Greetings once again, and a happy holiday season to all.
Rich's question about the 'Halloween' song was answered by many
people, so I've summarized the answers. Other than that, this
issue contains a mix of information, speculation, diatribe, and
more questions, so I'll be quiet and let you read them.

        New Album? Michael <mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu>
Hi everyone. I was just reading some of the newsnet
boards when I ran into a post saying that "the new album is
already in "the can", but because of some legal hassles with the
film studio who brought us that Mega-Hit, The Last Action Hero,
        it's encountered some delays."
Does anyone know of any truth to this? From my
understanding, they have not you begun to record the CD.

        New Album's Odds Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
About the possible success of the next Queensryche album,
maybe it's just me, but I have a hunch it's going to be
absolutely _huge_! Like I've said before, progressive metal is
succeeding now. Dream Theater was a hell of a lot more
successful than other metal groups this year, and you should've
seen how many people bought the 'Real World' single where I work!
Bands with staying power are still thriving - Aerosmith,
Metallica - and Queensryche definitely has staying power. The
market is less cluttered also. Trust me. It will be big.

        Offstage Musicians Don <zzthom@acc.wuacc.edu>
At the risk of sounding too purist, I was disturbed to
learn that an offstage keyboardist was used during the Rage tour.
I know many bands are said to employ this tactic live, but I just
find it dishonest. Put the keys in a remote section of the stage
or something, but let's see everyone who's playing, dammit.
Might as well have a tape machine running offstage. Have the
'Ryche used offstage musicians since the Rage tour?

        Tablature? Jamey <jcs1174@ritvax.isc.rit.edu>
Hello to all the 'Rychers around the world. I have a
question for all the guitar/bass players out there. I need the
tab, or the name of a site where I can get it, to any (if not
        all) of Queensryche's stuff.
I'm especially interested in the tab for the following
songs - 'The Lady Wore Black,' 'The Prophecy,' 'Gonna Get Close
to You,' 'NM 156,' 'No Sanctuary,' 'I Dream in Infrared' - and
        the complete "Mindcrime" album.
I'm hoping to convince the guys in my band to try a few
of these. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

        Columbia House Heather <hmb@vax1.mankato.msus.edu>
I noticed Tony was wondering what the order numbers for
Queensryche CD's via Columbia House. Unfortunately Columbia
House does not carry Queensryche anymore. I chose to join their
CD club because they had Queensryche albums listed in some of
their membership ads but when I tried to order them on my
enrollment I was told they no longer carry them. I guess we're
just going to have to go out and buy them the normal way instead
        of 8 for a penny. =)

        CD Availability Info Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
If anybody needs info on whether a CD is available or
not, I work for a very good record store. We don't have much in
terms of imports, and we don't carry bootlegs or promo CD's, but
we have access to pretty much anything that is in print and can
get it. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions on anything.
I read that someone wants a copy of "Transcendence" by Crimson
Glory. I think we have one in stock, and I could probably get it
with my employee discount and mail it to them.

        Real World John <larocqu@gaul.csd.uwo.ca>
'Real World' was an awesome addition to the movie.
That's the scene where Arnie arrives in New York and you hear
all those screaming Queensryche guitars. I must admit, like some
of the Empire tracks, that introspective stuff takes a while to
grow on me. I don't remember Geoff singing at all in the movie's
soundtrack, only instrumentals, by the way. My disappointment
was that the song was not longer and the first half vocals
sounded too much like 'Silent Lucidity.' I am getting used to
the track and like it more than when I first wrote my post.

