        _Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Greetings once again! For those of you who've got the
day off for the observance of Martin Luther King Day - or Ben
Franklin's birthday, or my mom's birthday, though I don't know
why you'd get the day off for that - enjoy your break.
So far, there have not been many responses to my question
of whether I should do another run of "Screaming in Digital"
T-shirts. If the response level is still low by the end of
February, I'll probably put it off until the fall semester.
                On with the issue, enjoy!

        New Album Dave <dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu>
In the new Hit Parader, there is a snippet on the new
'Ryche album. It says they are currently recording at some
secret studio and expect the album to be out in summer with a
massive world tour following. It also said that someone who has
heard the new material says the hard stuff is harder than
anything they have ever done and the lighter stuff is more
"ethereal" than anything they have ever done. It's gonna be very
        diverse.
                        {Sounds like it might live up to our hopes!  -sh}

        Best of Queensryche William <dhaller@umich.edu>
I was thinking about what I personally would put on a
Queensryche "best of" release - perhaps entitled "Best They Can?"
Then I wondered what everyone here thought.
Here's the deal: anyone that wants to can e-mail me with
their top 5 songs, ranked 1-5. Points will go as follows: 10:1,
8:2, 6:3, 4:4, 2:5. The top 12 or so songs will be on the final
list, which I'll post here. "Piggyback" songs can be attached to
a song, so as not to split them up - such as 'Anarchy-X' to the
beginning of 'Revolution Calling.' Drop me a line with your
        lists!
{Great! We haven't had a best songs poll on SiD
                        in a couple years.  -sh}

For whoever was asking about the "completeness" of their
b-side collection, one I noticed missing was the import (non-US)
'Jet City Woman' CD-single - I don't know about vinyl - which has
live versions of 'Walk in the Shadows' and 'Empire,' unlike the
US one which has 'Prophecy' instead of 'Empire'. Also, the
import 12" and CD single of 'Silent Lucidity' have live versions
of 'The Mission' and 'Eyes of a Stranger.'

        Tablature Kevin <kholcom@v44e1.orl.mmc.com>
If anyone has any guitar transcriptions to trade, then
let me know! I have many songs that I have either transcribed
myself or have tablature too, I am looking for mostly "Rage" and
"Warning" songs but also a few from "Mindcrime."
{For those who type up textfiles of tablature,
the SiD FTP site could always use some more. The
                        address is glia.biostr.washington.edu, and the
                        upload directory is /pub/queensryche/incoming.
The tablatures that have already been uploaded
                        are available in /pub/queensryche/files/tablature
and also on ftp.uwp.edu, the "mirror" site, in
                        /pub/music/lists/queensryche/tablature.  -sh}

        Bootleg Video Ryan <rfkmieci@mtu.edu>
About that 'Ryche video shot by pros at the Palace of
Auburn Hills, Michigan, on Nov 8, 1991 I would like to say that I
went to that concert and it was quite excellent and if anyone was
thinking about getting a copy, I just wanted to let them know
that it was a great concert and probably almost worth the chunk
of change that Stephen said they were asking.

        Bootleg Video Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
Well, I got a flood of mail asking for the address of
that catalogue that had the video in it - I sent that
individually as I think the guy is a rip-off & a total bonehead,
and won't give him the publicity here. I also found someone who
has a copy and I shall have a copy by the end of the month,
hopefully. I'll post when I get it, so please don't write and
ask me to reply when I get it - I'll lose your addresses. Some
info on it for anyone else who may try to buy one: It is missing
the last song and a half.
                        {Did concert security tackle the cameraman?  -sh}

        _The_Killing_Words________________________________Interpretation_

        The Killing Words Eddie <edju@chaph.usc.edu>
I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the
first line that everyone has a different version of that I hear
is, "Now the part I see, my head is ringing."
Even though it sounded very much like "Now the wireless
in my hand is ringing" and makes more sense, I don't think that
was what Geoff wrote since wireless telephones were not _that_
popular - in fact, did they exist? - back in or before 1986.
God, I can't blieve this album's 8 years old already...
still sounds better than "Empire," especially the songwriting.

        The Killing Words Clive <c.mccaig@queens-belfast.ac.uk>
Somehow I seem to come up with the following lyrics:
Now the chord within my head is ringing
The distance of our lives keeps spreading
The pounding, I hear my heart, I'm not listening
Your voice from far away is screaming... It's over.
        What do you all think?

        The Killing Words Barry <barry@isscad.com>
Being a 'Ryche fan, I felt I couldn't stand on the side
lines while these dilemma went unsolved. I agree with most of
what has been written, but don't agree with the "heart" thing.
Now the chorus in my head is ringing
The distance of our lives keeps spreading
The pounding of my hand, I'm not listening
Your voice from far away is screaming...
I distinctly hear the word "hand", more so than "chorus" for that
matter. This is my $0.02 worth, although I could be wrong.

