Welcome to August! Back-to-school sales are in full
swing, and SiD's on course to have 1,000 readers at the beginning
of the academic year (plug, plug, get a friend to subscribe! ;)
This volume's not quite so protracted as the last issue,
but the reading's just as deep. I'm sending it a few hours early,
as I'm heading off to the national model railroad convention in
Pennsylvania sometime in the dark hours.

Joyce, the fanclub archivist, has gotten the green light
from Metal Sushi to send out the archives, so they're being
copied and will be in the mail shortly to those who've ordered
them. As I've mentioned before, I'll be working this fall on
expanding the discography files on the FTP site, based on the
        information contained in the archives.

back volumes of "Screaming in Digital" are now available through
a dial-up Gopher server. It works just like Gopher on the net,
but is accessed by modeming to (609) 778-5572 and logging in as
gopher. Right now it contains the first 96 volumes, listed by
volume number and date. You can read volumes online, or download
them. I recommend using a vt-100 terminal emulation.

        MTV INFLUENTIAL BANDS ryche@delphi.com (Kevin)
On MTV, this entire weekend was dedicated to rock and
metal music. Saturday afternoon they aired a special
Rockumentary about rock and roll. No specific band was at the
center of attention, only rock and roll. Anyhow, they named
Queensryche as one of the 4 most influential rock bands of the
90's. Faith no More was another one. At least MTV is right
        about something!

        HEADBANGER'S BALL dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu (David)
This past weekend, eMpTyV's headbangers's ball showed
the video for 'Queen of the Reich,' much to my amazement.

        REAL WORLD VIDEO? 15062998r@servax.fiu.edu (Jorge)
Any word on a 'Real World' video? I work at a record
store, and the single is selling very well. If MTV got a hold of
a video, this would be huge!
{I haven't heard about one, and since CBS put out
the soundtrack and Queensryche's on EMI, both
                        labels would have to agree.  -sh}

        FUTURE OPENING ACTS ryche@delphi.com (Kevin)
There has been discussion on here about who should go on
tour with Queensryche. Extreme would be one of my first choices.
If you have heard "Three Sides to Every Story," you know why.
I'd also like to see either Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots.
Okay, I know they are alternative rock, but you have to give
Pearl Jam and Extreme credit for writing a couple of cool
concept albums - "Three Sides to Every Story" and "Ten." Call
me crazy, but I think it would work!

        JAPANESE BOOTLEG ad028@freenet.carleton.ca (Ian)
I saw a copy of a double CD set from Japan in my local
record store the other day. It had a picture of the guys with a
city as a background. I think some or all of it may have been
live. I was tempted to buy it, but thought maybe I'd ask if
anybody else had heard the discs. Is it worth the 40 bucks they
        want for it?

        REAL WORLD SINGLE s1170796@giaeb.cc.monash.edu.au (Phil)
Does anyone know whether 'Real World' will be lifted off
the Last Action Hero soundtrack as a single release like AC/DC's
'Big Gun' was, or am I doomed to have to buy the album for a few
tracks? Or is it likely that 'Real World' will be on the new
album when it comes out? The sooner the better, right guys?

        REAL WORLD SINGLE bellivea@hellchild.ctron.com (Alan)
I just picked up the cassette single for 'Real World.' I
really like the song and didn't care to buy the whole soundtrack.
Another reason I bought it is that the B-side contains 'Last Time
in Paris,' another great song. Kind of a soundtrack theme on
        this one.

        REAL WORLD SINGLE edju@chaph.usc.edu (Eddie
I just bought 'Real World' on cassingle since I don't
listen to radio at all. I couldn't find it in CD single format
either. The tape has 'Last Time in Paris' on the B-side. The
production didn't sound too good, and frankly I wasn't impressed
by the song at all. Sure, there were some trademark licks from
Chris, but as a song it doesn't leave you with anything after you
        heard it.

