        New Album? Sam <shulick@navajo.ucs.indiana.edu>
I haven't been keeping up with the newsletter (school and
all), but when is the new Queensryche album due out? I last
heard that it would be on the market in December. Has anyone
heard any previews of it? How does it compare to "Operation:
        Mindcrime" and "Empire?" Thanks!
{Hopefully it'll be out in the first half of next
                        year, and we really don't know much else.  -sh}

        New Album Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
While at the grocery store to purchase a couple of six
packs of Jolt cola (papers due), of course I hit the magazine
rack. Paging through one of the metal rags, (I think it was Hit
Parader), they mentioned the Ryche in a humorous Picks of 1994:
Queensryche is writing a short history of the universe in a
loosely organized concept album, lasting nine hours. I had to
        snicker at that one!
                        {That'd explain why it's taking so long!  -sh}

        Album Release Jason <cavalier@shadow.net>
Interesting, interesting, interesting! On one hand
someone's heard that Queensryche booked time at a studio in
Seattle for next spring, another heard from this "babe" that she
just shot a video for them. Hmm, which to believe? While I hope
it's not the first one, it has a lot more credibility. As far as
that babe goes, Brian, I think you better go find her and ask
what drugs she takes (asking where you can buy them is of course
optional). I haven't seen a Rush video in the past 6 years that
had any sort of "babe" in it, especially not anything that young.
The new video from "Counterparts" has no babe in it, anyway.
As far as recording in spring, goes, :( - but it would
make more sense. This does _not_ mean, mind you, that they could
be starting the record new - it could just be advance preparation
for finishing up a few things, advance preparation (let's say
they're in another studio and the studio comes to them and says
"We're really sorry but we had so-and-so booked to do here in the
spring," etc) in case the studio they were using drops - etc.
While it's not exactly an everyday occurrence, musicians
sometimes _do_ use numerous studios in numerous places - let's
        just hope for the best.

        New Album's Chances Jorge <15062998R@servax.fiu.edu>
As to everyone's worries about Queensryche being affected
in any way by the decline suffered from other groups, take it
easy! The reason other groups' last albums didn't sell was
because they weren't any good (Winger, Poison, Billy Idol) or had
no record company support and group turmoil (Warrant). Besides,
why are we comparing Queensryche to any of these guys anyway?
"Progressive metal" hasn't been affected by the downfall of other
hard rock subgenres, as the success of Dream Theater showed. The
new Queensryche album, whenever it comes out, will do just fine!

        Commercialism Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
About the new album--I've thought about the fine
commercial line the band has to walk now. With wonderful success
with "Empire," boo's and hisses from other bands and fans about
"going commercial" (what a lame phrase and concept), and the need
or desire to "not drop the ball" (for all you football fans), I
wouldn't be surprised if they are being very careful about what
they do. Personally, I just hope that they keep doing backing
vocals with the entire band and not have Geoff just overdub and
        overdub.

        Truck Commercial? Sonny <quintans@ccmail.us.dell.com>
I saw - or rather, I _heard_ - something really strange
the other night on t.v. There was a commercial on, for the
Texas Ford Truck dealers. I could swear that the music in the
background was 'Deliverance,' and I don't mean the dueling banjos
thing from the movie by the same name. Who knows, maybe this is
a trend. Maybe in the future, we'll see Nike commercials
playing 'Walk in the Shadows' or something.

        Geoff Playing Guitar Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
I too have a live video on which, during 'Neue Regel,'
Geoff comes on stage with a guitar and plays it for part of the
song. Although I've never seen him play guitar on any other song
or seen him credited with guitar work on any album, I would guess
that he really does not play this instrument but rather learned a
few riffs to carry this song live.
Also, on this same video, from the "Rage" tour, at the
end Geoff introduces a hidden keyboard player, who comes out
dressed in that same kind of sci-fi transsexual looking garb.
Then all six of them proceed to take the final bows. Has
Queensryche used an offstage musician on any other tours? By the
way, this was the arena tour, this guy is not mentioned or
introduced on any tapes I have of the club headline "Rage" tour.
{I'm not personally aware of them using offstage
musicians in more recent tours - unless you count
                        whoever triggers all the samples.  -sh}

        Lanz & Scott Igor <igor_sinyak@ccm.hf.intel.com>
I had heard a couple songs by Lanz before which I liked.
I was actually surprised at how many other metal fans on this
list could provide information about such new age music. Anyway,
I had found that they were playing in Seattle on Nov 19 (day
after my birthday :-) and I had a business trip to Portland that
day, so it seemed natural to go catch the show. I found "Bridge
of Dreams" in Tower's "Ambient" section, popped it into my rented
Mustang, and I was off to my 3 hour tour to Seattle. Well get
this - at the show, Lanz introduced Scott Rockenfield! He took
over drums for two of the songs - just like he did on the album.
It was nothing too fancy, though he had a mini-solo, but it was
great having him there. He got a very big welcome and applause.
He wore jeans and a T-shirt, a contrast to the other well dressed
band members :-) I kept looking out for more of Queensryche, I
know they like new age, but to no avail. Overall, I enjoyed the
        concert. Any other 'Rychers there?