        The Killing Words Erik <erik@clark.net>
Obviously, I have no life. Here's my interpretation of
        the first line:
Now the violence in my head displayed.
How did I come to such a different conclusion than
everyone else? Well, the "d" in "head" is pronounced like the
first "d" of a word, not the last. If you listen to the rest of
the album, you can barely make out "d"s at the end of words
unless they are the last word before a pause.
Now, "violence" is a stretch here, I'll admit. It does
sound like "waters", but that makes no sense. If you agreed
with my last post a few months ago which described the story that
the whole album is telling, it even makes more sense. You know
that this guy is a half-willing participant in the revolution (at
the beginning, and an unwilling participant by the end of the
album), and is involved in killing people (although the "Killing"
in the title of this song doesn't mean actually killing, of
course). Blood-red stains on velvet throats at night, and all
        that.
Of course, most of you thought I was being silly when I
tried to prove "Rage" was a concept album, but you will come
around. You will learn that all the why's in your life are under
my control. I will try to tell you all I can. Before the light
you will know what lies behind my screams! (Sorry, got a little
        carried away.)
                        {Here, Erik, have a nice Prozac milkshake.  -sh}

        Misinterpretation Kevin <kholcom@v44e1.orl.mmc.com>
I am glad that I am not the only one with the Queensryche
lyric problems! It seems there is a lot of vagueness with their
music, maybe it intentionally leaves it open for interpretation?
I was watching an interview with Michael and Chris one time
talking about how the Queensryche EP was released in Japan and
the Japanese distributors or whatever decided to transcribe the
lyrics for the album jacket. The verse after the solo, "Over and
over, dreams of dying fill your head," was transcribed as "Over
and over, twigs are flying through your hair," and they also
mentioned something about brandishing sticks and stuff.
The sad part is I thought Geoff was saying something
about twigs in the hair, too! It took a transcription in Guitar
for the Practicing Musician to tell me what the actual lyrics
were. But I have been listening to the albums for so long that
I am sure I will continue to sing the wrong lyrics, but I will
        still love them!
{Actually, the Japanese CD of the EP _still_ has
                        those misinterpreted lyrics with it.  -sh}

        Livecrime Bo <bn@okcforum.osrhe.edu>
On the subject of "Livecrime," I was wondering whatever
happened to the notion of the box being "limited edition." I
remember the guys talking about it to Rikki Rachtman when they
played Donington, and they were saying it was gonna be only a
limited run type of deal. Of course, I hurried out, and got it
the first week it came out, but here we are a couple of years
later, and I still see it in stores. Anyone know what the deal
        is?
{I believe the copies you see are left over from
the original release, and that it is - at least
in the US - "out of print," but there are a lot
of copies still in stock due to its not selling
as well as expected initially. As to the videos
that are being sold unboxed in the UK, I've got
                        no idea.  -sh}

Actually when I met Eddie, he was the nicest person. I
didn't get to talk to him for too long, maybe 10 minutes or so,
but I guess you could say he is quite funny and it wouldn't
surprise me if he was called Comic Relief. Then again Geoff and
Scott were pretty funny too, but Geoff was acting a little
different - I guess he was still in that "Nikki" mode, because
he seemed more like Nikki than a singer for a really cool band.
I met the guys in November 1991 when they came to Baltimore
Arena. And if i remember correctly, it was Eddie and Scott who
hung out and did the Metal Shop interviews back in 1991-1992.
But I haven't heard much about any of Queensryche being
        interviewed except on eMpTyV.

release glossy which is autographed by all 5 guys for sale. The
signatures are genuine - I've seen them myself. Anyone who might

Another Queensrych-esque band everyone might want to
check out is Savatage. Their album "Edge of Thorns" is great.

        Related Bands Bo <bn@okcforum.osrhe.edu>
I'll give my thumbs up to Savatage. Their "Edge of
Thorns" release reminds me strongly of the early 'Ryche from the
EP and "Warning" era. The singer doesn't have nearly the same
range as Geoff does, but he can still sing pretty well, and the
melodies and guitar work are very good also. I think these guys
could go far with some good management.
{Fans of Savatage who are just joining in should
check the FTP site for back issues also, they've
                        been mentioned frequently over the years.  -sh}

        The Company Brian <brian@corp.bnf.com>
TheCompany@Aol.Com is a Fish/Marillion fan. The name for
the AOL account was taking from the Fish song 'The Company.' At
least this is what he told me when I emailed him asking him if he
was affiliated with The Company North America, the official North
        American fanclub for Fish.

        The Company <thecompany@aol.com>
Sorry, but I have no affiliation to anyone but me. I use
the handle as just that, a handle. It has Marillion connotations
as their fan club is named that.

        Ray Gillen Tina <tina.briones@ebay.sun.com>
Has anyone heard if it's true or not? This is very
depressing, he has an awesome voice. This is not a good way to
        start the new year.

        Ray Gillen Lou <spinal@bcvax1.bc.edu>
On the subject of Ray Gillen, WSOU in New Jersey
reported that he had indeed died, of what I don't know, but they
        say he's dead.

        Ray Gillen Linda <lindamo@rex.west.sun.com>
Hi. Unfortunately Ray Gillen did die several weeks ago,
from a bronchial infection that could have been labeled
        pneumonia.

        Ray Gillen <thecompany@aol.com>
As for Ray Gillen, yes, it's true. He died Thanksgiving
weekend. It was _not_ AIDS but a flu or pneumonia type infection
that just got the best of him. He will be missed.

        Ray Gillen Clive <c.mccaig@queens-belfast.ac.uk>
I can confirm, at least from what I've read in the press,
that Ray Gillen died in a hospital on Dec 1st 1993, from
illnesses relating to the AIDS virus - fitting he should die on
        World AIDS Day.
He had just completed a new album, with a new band, sorry
can't remember the exact name off hand, but I've heard it's
unlikely to be released due to Gillen's untimely death.
{For those who're wondering, Ray was the former
vocalist of Badlands, and had been mentioned in
this digest as a possible replacement should
Geoff ever step down as vocalist. I'd ask that
