        HIT PARADER BLURB dwb4025@rigel (Dave)
In the new issue of Hit Parader magazine, there was a
brief blurb about the new Queensryche album. I believe it was in
a section titled Rumours or some such, and said "Is Queensryche
taking it slow on the creation of their new album," or something
to that effect. They had a video review of "Building Empires" at
the very back, with a small photo of the band.

        ANYBODY LISTENING VIDEO gim@maths (Grant)
Does anyone know where the 'Anybody Listening?' video -
mountains, misty pine forests - from "Building Empires" was shot?
It looks Norwegian, with all the fjords and mountains.
                        {Washington state, their home turf. -sh}

        NEW ALBUM STATUS? neilu@gti-ia.nl (Neil)
Anyone know the status of Queensryche's new album?
{EMI says they're still writing songs, and it'll
                        be out in late 1993 or early 1994.  -sh}

        TRIVIA lab_helmts@vesper (Terry) ]
A radio station here in Billings, MT plays a rock trivia
contest in the evenings for prizes. One question referred to a
singer's lack of formal training and that he studied human vocal
anatomy and physiology to learn how to sing. This was about
Geoff Tate. Is there any truth to this? I was curious, because
        he has a fantastic voice.
{Yes, Geoff taught himself to sing by studying
                        books and diagrams of the vocal anatomy.  -sh}

UGLY KID JOE VIDEO lissa@neuron (Melissa)
The Ugly Kid Joe video for 'Cat's in the Cradle' looked
like 'Best I Can' and 'Silent Lucidity' because Matt Mahurin
directed all of them. MTV now lists the directors at the end of
the video, and I was very happy to see that Matt did that video.
        He did 'Empire,' as well.

        LONDON LIVE cmr@cch (Chris)
They performed 'London' live on the one-off date they did
at London's Hammersmith Odeon on the "Operation: Mindcrime" tour,
April 29th, 1989. They also did all the EP including 'Prophecy.'

COVER BAND - OUIJA smm@uunet (Steve)
I was down in Virginia Beach for a Dream Theater show,
and a band called Ouija opened (the first decent band I've seen
open for them in 8 shows). They covered 'Walk in the Shadows,'
and did a pretty damn good job in my opinion. Keep an eye out
        for them.

SILENT LUCIDITY DOUBLE CD cmr@cck (Chris)
About the double CD of 'Silent Lucidity,' in the first
one there is a banner with pictures of the band on it. As far
as I can remember both CDs have tracks from "Operation Livecrime"
(I know one has 'Suite Sister Mary' on it), plus the second CD
has 'Last Time in Paris' on it!

        OPERATION: EMPIRE terryj@sfu (Terry)
Operation: Empire sold originally for $100, so I thought
that its price would have gone up. With 1000 worldwide, you'd
think it would be considered rare. Maybe it's listed in whatever
you look up promo CD's values in?

        OPERATION: EMPIRE wilsonp@ucsu (Phil)
I purchased a complete "Operation: Empire" for about $69
a few months back, and I noticed that they had a couple more
behind the counter. I've seen at least 6 or 7 go through this
store. Not sure of the price, but I'm sure they're still
available, since they were there a few weeks ago. The set is
definitely worth picking up! For those of you who have them,
one question: the "Empire" CD didn't have a booklet with it, did
it? Mine was autographed by Michael and someone else. I can't
make out the second signature. I know that it's too short to be
Scott's. A great collector's item, no doubt about it!

        OPERATION: EMPIRE NUMBERS smm@uunet (Steve)
The number is underneath the top cover of the box set.

        OPERATION: EMPIRE NUMBERS maksymc@gnu (Chris)
The number for the "Operation: Empire" box set is found
on the little paper inside the box.

LIVE IN TOKYO AVAILABILITY sqb2600@afcluster (Stef)
While it is true that Blockbuster is able to get "Live in
Tokyo" for anyone, beware. When they order a video for you it'll
be the listed price, but if it's a video already in stock at the
store chances are that the price was hiked up substantially.
Anyone who has major problems finding a video can e-mail
me, sqb2600@acfcluster.nyu.edu. I work at Blockbuster and have a
small discount, and as I remember, most of the videos are still
        available through the distributors.

