Greetings, and welcome to April! I might be on the road
the next few weeks, but I'll be trying to keep the digest going
on the usual schedule. That's all I've got to say for now, so on
        with the show.

        New Album Marko <marko.lemieux@der.edf.fr>
I remember back in 1990, when Queensryche released the
single 'Last time in Paris,' we could foresee the general style
of the upcoming album, "Empire." Last summer, they released this
terrific song called 'Real World,' in which we find a powerful
combination of guitars, strings, and percussion.
Doesn't it remind you another fantastic album, from a
famous British band, "Days of Future Passed", by the Moody Blues?
On this album, we find the classics 'Nights in White Satin,' and
        'Tuesday Afternoon.'
Could it be that Queensryche is building a 90's version
of this album, a perfect fusion of rock'n'roll and classical
        music? I hope so!
{One never knows, but there have been rumors of
the new material being more ethereal than their
                        past work, and "Days" was ethereal.  -sh}

        Comic Review William <dhaller@umich.edu>
Well, the 'Queensryche Double Special' comic that I told
everyone about a few months ago finally came out today. I must
say, I am not impressed. It was advertised as "60+ pages of
Queensryche action" by which I thought it might be a fiction
involving the band. *BUZZ* Wrong! What it in fact included was
a signed copy of the FIRST Queensryche comic, plus the new
"Queensryche II" comic. I was not at all impressed with this
comic's interpretation of the guys. It covers everything from
the beginning of "Empire" to the end of, well, "Empire" and
"Operation: Livecrime." Geoff comes off as being homicidal, and
I am curious to know whether the origins of 'Empire' and
'Resistance' - and maybe 'Della Brown' - are based at all on
fact. The story of the comic - the recording of "Empire,"
"Livecrime," and 'Last Time in Paris' - is weak and aimless.
        Definitely not what I expected.

World Wide Web Page Nick <nk24+@andrew.cmu.edu>
I'm putting together a Queensryche page for the World
Wide Web - Mosaic and all that good stuff. The basic inspiration
is the Metallica page. Neither of the FTP sites mentioned in SiD
have much in the way of pictures of album covers. If I can't
find anything, I may have to see what I can do about scanning my
own in. The page should be up next weekend at the latest, and
        maybe even this weekend.
{Nick's going to need some folks with Mosaic to
test this for him. If you'd like to help out,
                        drop him a line.  -sh}

        Latin Hymn Title Jeremy <jeremy@eel.ufl.edu>
What is the name of the hymn sung during 'Suite Sister
        Mary?'
{I think it might be Dies Irae - the wrath of
                        God - but I'm not sure.  -sh}

        Lucid Dreaming Stephen <sgorny1@umbc2.umbc.edu>
In 1983 a study was done by Gackenbach and Schillig on
the phenomenon of "lucid dreams." A lucid dream is defined as
one in which "the dreamer feels he is suddenly in possession of
his normal waking memories and thoughts but knows that he is
        actually asleep and dreaming."
That kind of relates to the theme of 'Silent Lucidity,'
especially the spoken part behind the music. And people say that
all those long-haired rockers don't have two brain cells to rub
        together.

        Unplugged Bootleg Tina <tina.briones@ebay.sun.com>
My husband went to a CD store called the Compact Disc
Warehouse. He had heard they have lots of imports. He came home
4 hours and $250 later with 13 CD's. The one I wanted to mention
was the Queensryche "Unplugged" that he was able to find. It
cost $25 but it's cool. About half the songs are from the
unplugged show on MTV and the others are live from Tokyo Budokan
in 1985. The songs are 'I Will Remember,' 'Killing Words,'
'Della Brown,' 'Silent Lucidity,' 'The Lady Wore Black,'
'Prophecy,' 'Blinded,' 'The Lady Wore Black' again - one is live,
the other unplugged - 'Queen of the Reich,' 'Deliverance,' 'Child
of Fire,' 'En Force,' 'Warning,' and 'Take Hold of the Flame.'
This CD was imported from Italy. The writing on the
inside is Italian. This was the only copy but I'm sure they'll
get it again or at least they can get it if anyone's interested
        here in northern California.
If you can believe this, he wasn't going to give this CD
to me til our anniversary on 4/11 but I really wanted to know
what he was hiding so he gave me my gift early. I'm glad he
        didn't wait!

        Bootleg Questions Brian <lerxst@esy.com>
I am thinking of ordering some Queensryche bootlegs. I
checked the bootleg discography, and nothing was in there about
the quality, method of recording, etc. I was wondering if anyone
knew anything like that about these bootlegs:
"Walk in the Shadows," "Disease is Rampant," "Starting
Through," "Screaming Laughter," "En Force," "Might Makes Ryche,"
        and "Whispering Shadows"
I am thinking of ordering maybe 3 of them, and would like
a little info on which are best. I have "Unplugged...," "Queen
of the Reich," and "End of the Silence" if you can compare the
        quality to any of these.