        Hair and Stereotypes Julie <dowdyjm@ucbeh.san.uc.edu>
I read something in one of the Cincinnati newspapers a
few days ago that really pissed me off. It was about a juvenile
court judge in Texas, I may be wrong, that was reducing sentences
if the kids cut their hair. For instance, one kid had about a
$483 fine and if he agreed to chop his hair, it would be reduced
to 80 hours of community service. So the kid did and I don't
blame him, I know that if I ever got in trouble, I'd be up the
creek without a paddle and the $483 bucks! I still think this
        stinks though.
I don't have a problem with people who have short hair
and are headbangers. I grew out of the mentality that
headbangers had to have long hair, dress in all black and have
tattoos a long time ago. Some of the coolest guys in metal have
short hair, or as the trend is going, _no_ hair. My problem is
with "the system." This judge said he did this because he was
trying to get these youths "out of a subculture and back into
main society." You know, how g*ddamn stupid! That really
offends me! I work my ass off at this college, sometimes not as
hard as I should, and I'm an honest, trustworthy person but
because I like guys with long hair and listen to Ozzy Osbourne,
that makes me bad? That puts me into a "subculture?" It's
people like him that think all of us are bad, that we're all drug
addicts and we've all got the brains of bricks!
Who is this man to say that because someone has long
hair, they are not accepted into society? He obviously does not
have a foot in the real world. I think this man should come down
to my campus and meet my friend Jim, who has hair about the
length of Michael Inez and is a Computer Science major. Okay,
        I'm done bitching.
{On the subject of stereotyping, Queensryche fans
                        have historically been rather non-stereotypical.
I'm personally aware of about a 35-year age range
and there are people in all walks of life. As
for hair length, anything goes - mine's longer
                        than anybody's in the band.  -sh}

Does anyone know where the original version of this track
can be found? What album did it appear on, year, etc. Or does
anyone have a copy they'd be willing to dub for me?

        Dal Bello John <larocqu@gaul.csd.uwo.ca>
Other musicians have done covers of Dal Bello's songs.
One of the more powerful songs off of Heart's "Bad Animals" is
'Where are You, Wait for an Answer.' Dal Bello has another cover
on the latest Heart album as well. Dal Bello did an extremely
strange video for 'Gonna Get Close to You,' which included a
        piano on its side.

        Halloween - Summary Editor <birchall@pilot.njin.net>
In the last issue, Rich asked about a song called
'Halloween' by a speed-metal group with vocals that sounded like
Geoff Tate. There were _twenty_ responses to this question, so
rather than reprinting all of them, I'll summarize. Thanks go to
Stephen, Gerhard, Darren, Marcus, Michael, Bobby, Dan, Jeffrey,
Igor, Paul, Tim, Tom, Allen, Meem, Wei Hao, Rob, Chris, Charles,
Charlie, and John for providing the information!
'Halloween' is by the German band Helloween, from their
album "Keeper of the Seven Keys - Part I" which was released in
1987, on the Noise label in Europe. Their current vocalist,
Michael Kiske, has a range and technique similar to Geoff's. The
full-length version of 'Halloween' runs about 12 or 14 minutes.
A radio edit a few minutes long is more likely to be heard, and a
video is occasionally seen on MTV, on Headbanger's Ball or the
"Meet God" episode of "Beavis & Butthead."
Helloween's first album, "Walls of Jericho" was noted for
great cover art, good vocals and bad production, though the track
'How Many Tears' is a great trash metal song. At that point, Kai
Hansen was vocalist and guitarist, but after Kiske joined, he
concentrated on guitar work. In 1988, Helloween was the opening
act for the Donington Monsters of Rock festival.
With that lineup, Helloween released "Keeper of the Seven
Keys - Part II" and the live EP "I Want Out." After Kai Hansen
left to form his own band, Gamma Ray, Helloween released "Pink
Bubbles Go Ape" and "Chameleon." There were some rumors about
Michael Kiske replacing Rob Halford in Judas Priest or Bruce
Dickenson in Iron Maiden, but neither of these has happened.
Overall, Halloween's sound is similar to Iron Maiden or
old Queensryche, but their style tends more toward a blend of
progressive metal and melodic speed metal. The "Keeper" set and
"I Want Out" are recommended for those who are curious, and for
those are wondering why they haven't heard more about Helloween
on "alt.rock-n-roll.metal.progressive" (hi, John!), it's pretty
apparent that there are enough fans here alone to start a good
discussion on the newsgroup, so go for it!

Next week I may be going home for Christmas, but I'm not
really sure when, or if, or anything. Regardless, I will try to
get SiD out (from Iowa, or from New Jersey, or something) on the
usual schedule. Again, if your account is going away for break,
remember to let me know, so I don't keep sending this.