        Live in Tokyo John <larocqu@gaul.csd.uwo.ca>
I got it! I got it! Live in Tokyo at last! Got it used
at the local used book shop here (lots of videos) for an
incredible $5! The *original* Sony Video LP version of the VHS
cassette. What a bargain. I notice that Geoff is wearing that
annoying black leather outfit that he also wore (without any
shirt on) in the 'Anybody Listening' video, in one part of the
        show.

        Real World John <larocqu@gaul.csd.uwo.ca>
Finally got a copy of 'Real World' off of a used "Last
Action Hero" CD. What a disappointment. I kept hearing the
last minute or so of this song on a local station and got
excited, and then I heard the first half. What a let down. One
'Silent Lucidity' is enough for me.

        Reviewers Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
I've got a huge beef with reviewers. Why would anyone
give any kind of credibility to a newspaper music reviewer?
Concerts and album releases should be reviewed by individuals
familiar with a band's history and previous works, not to mention
having attended more than one show. That way the review has
something to compare the current work/show to. Specifically, in
response to the article posted by Al, does this reviewer _know_
anything about the band? Obviously not, because then he would
know that a two-guitar attack is an integral part of the band's
music (I have a stack of guitar magazines at home to document
this). And what's wrong with a little effort on stage? After
all, it is their job. In RIP Magazine, April 1992, page 35 (yes,
it came off of my floor, and yes, I'm in the middle of writing
papers), Geoff stated: "People pay good money to see me perform
and I owe it to them and myself to be prepared, and to do an
incredible show every night." _And_ in K.J. Doughton's
"Metallica Unbound" (page 161), James Hetfield stated the
following about Queensryche (then in support of the Justice
tour): "It was difficult for them to be in front of our crowd,
'cause they're a bit lighter... But they would come out every
night and give 110 percent." Granted, repetitive performances
can become detrimental to the band's performance, but as long as
the rendition is done well, who cares if they do everything the
same way? Look at the stresses on their lives. If they need to
follow a set routine in order to keep from coming apart at the
seams, then let 'em. Now, if you're on your 10th show of
whatever tour, and you're getting bored with everything being the
same, then give your ticket to someone who _really_ wants to see
them (like me). When I saw them at Kansas State University, they
were on the last leg of Building Empires (late Nov '91), and they
were damn good, even though there were maybe 4,000 people there.
Just like I told all of my swimmers, "finish hard, all the way to
the wall." And that's my impression of a band that's "trying too
hard." Sounds like a load of crap to me. Everyone has to form
their own opinions. Tirade over, time to go back to my paper.

        Reviewers Jason <cavalier@shadow.net>
Like Shag said, mainstream music reviewers do just that -
review in a "mainstream" style. Here in Miami, I can make pretty
good guesses about rock/metal bands I've never heard of before
(we have a large local metal band population) judging on whether
the "rock music" reviewer for the Miami Herald hated it or not.
If he hated it, it's usually an excellent tape, if he liked it
the reverse is true. The only reviews I trust are from SiD. :)

In reply to last issue's comment about Chris and Ted
Nugent being separated at birth: If I were to think anyone was
Chris DeGarmo's long lost twin I would say it was Jamie Lee
        Curtis.

Since Nancy and others are on the topic of look-a-likes:
Guitarist Ottmar Liebert bears a damn close resemblance to Geoff.
Check out his video for 'Snake Charmer.' I did a double take.

        Damn The Machine? Jorge <15062998R@servax.fiu.edu>
Can anybody tell me about Damn The Machine? I've read a
lot of stuff about them but never heard them. I know Chris
Poland is in them. Is their album any good? What's it really
like? Critics never have a clue.

        Crimson Glory Jake <v066ll6m@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu>
In response to the question about Crimson Glory, I read
that they were dropped from their label, signed to another and
changed their name to Zen. Not surprising, considering how Led
Zepplinish they sounded on their last album, "Strange and
Beautiful." They had 2 new members on that album, I don't know
about since then. It's too bad they changed their style so
drastically, their first 2 albums were incredible. I would like
to know what happened to the original drummer, he was good!
