Hello again, everybody! This is the last issue of this
summer, which doesn't really mean anything, but I figured I'd
mention it for anybody who's celebrating an equinox...
A couple issues back, Squrille asked about people within
EMI to write to about getting "Live in Tokyo" re-issued. I got a
couple suggestions from folks at the company, so here you go:
                Jeff Panzer Ken Baumstein
                Production Senior VP of Marketing
EMI North America EMI North America
8730 Sunset Boulevard 1290 Avenue of the Americas
Los Angeles CA 90069 New York NY 10104
Either of those would have _some_ influence, with the V.P. having
more. Anybody who wants to write to 'em, go ahead!

There is going to be another Milwaukee Musicfest in
October. If anyone is interested, email me!

        Laserdiscs John <jfp@tardis.svsu.edu>
I haven't been able to find out anything about the
laserdiscs either. I've checked with the local Harmony House,
Camelot, and Suncoast Video stores, but none of them have any
information. Don't worry, I'll keep checking.
{I got some info - Pioneer released "Building
Empires" on September 8th. The list price is
34.95, the Pioneer club price is 31.46. This
                        info from the Pioneer club, 1-800-322-2285.  -sh}

        Release Date? Dave <dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu>
I have been hearing this rumor that the new album has
been scheduled for late October release. I dont think it's true,
but a guy said that one of the record stores had a date on it. I
am not going to believe that until I hear it from more people
though, I just wish it would hurry up and get here, I'm going
        crazy out here.
{EMI's publicity department says that it's not on
                        their list, which goes up to November.  -sh}

Real World on TV Darren <drd@gnu.ai.mit.edu>
I was watching the Dallas & Buffalo game September 12th,
and during halftime, caught a commercial for the tabloid show
Hard Copy. I don't particularly like the show, but the music
they had playing in the background was the beginning of 'Real
        World.'

        Prophecy Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
Today I was looking over my Queensryche EP on CD. I
noticed something very unusual. It said the song 'Prophecy' was
recorded during the "Rage for Order" sessions. But, isn't the
song on the video "Live in Japan?" And if I remember correctly,
"Live in Japan" was recorded before "The Warning" ever came out.
Hmmm. The only thing I could guess is that maybe they wrote the
song a long time ago, but never recorded it until the EP came out
on CD. Anybody know the story?
{You got it right, or at least very close. The
song was written, and performed, but the specific
recording of it that was included on the EP CD
                        was made during the "Rage" sessions.  -sh}

Rage for Order CD's Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
For the person who was wondering why the "Rage For Order"
poster didn't mention CD's, they didn't exist back when "Rage for
Order" was released - at least not for the metal-buying public.

        Hear N Aid / Archives Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
In a previous SiD, I mentioned I had a few "Hear N Aid"
videos for sale. Unfortunately, they are all gone now. I will
be checking back at the record store I bought them at to see if
they have any more. I will post a message here if and when I
        find any more.
Also, while I'm on the subject, Joyce left a few things
out of the archives worth mentioning. 1 - "Operation: Livecrime"
on cassette, she only listed the CD. 2 - "Hear N Aid (The
Sessions)" on BETA, she only listed the PAL format. Anyone else
        find anything else missing?
{I had some info that she didn't know about - a
catalog number, an article - so I sent it in.
She will be putting out updated editions of the
                        archives periodically.  -sh}

        Queensryche Stuff Dave <dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu>
I haven't picked up much in the way of Queensryche items
in a while, although I did finally get "Unplugged and Other
Stories." It's really good quality, so I was pleasantly
surprised. There is a huge record show coming to Austin next
weekend which I'm going to - it's supposed to have 250 tables, so
I'll hopefully stumble across some cool things. I'll keep a list
of all I find and some of the dealer's addresses in case someone
on the digest wants one of the items which I find.

Rage for Order Singles Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
I remember seeing a single of 'Rage for Order' (the song,
not the album title) with an unknown (to me) b-side. Of course,
back then I didn't buy it, 'cos I had no money.
{I don't remember a song called 'Rage for Order,'
or was that the one that became something on
                        "Mindcrime?"  -sh}

        Bootleg Updates Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
The "Tokyo 1983" and "Nightryders" (Tokyo 1985) bootlegs
are actually the same show. And this show is the same as the
        official video, "Live in Tokyo."
The bootleg from New York, 2/13/87 has the same set list
as the one from 2/14/87, but also has the final encore, "Take
        Hold of the Flame."
The Osaka Japan 1991 video has the same set list as the
Milan 12/6/90 show. Note that at this point in the tour they did
not have the 2 screens behind the stage.
{These changes, and many others, will be added to
the discography files on the FTP site when I have
                        some free days.  -sh}

        Evolution Calling Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
I just received the CD "Evolution Calling." I guess you
can call it the "Greatest Hits" of Queensryche, for it is a
collection of two or three songs from each one of their albums.
The CD comes packaged in one of those cardboard CD cases. There
are no photos of the band, just pictures of each one of their
albums. It only cost me $21, which I thought was kinda cheap
figuring that the CD was a rare one.

