Hello again! Another week closer to the one-year mark.
I'm fine and hope you all are too. In this issue: New folks, an
album map, old videos, new singles, a newspaper interview, boots,
Pamela Moore, and, once again, no sex.
As I type this, a couple wandering 'British Metal Babes'
are sitting and/or lying in my room, reading strange blasphemous
books... they'd like to say hi to their fellow 'Rychers at
Coventry... and, I presume, everywhere else.

This is my first letter to the group as I only found out
about it last week and yet I have been a fan since '88 of the
best group in the world, Queensryche.
Now it has come to my attention that this fabulous group
has airplay all over the world except in this country, Australia.
No songs off the Empire album were played on the radio and the
only coverage they got was when they played on award shows like
        billboard.
                Now to some questions:
Does anybody have the words to the Warning album?
When will the new album be released?
Will it be like "Empire?" (i hope not)
Why was there a huge change from "Operation: mindcrime"
to "Empire" in music style and content?
Does anybody have Queensryche songs not released on the
        official albums?
{The lyrics to The Warning can be FTPed from
                        glia.biostr.washington.edu, in /pub/queensryche.
The new album will be out late this year, or
early next year. It will not be like Empire.
Queensryche likes to explore new ground on each
album. A few songs not found on the albums are
                        on the B-sides of singles.  -sh}

From where does the Try-ryche symbol come?
{It's just a symbol they thought looked cool,
                        when they were first starting the band.  -sh}

Did anyone ever hear word of the forthcoming posters of
the Dean Markley ad of Michael and Chris on the baseball cards?
I wrote to them and did not get a reply...
{You might want to try calling them, if you have
their phone number. I believe it was on the

I picked up a pair of EMI-UK CD single releases this
weekend that I didn't find on the CD single list at glia.
They are both part of a 2-part set for 'Silent Lucidity'
        identified as CDMTS104 and CDMT104.
                Disk one:
                        'Silent Lucidity'
                        'Eyes of a Stranger' (LIVE)
                        'Operation: mindcrime' (LIVE)
                Disk two:
                        'Silent Lucidity'
                        'Suite Sister Mary' (LIVE)
                        'Last Time in Paris'
The first disk comes in a unique, three-piece jewel box
with a small fold-out poster containing pictures of each band
member. The live tracks are all from "Operation: LIVEcrime".
This may be the first release of "LIVEcrime" tracks outside of
        the boxed set.

I've finally got a copy of "Live in Tokyo," and it's
great. It's great to see what they looked like/sounded like at
the release of "The Warning." There are some great camera shots
of Scott playing the drums, taken from over his right shoulder
        that i especially enjoyed.

I went to a record show last week and picked up some
video from a Detroit show in 1991. It's from the Palacevision
feed (What they show in the boxes at the Palace). The sound is
perfect. The video is very good.
Does anyone else have any bootleg video? What is the
history of bootleg video? I have many audio for other artists,
        but very little video.
You all should try to find record shows. They are gold
        mines.

                "Talking With" Queensryche
by Tricia Bonamo and Amanda Travaglione
Newsday, October 13, 1991, section II page 2
                (copied without permission)

We spoke with 29-year-old guitarist Michael Wilton of the
group Queensryche, while he was in Manhattan recently. Their
latest album "Empire" hit the charts almost immediately. The
group has been together for a decade; it still has all its
        original members.

                Q. How did you come up with this name?
                A. When we started we put together this four-song,
self-produced EP (extended play). We met up with this record
store owner and he thought it was so good that he would put up
some money and press it on an album. We got to the point where
we had orders of 20,000 units and we needed a name. We had a
song called "Queen of the Reich." We just combined the two words,
spelled it differently. The name has no significant meaning. It's
something we thought looked cool and now we spend the rest of our
career explaining how to say it.

                Q. Were you always musically inclined?
                A. I have a father who has a huge music collection. I
listened to music growing up from an early age. I was always
surrounded by music. No one in my family came from a trained
        musical background.

                Q. What was your childhood like?
                A. My parents were very supportive. I did a lot of
sports when I was young. I played baseball and I was on the USA
team and we played all those teams from Europe. I got sick of
baseball. It got too political. Now I am in something that is
        even worse.

