        _Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Hello again, everyone! This is the last September issue,
and - as some of the more ancient among us recall - October marks
the second birthday of this digest. The actual date is near the
end of the month, but I figured I'd warn you all ahead of time.
This particular issue is one of those "learn something
new every day" documents, and also contains a short survey aimed
at getting some statistical information together, in hopes of
persuading EMI to re-release the "Live in Tokyo" video in the US.
(Please do respond to the survey, and mail it to the right
address, since I don't want to be forwarding the responses! ;)
Anyway, enough of me. On with the digest.

Scott on New-Age Album Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
Scott is the drummer on a new age album by David Lanz and
Paul Speer which was just released. It's worth picking up just
for that. Great music to study to.
                        {Anyone know more about this one?  -sh}

Live in Tokyo Survey Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
In order to strengthen the case to re-issue the
"Queensryche Live in Tokyo" video, it will be helpful to have
statistics - even if they do come from a very small population,
i.e. SiD readers. This will show that there is or is not a
market for the sale of a re-issued "Live in Tokyo" video. Please
take the time to mail me your answers to the following questions
(this will also help me with my statistics class this semester).
E-mail me directly at c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu. Please do
this as soon as possible. When the numbers are in, they will be
addressed to Ken Baumstein, the Senior Vice President for
Marketing, EMI North America - Ken Baumstein.
#1 Do you have a copy of the "Queensryche Live in Tokyo"
                    video?
                        a) is it a bootleg or an "official" release?
#2 If you do not have a copy of "Live in Tokyo," would
you like to have a copy?
#3 If you have had a copy in the past, but no longer
                    have it, why?
                        a) lost
                        b) stolen
                        c) sold it
                        d) damaged
                        e) other (please explain)
#4 If you answered question #3, would you like another
                    copy?
#5 Are you male or female?
I hope there is a good response for this. It would be
_very_ nice to be able to shove a bunch of numbers in an EMI
executive's face to prove the point that they should re-issue the
video. Power to the people! The consumer is always right!

        _Speak______________________________________Comments_&_Questions_

        NM 156 Meaning Michael <csc3mad@cabell.vcu.edu>
What exactly does NM156 mean? Does it actually represent
the value for end of line? I would assume its ASCII for end of
line, but I thought that was chr$(13) - which is, incidentally,
carriage return. If anyone could clarify the actual meaning of
the song, I would be thankful.
                        {It's just a number.  Really.  -sh}

        Rockumentary? Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
I heard that MTV (or someone) has done a Rockumentary or
a Past, Present and Future on Queensryche. What's the deal? Is
this really true? If it is, then MTV _really_ needs to do some
serious work on their show promos. What is the date on this?
Another person said he has seen it, but I kind of doubt his word.

        Mindcrime Tom <turnert6428@cobra.uni.edu>
It's very strange, but I hadn't listened to "Livecrime"
for about two months. It had been a couple months before
"Livecrime" came out since I listened to "Mindcrime." Suddenly,
I found myself popping the "Mindcrime" CD in my player and
putting on my headphones, laying back and listening to it. This
may sound crazy, but I had this "feeling" that I was listening to
it for the first time. I was absorbing every note, every word.
I swear I heard things that I hadn't heard the (at least) five
hundred times before. It was incredible. It is a very rare and
special album that can still bring this kind of sensation to you
after years of listening to it.
                        {Ah!  The mind-control is working!  -sh}

        Real World Single John <larocqu@gaul.csd.uwo.ca>
I saw a cassette single of 'Real World' with 'Last Time
in Paris' on the B-side. Still looking for a CD of that single
or the Last Action Hero soundtrack - I'm not paying $15 for 1
song. I'll wait for a used copy.

        Video Formats Greg <glewis@maths.adelaide.edu.au>
Beta and PAL are two different things - it's like
comparing apples and oranges. Video cassettes come in a variety
of formats, one of the choices you can make is between beta and
VHS (although VHS has I believe become the dominant format now).
Beta cassettes are smaller, and naturally require a different
VCR. On the other hand, PAL refers to a television system, e.g.
Australia uses the PAL (Phase Alteration by Line) format for
broadcasting (and hence recording) TV programs, America on the
other hand uses the NTSC format (this is why you can't play an
American video on an Australian VCR).
What I'm saying is that beta is something that depends
entirely on just the VCR - it has nothing to do with the signal,
whereas PAL is the format in which TV signals are sent around.
E.g. I can buy a beta VCR in Australia (although I wouldn't want
to ;) and then buy beta tapes for it, or I could buy a VHS VCR
and VHS tapes. But I can't buy NTSC format tapes as the TV
won't understand the signal, whereas PAL ones will work fine out
here, but won't work in the US. Just wanted to straighten this
        out.