How Did Mary Die? Keith <kmr100g@oduvm.cc.odu.edu>
I have only one answer, she hung herself. In 'My Empty
Room' the lyrics read, "Empty room today, and here I sit, chalk
outline upon the wall, I remember tracing it. A thousand times
the night she died, why?" When cops find people dead they trace
an outline to mark where they were found. The only way you can
have it on the wall is if they hang themselves. The first time I
met the band (their first tour after the release of Mindcrime) I
asked if she committed suicide. Geoff said, "Ding Ding ding, you
win the prize." The third time I met up with them I asked Eddie
if she hung herself. He chuckled and looked away and Frank, the
production manager, chuckled with him and told me "On the nose."
So, it seems pretty clear to me!
I think she did it because she knew Dr. X was going to
have her killed and she didn't want Nikki to have to do it (since
she knew X could get him to do it).

How Did Mary Die? T.J. <tjhiggin@alpine.b17a.ingr.com>
Note that "weasel" is a slang term for the male sex organ
        - e.g. "drain the weasel" means urinate. "Flesh ripped by
weasels" carries strong sexual overtones here. This would be in
line with the aforementioned "vibrating electronic appliances".

        Mindcrime Intro Carl <cs152012@linden.msvu.ca>
I was surprised when I read the last issue and saw the
thread on the "Mindcrime" intro. Shag, did you say the bits by
the nurse are original? I was in Boston for spring break, I was
watching the tube in the hotel room, and I caught a small segment
from an old movie that was playing. I remember it well because I
was bowled over when I heard, "sweet dreams... you bastard", and
it was the whole spiel from the intro on the album. I have no
idea what it was, but it was without a doubt the same as the
        soundbite on the record.
I only have a vague memory of this, I had just driven 12
hours, non-stop, to get there from here in Canada, and I was
tired, but I'm sure it's from a movie. Am I having delusions?
I feel another thread comming on, sorry to fan the flames. 8-)
{The "Mindcrime" credits say, "Nurse played by
Debbie Wheeler." I think it means she recorded
those lines for the album itself - does anyone
                        know whether she did them for a movie too?  -sh}

        Samples Tim <tswadzinski@amoco.com>
I think the hospital sample from the beginning of 'I
Remember Now' can also be heard at the beginning of Motley Crue's
        "Doctor Feelgood" album.
Can anybody verify this one for me? I think the sample
at the end of 'The Whisper,' where the woman yells "He'll kill us
all," is taken from the movie about Charles Manson called "Helter
        Skelter."
                        {Exactly right!  -sh}

        Geoff's Mother Arthur <arr@infinet.com>
In the last issue of SID someone asked about Geoff's
mother. That reminded me of a very old issue of a heavy metal
        magazine I used to read.
When "The Warning" first came out there were many
different activist groups coming out against heavy metal music
and musicians. In response to those groups Geoff's Mom sent a
letter to a magazine (either Circus or Hit Parader) defending
metal and using her son as an example. Does anybody else
remember this? Even better, could someone maybe type a copy of
        the letter here for us?

        Empire Single Wanted Terry <cygnus@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu>
I've been looking for the European CD single for the song
'Empire' that has 'Scarborough Fair,' 'Prophecy,' and 'Della
Brown' on it. It is an EMI release, numbered CD 560 20 4032 2.
I'm sure someone on this list can help me out. The cover was
designed by Pushead, the guy who did all the artwork for
        Metallica's t-shirts, etc.
If you can find this single in your local import store,
let me know how much they're asking, and we'll work out a deal.
I appreciate any help in advance.

I have a copy of the 1984 tourbook from the Warning Tour
for sale. It's in superb condition, and is a must for the
        collector. Only $7. 11.5" x 8.5", 20 pages, full color. It
features a write-up of the band's early history, classic early
photos and the group's "aspirations" for the future. Who knew
they'd turn into the monster progressive-metal mega-band they are
today? I also have Genesis, Yes, and Eric Clapton tourbooks.

Has anyone heard of any other truly great progressive
metal bands, like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, or Crimson
Glory? There don't seem to be that many out there any more.
Everything is Seattle grunge - which is ironic, considering this
is a Queensryche fan thing. If so, I'd love to hear about them.
Rock is in a major slump right now, and I need to hear some more
true talented music until Queensryche hits the stores.
{Everyone who is about to write in about other
cool bands, please e-mail Jayson directly. I
don't want 3 issues of "Related Bands" like
                        last time.  Thanks!  -sh}