                Q. How did you guys get together?
                A. We are all from the Seattle area. I knew Chris
(DeGarmo), the other guitar player, through high school. We took
the same music classes and had the same musical influences. We
thought having a band would be a cool idea. We met Scott
(Rockenfield), Ed (Jackson) and Geoff (Tate) and we did cover
tunes. I guess we were just a garage band at the time. We just
realized that we had something that worked well together and a
kind of magic happened. We realized that if we wanted to make
it we would have to write our own music. The problem was there
were no places that would play original music, they all played
Top 40. We took the alternate route and got day jobs and
        practiced and recorded at night.

                Q. What type of music do you like?
                A. Everything except country. I try to expose myself to
as much music as possible. I try not to listen to anything that
is remotely similar to what we play.

                Q. What made you become this type of musician?
                A. It is my personality and influences that makes our
blend of music. My influences were the Beatles, Rolling Stones
        and Led Zeppelin.

                Q. Do you get nervous when you get onstage?
                A. Yes. But I like that. It excites me, I get this rush
just knowing it is a different crowd every night and not knowing
how they are going to react to you.

                Q. What are the positives and negatives about being
        famous?
                A. We can travel the world and just enjoy what we do -
make music. The downside is the more popular you get, the more
exposed you are. That means the less privacy and free time you
have. You get to the point where you are touring for a year to
a year and a half and you start missing your home and family.

                Q. Do you find it hard keeping relationships because of
        the traveling?
                A. I'm married and we have a good relationship but it's
tough. I try to fly my wife out every four weeks. Otherwise I
        will lose my mind.

                Q. Do you like being in the Monster Tours?
                A. The good thing is being exposed to over a million
people for six weeks. We are fourth on the bill and we are
limited to a 50-minute set. We just came back from Europe from a
full-production, two-hour set, so we are limited with what we can
do. So it is good and it's bad. We are going to be in Eastern
        Bloc countries.

                Q. Do you like making videos?
                A. Making them is boring. You are always waiting - the
lights, technical problems or makeup. You do a half hour of
footage and it takes 15 hours.

                Q. Do your songs pertain to your personal life?
                A. Yes. We write songs that interest ourselves.

                Q. Do you have any personal problems within the group?
                A. Yes. But it is not conflicting in any way. We have
been together for so long that we all can take a little
criticism to push us farther. We know each other so well that we
don't have problems. There are points on the tour where we get
        tired and edgy.

                Q. Did you ever feel that this career is too much to
        handle?
                A. The business side is overwhelming. We are musicians
and we want to be creative. We have to basically watch over it
so money doesn't end up in the wrong place. You don't want
        people ripping you off.

                Q. Why don't more of your songs make it on the radio?
                A. We write songs for albums, we are not into the
singles. It just so happens that this single, "Silent Lucidity,"
has crossed over into the Top 40 format. It is new territory for
us to be in the Top 10 with Mariah Carey and M. C. Hammer. Here
is a band where people can't even pronounce our name.

                Q. Did you ever think the group wouldn't make it?
                A. I don't think in negative terms. I only think
        optimistically.

                Q. Do you have any regrets?
                A. No. I think everything has happened for a reason. We
have had our ups and downs. We have learned from our mistakes.
We are happy with the way they have turned out.

identity of the singer of Mary's part in "Suite Sister Mary" the

is just the spoken voice, singing, or both. Someone suggests
that the voice is Chris DeGarmo's. I find that hard to believe.

Fates Warning, Rush, and Psychotic Waltz).
This is from an article in the February 1992 issue of
Burrn! Magazine (A Japanese Heavy Metal Magazine). Translations
were done by Jester, so there are mistakes (a lot of this was in
Japanese, and some of it was untranslatable).

down the middle (I don't know what the axis represents, but

from THRASH to POP with Thrashier albums to the left, and more
pop oriented albums to the right. I tried to put the asterisks
(*) approximately where the album covers were in the original

                        "more traditional" and "more progressive,"
respectively, but if that's the case, whoever
originally made the chart didn't listen to very
                        much of "Transcendence."  -sh}

Have a good week, enjoy your classes if you've got them,
and I hope your weather's as nice as the weather here. Oh, for
those of you who're into homework - I've been pondering the
meaning of the song 'Roads to Madness' off "The Warning." Anyone
have any ideas? Feel free to write, of course...

                                                'Ryche on,