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

        NM 156 MEANING birchall@pilot (Editor)
One of the big topics this week - generating enough mail
for an issue all to itself - was the meaning of 'NM 156.'
Stephen, Chad, Gerhard, Jason, Steve, Barry, Pete, Eddie, Ian,
William, and Chris all had comments on it. Everyone agrees that
the song relates to a society in which people are known by
numbers, thus dehumanizing them, and population is controlled by
termination of those whose numbers come up. In more detail, it
was suggested that NM 156 is the operator of one of the computers
which selects the numbers for termination, and he questions the
ethics of the system, particularly when his own number comes up.
Those who find the concept interesting may want to read
Orwell's "1984" or Huxley's "Brave New World." Also mentioned
were the movie "Brazil," an episode of Star Trek in which a war
was conducted entirely without weapons, with the "casualties"
decided by computers and then terminated, and an episode of The
Twilight Zone which was said to be the inspiration for the song.
It was also stated that the song apparently developed
from an old instrumental solo called 'Waiting for the Kill.' I'm
not sure whether this is the solo found on early bootlegs.

THIN LINE LYRICS SUMMARY birchall@pilot (Editor)
The other hot subject was the phrase "Don't speak the
word" in 'The Thin Line.' Chad, Tom, James, and Chris were all
quick to suggest that it refers to a 'safe word' used in "S&M"
activities to indicate that someone's had enough and wants to
stop. Obviously, not speaking the word means that the recipient
of such treatment doesn't want it to stop. Trysh sent an
        article excerpt, which follows.

        ARTICLE EXCERPT dezire@carson (Trysh)
The following is an excerpt of an article entitled "Pomp
& Circumstance" by Mary Dickie that appeared in the June 1991
issue of Music Express. This piece should more or less explain
what "The Thin Line" is about.

Do they find it easy to write together - how does the
        collaboration work, exactly?
"There's no formula really," says Geoff. "Lots of times
Michael will have a riff he's been working on, on tape, and he'll
play it for me and I'll listen to it for a while. Sometimes I'll
write something right off the bat; other times it'll sit for
months and nothing happens. On this album we had a different
experience with 'The Thin Line' - we just had a jam session
together. Michael had the riff, and we just started playing and
        rehearsing and adding to it."
That is an intriguing song lyrically, with fear, sex,
love and pain all intermingling. Since Geoff wrote the lyrics,
can he explain what it's about exactly?
"No, I can't!" he says, laughing. "I can't put it into
words. Actually, I used the William S. Burroughs approach to
writing. I wrote down a lot of words that I liked on a piece of
paper and cut it into little pieces and threw them up in the air,
and just sort of saw where they landed. Sometimes they give you
        ideas."
"Geoff's selections of words that day just happened to be
oriented towards, shall we say, the darker side of love," laughs
        Chris.

I WILL REMEMBER MEANING smm@uunet (Steve)
When I spoke to Chris, Mike, and Geoff on Rockline way
back when, I asked them about 'I Will Remember,' as well as 'NM
156' and 'Screaming in Digital' and my personal interpretations,
and what they thought. I had expressed the fact that 'I Will
Remember' seemed to be about spy satellites. Though they didn't
_confirm_ it directly, their answers seemed to indicate that I
        was on target.
Speaking of which, if anyone has that Rockline episode on
tape, I would _love_ a copy. I taped it, but it didn't come out.

EYES OF A STRANGER VIDEO slkg8@cc (Russ)
Going back to Dr. X's face in the 'Eyes of a Stranger'
video, I think that his appearance is from a hallucination, drug
induced or from psychosis. That would flow with the video (and
the album) better than Dr. X being there to assassinate Nikki.
Why should he? Nikki is only a worthless babbling psychotic
junkie in the authorities' eyes. Not worthy of Dr. X's personal
attention, and probably not believed by any of the cops in the
first place. I don't see Dr. X being a doctor, even though it is
possible I suppose. I like the paranoid fear theory the best.

        _The Killing Words_________________________Babble Interpretation_

RONALD REAGAN GUEST APPEARANCE cp_pwm@cms (Paul)
In 'Mission', the priest on TV who gets shot by Nikki
(the one who says "I'm asking for hands to be uplifted") sounds
to me remarkably like Ronald Reagan. Is it really Ronnie, is it
meant to sound like him, or have I just mis-heard it?
{The preacher's voice is Scott Mateer; Reagan is
                        seen in some of the videos (getting shot).  -sh}
