[Screaming in Digital]------------------------------------------[Editor's Note]
Greetings! To those of you who have just returned from winter break,
welcome back, I hope you had a good time. Back issues are available, as
usual, from the FTP site at glia.biostr.washington.edu.
Speaking of the discography, many thanks to those who've already
sent in information, and a reminder to those who haven't - if you have any
Queensryche things other than the CD's of the albums, please send me all
the information about it - even things that aren't recordings. (articles,
posters, t-shirts...)
On the "design the new tri-ryche" front - I'm going to take all the
submissions to this point and work up a design from them. You can stop
sending them now... Thanks much to everyone who contributed ideas!
[Neue Regel]-------------------------------------------------------[What's New]
New here in netland is a second partial FTP site. More info below.

archery@ccvax.ucd.ie writes,
"I was listening to Warning last night, when it suddenly struck me
that Geoff sounded a fair bit like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden in several of
of the songs. What do you think?" (Ciaran)
borella@cs.ucdavis.edu writes,
"Someone please end this debate I've been having with myself. My semi-
trained ears think that Geoff has a 4 1/2 octave voice. But I've heard people
say that he can actually go over 5, and others say he's limited to 4. Any
*real* vocal students out there who know what they're talking about?" (Mike)
ju@aludra.usc.edu writes,
"I still see LOTS copies of the LiveCrime box set in just about every
store, but as for separated packages, I still haven't seen any yet." (Eddie)
{I guess maybe it was just a rumour? -sh}
speno@chowder.rutgers.edu writes,
"It sounds like the movie you are thinking of is 'The Hidden'." (John)
{Uh-oh. I hadn't taken into account that there could be two
movies with similar plots, both using the same soundclip! -sh}
ju@aludra.usc.edu writes,
"Chris DeGarmo was saying that "I don't know what happened to Dr.X..."
but for those who saw the video of "Eyes of a Stranger" Nikki sees that the
Doctor at the emergency room turns out to be Dr. X - does anyone have an
explanation ofg that? I think he somehow managed to make it into the operating
room to kill Nikki before he spills everything to the authorities." (Eddie)
rcleveng%eagle@blackbird.afit.af.mil writes,
"In SiD v11 someone was talking about a sci-fi movie that had
"Calling Dr. Blair ..." etc. The movie described sounded like The Hidden.
I have not seen this movie for a while, so I cannot be sure." (Raymond)
borella@cs.ucdavis.edu
"As a long time Queensryche fan I've always been up on bands that were
influenced by the boys and others who sound similar (no clones, please) but
unique enough to catch my interest.
"I'm sure a lot of people have heard of Fates Warning, but how about
Twelfth Night? Or Step Ahead? Anyone want to know more? Any other fans of
the obscure gems besides me?" (Mike)
[Roads to Madness]-----------------------------------------------[Touring Info]
archery@ccvax.ucd.ie writes,
"Do you know whether Queensryche are planning to come to Ireland? I'd
love to see them. I think they might have been here during last year, before
I became interested in them, and so I've probably missed them, but I live in
hope." (Ciaran)
ju@aludra.usc.edu writes,
"Comparing notes from a fellow fan I found out that Queensryche's
latest tour was totally fixed... even the jokes were the same at every show!
Maybe we should have people write in what they feel about it." (Eddie)
{Actually, Geoff had a repertoire of at least a few jokes
about how Mary died, but it did seem apparent that there were
only a few. Of course, he's a singer, not a comedian. ;) -sh}