        REAL WORLD SINGLE debont@kub.nl (Anne-Marie)
I went to several music stores in Utrecht, Netherlands
July 23, and tried to get the CD single of 'Real World.' In
most stores they had never even heard of Queensryche, but in
two stores they knew about the band and the song.
In one store they told me that they knew nothing about a
CD single of 'Real World' and that they thought it would not be
released other than on the soundtrack CD, but they were not sure.
In the other store the guy told me that he was very sure
that 'Real World' would _not_ be released as a CD single because
the soundtrack is published by Sony Records while Queensryche are
with EMI and according to this guy Sony would not give permission
to EMI to release a CD single from this soundtrack because that
would decrease the sales of the soundtrack.
Does anyone know if this is true? I think these reasons
are rubbish. I'm afraid however that this does mean that the
single is not available in the Netherlands, at least for now. If
anyone has the single, please send me the record number, or other
details, so that I can try to order it here - and so that I have
        a proof that it exists.

        REAL WORLD SINGLE ryche@delphi.com (Kevin)
To answer all the questions of whether there is a CD
single for 'Real World,' yes. I just got mine the other day.
It has three different versions of the song: the album version,
an edit version without the hard and soft ending, and another
edit version without the hard ending.
No pictures of the band or anything. The inner sleeve
has, in black and white lettering, the names of the bands who
        have songs on the soundtrack.
{This is a _promo_ CD, not a widely available
                        release.  -sh}

        EMPIRE BOOK ad028@freenet.carleton.ca (Ian)
I have the "Empire" book and aside from it's missing a
transcription of 'The Thin Line' it's unbelievable. The tab is
different from that found in guitar magazines, but you'll get
used to it fast. The songs are _really_ well transcribed and
nothing was left out. You never really realize how complex,
musically speaking, the 'Empire' album is until you take a look
at this book. Also, there's no mention as to who transcribed the
book, so I'm wondering if maybe the guys - Chris and Michael -
        did the transcribing themselves?
{I should point out that the book does _not_
cover much in the way of bass lines. For those,
                        magazines are still your best bet.  -sh}

        MILAN BOOT PRICE 15062998r@servax.fiu.edu (Jorge)
Can you find out the prices on some of the live imports,
        especially the Milan one?
{Anyone know a price on the "Ryche 'N Roll" boot
double-CD? I don't have it, mail Jorge if you
                        know!  -sh}

        EARLY LIVECRIME dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu (David)
I was looking back at the November 1991 issue of Guitar
for the Practicing Musician, that had the ESP tri-ryche guitar
giveaway and noticed something peculiar. The grand prize winner
also got a copy of the "Operation: Livecrime" box set, but the
photo of the set was interesting. The set was titled "Live
Operation: Mindcrime" as opposed to "Operation: Livecrime," the
artwork was different on the box, the CD, and the booklet, and
the label on the video was different as well.
I assume this was an even-more-limited release version
of the set, but am curious as to any information anyone else
        might have.
{I suspect it was a preliminary title and design,
since that issue predated the actual release of
                        Livecrime by a month or two.  -sh}

        RUSH & QUEENSRYCHE operator@sundc.east.sun.com (Kimberly)
As for Rush doing Queensryche covers and vice-versa, I
don't think I would be happier with anything else. My favorite
band is, of course, Queensryche, and my boyfriend's is Rush.
Unfortunately he won't even be in the same room with me if I
play Queensryche - we don't see very much of each other - so
that would be a great eye opener for him.

        BOSTON & QUEENSRYCHE crispen@foxy.boeing.com (Bob)
The thread on covering Rush reminded me of the
twin-guitars sound that's now one of Queensryche's trademarks,
and used to be one of Boston's. Queensryche's version of
'Don't Look Back' or 'Holly Ann' would probably be worth hearing.