        _The_Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

        Bass Technique Todd <todd@mudbug.nrlssc.navy.mil>
The most obvious difference is the sound produced. When
picking, the hard, sharp surface of the pick excites more of the
upper harmonics, resulting in a clear, crisp attack and a more
treble sound overall. I assume that by "plucking" you are
referring to the standard fingerstyle method of playing; this,
due to the strings being excited by the flesh of the finger,
yields a darker, more muted attack. "Slapping" should not be
confused with "plucking"; the former is an altogether different
technique, in which the string is struck such that it actually
rebounds off of the fretboard, yielding a crisp "pop" on the
attack. It is a technique normally associated with "funk" and
similar musical styles, and should not be discussed in reference
        to Queensryche. :)
Another important difference is versatility. Most
players find that a particular passage will be easier to play
using one technique or the other. Conventional wisdom says that
for aggressive, driving lines, using a pick is helpful, while
fingerstyle playing affords greater sensitivity and expression.
A third point worth bringing up: It's almost impossible
to misplace one's fingers, or drop them while playing.

        Bass Technique Matt <mmora@unix.sri.com>
I don't think Eddie does anything but use a pick. He
might use his fingers too on some tracks but most of the stand
out bass parts sound like they're with a pick.
'Jet City Woman' is a good example of the "pick" sound.
I don't think Eddie has ever done slap/pluck stuff. For a good
example of that listen to Stu Hamm, Billy Shehan of Mr. Big or
John Myung in Dream Theater - there is a great example on
"Images and Words." I can't remember the song title, but it's a
        stand out bass part.

        Bass Technique Ryan <rcwillia@depauw.edu>
As far as bass goes, the pick tends to get a more
pronounced, ringing sound. The fingerstyle is lower and more
driving. It's just a case of tone color. Eddie is a master at
        both styles, it would seem.

        Guitar Technique Todd <eigenstr@cs.rose-hulman.edu>
Picking, slapping, and plucking all give different
sounds. The basic difference is in the attack/sustain - notes
that you pick have much higher attack (they build to max volume
much quicker) than those that you pluck. This gives a much
        clearer, crisper sound.
I just listened to 'Jet City Woman' and 'The Thin Line.'
Listen to the intros - the bass sound to 'Jet City Woman' is very
crisp (just the first few notes will tell you that), while the
intro to 'The Thin Line' is, by comparison, quite muddy. That's
        the difference picking makes.
Same goes for guitar, by the way. Listen to Jeff Beck
versus Steve Vai (ignore all of Steve's tapping).

        Bass Technique Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
It was quite odd - yesterday I received an e-mail
explanation, then I met the bass player for the band They Might
Be Giants. He came into the bookstore where I work, which is
right next door to the club that TMBG were playing, and he was
dragging his acoustic bass with him. I mentioned the message,
and he forgot about looking for books, and pulled out his bass
from the case and let me actually hear the difference between
        picking and fingerstyle.
Wow! I had no idea there was _that_ much of a difference
(even though common sense tells you this). We ended up chatting
for a while (he offered to get me into the show for free, but I
had homework to do) and after I mentioned Queensryche, he said
that he had a friend who did sound for the band on Building
Empires, whose last name began with an "R."

        Babble Correction Jeremy <apd@math.ufl.edu>
I picked up an error in the Queensryche lyrics on glia -
or rather, the babble. For the beginning of 'The Mission' the
lyrics state that William says, "Some of you are in a state of
failure right now." Today while listening to "Operation:
Livecrime," which is easier to understand, I definitely heard
"Some of you are in a state of _rebellion_ right now." If we can
assume they would use the same recordings in concert then this
        would be the correct translation.
{"Rebellion" is the correct word there. I'll
                        fix it in any incorrect FTP files.  -sh}

I have a copy of the "Evolution Calling" promo CD I'd
like to sell. The CD has 8 or 9 songs on it, nothing rare,
unreleased, or non-LP, and was released just before "Empire."
        Please e-mail me if interested.
