for a few issues might notice that
three sections (ryche spottings, classifieds, and dementia) aren't in this
volume - if you have something for any of those sections, please send it in.
Many thanks to Jeffrey for sending the history in, which let me add a section
to offset the temporary loss of the other three.

                                        Happy Holidays