        MOVIE MINDCRIME gallegos@arizona.edu (Paul)
About "Mindcrime: The Motion Picture," keep the person
who did Nikki in the videos. Probably better to have an unknown
in there than to try and grab a major star. Definitely Uma
Thurman as Mary, though. Dr. X? Either Malkovic or Rutger
        Hauer.
Who would do other songs on the soundtrack? After
reading the threads on SiD, I'd assume people wouldn't mind
hearing Rush do some tunes of their own, and maybe do a couple
of Queensryche's tunes as well. ;) Just keep the rap out of the
        movie, that's all I ask! :)

        SOUNDTRACK: MINDCRIME birchall@pilot.njin.net (Shag)
There are a couple ways I can see doing the soundtrack
and score for a "Movie: Mindcrime" type of thing.
One obvious option would be to structure the score around
the songs from the original album, letting the musical director -
Kamen's my pick - work them into instrumental or orchestral
background parts of the score, and release a soundtrack featuring
the songs performed with an orchestra. Of course, then the usual
accusations of copying Pink Floyd would fly - see the "Orchestral
        Dark Side..." album.
Another option would be to have the songs from the
original album performed by other groups, and release those
versions as the soundtrack. Of course, then the usual
accusations of copying Pink Floyd would fly - see the "Wall Live
        in Berlin" album.
Third, the movie could include both songs from both
original album and new songs by other bands, and the soundtrack
could just include the new songs - and a big note saying to go
get the original album if you didn't have it already.
Fourth, the movie could include both types of songs, and
the soundtrack could be a double-CD containing songs from the
original album - perhaps new, live, or orchestral versions - and
new songs from other bands, intermingled. It might be
interesting if the other bands wrote songs that filled cracks in
the "Mindcrime" storyline, or related things from different
        points of view.

        QUEENSRYCHE & SHADOWRUN ssarasin@nyx.cs.du.edu (Stephen)
Being both a Queensryche fan, and an avid ShadowRun fan,
I have run across many drawings dealing with the tri-ryche logo,
along with several excerpts from songs. You will find at least
one or two drawings and/or excerpts in just about every ShadowRun
sourcebook to date. I have also found that in several of the
modules, you will see song excerpts scribbled on walls and such
as graffiti, with the tri-ryche as a patch or emblem on the
        characters' jackets.
I think there is some form of connection. Either the
artist is an avid Queensryche fan, or it's just because both the
band and the FASA game are based in Seattle. Who knows.

        FUTURE CONCEPT ALBUMS ryche@delphi.com (Kevin)
I've heard a lot of rumors going around about the next
album. In a few interviews, the interviewers have asked the guys
about another concept album, maybe even a sequel to "Operation:
Mindcrime." Quite honestly I think that's a bad idea. In
general, sequels usually don't come out quite as well as the
first. As for another concept album in general, I think that
would be pretty neat, but not for the next album. Maybe for the
2nd or 3rd album after this next one.

        RAGE FOR ORDER operator@sundc.east.sun.com (Kimberly)
I was under the impression that the whole "storyline"
dilemma was resolved. Not only was it stated here, but about a
year ago, I went to a Queensryche concert in Colorado, and had
the privilege of being present for an interview with them. The
question of there being a story in "Rage" was brought up, and
Geoff Tate stated that even though there are a few similarities
in the songs, there was no connection between "Rage for Order"
and "Operation: Mindcrime." He actually chuckled when he said
        it.

        LONDON SOUND-ALIKE alanb1925@aol.com (Alan)
Here's something for everyone's "I did not know that!"
file. Paul DiAnno's band, Battlezone, come to town back in 1987
to support their "Children of Madness" album. Yes, the same
DiAnno from Iron Maiden. They played in a small club here which
was a great advantage for meeting the band. Paul and the rest of
the band came very early and hung out, shot pool and drank with
        everyone.
I was hanging out with Graham Bath, the guitar player,
and we got started talking about music and stuff and the
conversation lead to Queensryche. Graham told me that the song
'Metal Tears' on the Battlezone album sounded like 'London' and
that it was not by accident. The band were big fans of
Queensryche and really liked that song, so they came up with the
        plagiaristically inspired 'Metal Tears.'