borella@cs.ucdavis.edu writes,
"Concerning Geoff Tate: I've been a fan since 83-84 when I heard
"Queen of the Reich" on a late night metal show (this was back before metal
was vogue enough to be put on prime time). I was impressed most by Geoff's
voice, which I still think is the best I've ever heard.
"I got "The Warning" and the EP, and Queensryche became one of my
favorite bands. Seeing them live was a blast and I was pleasantly surprised
that he could hold the notes of "Queen of the Reich" and "Take Hold of the
Flame" as well live as he did on the album. I saw them again on the Rage tour
which was pretty good though the makeup and leather jacket image bullsh*t was
pretty lame. One thing I noticed is that Geoff didn't hold the notes
(screams) in the two forementioned songs for as long as before. Hmm...
"Ok, so a friend of mine meets them in a store and reports that Geoff
was chain smoking the whole time. I loved the vocal harmonies on Rage but
there was a distinct lack of Geoff extending his voice to the limit like
before. Ok, no prob...
"On the Mindcrime tour he bailed out even earlier on the screams,
though as a whole the show was the best so far. Hmm again... 2+2=4. More
image bullsh*t with MTV, but the music is still good and "Suite Sister Mary is
a great song.
"Finally they headline this summer, so I run out to see them. I was
disappointed with "Empire." Geoff's voice is still "perfect" but he doesn't
do anything with it that he hasn't already done. The rest of the band fall
into cliches and I lose respect for Scott Rockenfield who I used to think was
a really good drummer. The show was great even though the "fake" backing
vocals are lame. But no scream at all for Take Hold of the Flame.
"Ok, so you probably see my point here. QR is (was) a great band but
the main attraction that they held for me was above-average lyrics and
fantastic vocals. What happened? Does he not do it by choice or is it that
he can't? Goeff Tate is my favorite vocalist because no one can sing like
him. Now *he* doesn't even sing like him. What gives?" (Mike)
{If Geoff does smoke, especially heavily, his vocal ability
and quality are bound to go down the tubes eventually.
Vocalists that lose out to smoking, to me, rank up there with
the rockers that die of substance abuse, in terms of tragedy.
Smoking and singing mix like drinking and driving. -sh}
darcy@metro.bst.rochester.edu writes,
"I have been following the group since they released the EP
"Queensryche" way back when (I think I first heard "Queen of the Reich" in
late 1983)." (Sean)
archery@ccvax.ucd.ie writes,
"I myself became interested in Queensryche last year, when I saw some
of their videos on MTV. The first to catch my attention was "Best I Can",
followed by "Silent Lucidity." I then saw "Empire" in a record shop, and
decided to buy it. I instantly fell in love with it! I think my favourite
track has to be "Jet City Woman", followed closely by "Silent Lucidity." I
then set about getting their older stuff, buying "Warning" and "Rage for
Order." I initially didn't like them as much as "Empire," but have since
grown into them.
One of my friends then raved on about "Operation: Mindcrime," saying
that it was some kind of concept album, and pretty damn good. Thus I hunted
it down, eventually getting it. Well, what can I say - I was blown away. It
is definitely my favourite of the albums.
I have been trying to get "Operation: Livecrime," but no one seems to
have it here. One shop said they had it, but it was sold out. I fear that it
would have been an import, and thus mucho expensive. And now it looks like
I'll never get it here, since no shop seems inclined to get it. But I hope to
be going to the US for the summer, so perhaps I'll be able to pick it up
there." (Ciaron)
ruelle@isp.nwu.edu writes,
"I kinda like the new tri-ryche ideas...the present one is cool, but
but it loses some of its effect when it doesn't all fit on one screen. But,
one thing the new ones were lacking was the distinctive diamond "hole" in the
top. So, I put one in... I guess it looks ok... Anyway, just another idea
for you to play with." (Travis)
{I noticed there was something missing too, but hadn't gotten
around to fixing it... *grin* Okay. We've got a basic size
and shape for this beastie, so I'm going to stop publishing
suggestions after these two, and start working on developing
the final version of the new header. -sh}

[Spreading the Disease]---------------------------------------------[Resources]
This weekend, a second partial FTP site was opened, at the address
quartz.rutgers.edu, courtesy of the head operator of QuartzBBS/QuartzParadise.
Currently, the site just contains back issues of SiD, but he's offered to let
it expand to hold lyrics too. All the files on the site are in unix compress
format (*.Z) but this site allows you to read compressed files while
connected. It's a pretty fun feature.
ferg@brahms.udel.edu writes,
"A friend of mine gave me a Queensryche bootleg for Christmas... of
their show in Philadelphia on July 23, 1991. This was a great gift... I had
tickets to that show and got sick so I had to miss it. Anyway, the quality
is kind of crappy. It was apparently taped by someone in the audience with
a personal cassette recorder. On some songs, you can hear the guy standing
next to him singing louder than Tate.... It's still pretty cool, so if
anyone is interested, let me know." (Christopher)
[]---------------------------------------------------------------------------[]
I'm so glad this is issue 12... Putting out issue 13 on the 13th would
give me nightmares. And so ends the first dozen.
Keep those contributions and discography records coming in, and don't
forget to send in what _you_ think the lyrics to "Last Time in Paris" are ;)