        Prophecy Versions Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
Before the EP was re-released on CD, there was another
studio version of 'Prophecy' put out by the band. It appeared on
the soundtrack to "The Decline of Western Civilization II: The
Metal Years," although QR was not actually one of the bands
        featured in the film.
{Okay... was _that_ different version the same as
the different version included on the Japanese CD
                        of the EP?  Anyone know?  -sh}

Rage for Order Single Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
I am sure however that in a pre-"Rage for Order" release
the guys were talking about which songs should be on the album,
and that one of the songs that surely should make it to the album
was 'Rage for Order.' From what they said about what the song
was about it suggests that it could have been a song like
        'Revolution Calling.'

Rage for Order Single Steve <smm@uunet.uu.net>
I have a bootleg in which they play a song called 'Rage,'
which became 'Anarchy-X.' The only difference is on the older
version, they would actually shout "Rage!" occasionally in the
        song.

Rage for Order Single Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
To clarify Shag's comment about the song played on the
"Rage" tour that wound up on "Mindcrime": On the tour they ended
the guitar solo segment of their show with a brief instrumental
they introduced as 'Rage.' This was what wound up on "Mindcrime"
        as 'Anarchy-X.'

Rage for Order Single Oliver <olsam@bnr.ca>
I have a copy of the song 'Rage for Order.' A friend of
mine works at the Library of Congress in the department where all
of the tapes are kept that bands send in for copyrighting. I
have copies of the "Warning" demo tapes that the band used to get
signed to EMI with their already released EP. (I think that's how
it worked.) And I have the demos for the "Rage" sessions. The
intro to 'Rage for Order' later became known as 'Anarchy X.' I
guess the rest of the song was scrapped. There's only one or
two songs that don't appear on any albums. And one of the songs
(the particular one escapes me at the moment) was copyrighted
originally under the name of 'Ballad in Bm.'
I can find out the specifics of what are on these tapes
if people would like. It's been a couple of months since I've
listened to them. I also happen to have the original G'n'R demos
done for Geffen. Absolutely hysterical. It's amazing what a
        good producer can do.

        Bass Technique Michael <71203.3457@compuserve.com>
Eddie is very underrated, no question about it. Not to
nag or nitpick, but John Myung of Dream Theater doesn't slap the
part in 'Metropolis' that was referred to in the last digest.
It's all very complex 8-finger tapping along the lines of Stu,
        Sheehan, and Michael Mannring.

        Bass Technique Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
Last tour I noticed that Eddie mainly used a pick, but he
did play with his fingers a little bit. If you have the "Live in
Tokyo" video, you can see him doing the intro to 'Nightrider' and
        he's playing with his fingers.

        Soundbite Origin Michael <csc3mad@cabell.vcu.edu>
While watching television the other night I stumbled upon
the movie Helter Skelter, which is about Charles Manson. I
watched it for a while then heard one of the girls in the film
scream something I _knew_ I had heard before. I went through all
my Queensryche albums and found it on "Rage for Order." The
words "Kill us all, kill us all!" at the end of 'The Whisper'
were taken exactly from the movie. Very tasty bit of trivia for
        you.

I would really like to get a copy of this. I'm in Toronto,

I don't know if anyone out there is into Tool. I saw
them recently and the show was intense. Maynard James Keenan
(the vocalist) created an atmosphere on stage that I've never
        witnessed.
Check out their second album entitled "Undertow." If you
listen carefully you might catch a slight influence from
Queensryche and Judas Priest. The end of the track "Flood" is
quite reminiscent of 'Blinded' - the "Voices are calling you,
calling you..." part. For those Priest fans out there like might
you might remember 'Victim of Changes.' You'll hear it there as
        well.
I think Tool is going on tour with Porno for Pyros, check
them out if you find the time. Also, if you're out in Salt Lake
check out my band - Scream Cheese, for a low-calorie,
        non-saturated fat show.

I recently chatted with Alper Ince, the lead guitarist of
Frustration, a progressive power-metal band from Ankara, Turkey.
Influenced by Queensryche, Dream Theater, Yes, Marillion, Fates
Warning, and ELP, the band has been together for three years,
and has a repertoire of 12 original tunes and a cover of
'Empire.' The other members are rhythm guitarist Mehmet Pozam,
bassist Fatih Zorcan, drummer Alper Ercan, and vocalist Dinc
Tuncel, who sings in English. They've got a demo tape out
called "Demo-Cracy," which is available for 1,500,000 Turkish
Lira. If you want to contact the band, write to:
