Relaxing the mind into the Alpha State

                          ALPHA AND THETA
                              AWARENESS
ELF-10C: A NEW BREAKTHROUGH IN STRESS MANAGEMENT
1987 by Alpha Energy Products, Inc.

Dramatic, new research now reveals an even stronger link between the brain
and body than was previously considered. Medical scientists have long known
that the brain is the control center for bodily systems, yet the immune
system was believed to be separate. However, the concept of an autonomous
immune system defies all logic. One researcher calls such a concept "a
headless horseman."1 Since the immune system is essential to survival, why
should we assume that nature has made an exception in this case to the
 brain/body link?

The misconception may stem from the fact that immune cells always were
tested outside the body, in a test tube. But their responses in this medium,
however dramatic, do not prove that the immune system functions without the
 brain.

"You can take the heart out of a frog and drip the appropriate groceries on
it, and it will continue to beat," says George Washington University
Immunologist Nicholas Hall. "This doesn't mean the heart functions in
  isolation of the body."2

Researchers now realize that the brain controls all body functions, and that
the brain and immune system are actually "hard wired," that is, linked
through an intricate connection of nerve fibers which channel chemical and
electromagnetic messages to and from the brain across a two-way network of
  regulatory communication.

The most dramatic recent evidence demonstrates the effect of emotions over
the immune system. Neurotransmitters, chemicals released by the brain, can
"latch on to immune cells and alter their ability to multiply and fight
  disease."3
In addition, the nerve fibers laced throughout important immunological
organs--the thymus, spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes--were shown to "link
up with lymphocytes, the small white blood cells that lead the body's battle
  against infections and cancer."4

One researcher, neuropharmacologist Candace Pert, from the National
Institute of Mental Health, says she believes much of this communication
between the brain and immune system concerns emotions. Neurotransmitters are
triggered in specific combinations by moods and emotions. "The more I look,
the more I'm convinced that emotions are running the whole show," she says.5
Pert and fellow immunologist Michael Ruff have discovered that macrophages,
large amoeba-like immune cells which comprise the immune system's first line
of defense, are slower and more sluggish in individuals who are made to feel

helpless. Most likely this has a direct relationship to triggering of
specific combinations of neurochemicals. Although this finding is by no
means conclusive, it implies that positive, optimistic attitudes may help a
sick patient end up better than those who have given up hope or resigned
  themselves to death.

Dr. Bernie Siegal, M.D., author of Love, Medicine and Miracles, says,
"Refusal to hope is nothing more than a decision to die." Dr. Siegal points
out a definite relationship between attitude and survival rates in seriously
  ill patients.6

No study of how emotions affect the immune system is complete without a look
at specific brain wave patterns and their relationship to individual well
being. Scientists have revealed some unquestionable facts about human brain
energies which are influential in the prevention of physical and mental
disorders, regulation of body functions and maintenance of total well being.
These brain energies are naturally inherent in everyone, and occur in
cyclical repetitions during the normal human sleep cycle. These energies,
most specifically alpha and theta brain wave patterns, may be induced
through resonance by natural sources such as the earth's electromagnetic
field, atmospheric electrostatic fields and planetary oscillations. These
influences will be explored in greater depth later in this report. Alpha and
theta brain energies also may be induced through artificial sources, such as
specially designed instrumentation like the ELF-10C. More on this also will
  follow.

How does the electromagnetic field of the earth affect living organisms?
This question has launched its own field of investigation at the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), out of concern for the well-
being of astronauts who spend long periods of time away from the earth. Much
of this information is confirmed by reports from the Soviet Union, since
their research in long-term manned space platforms far exceeds our own.

Many theories have been formulated about the characteristics of the earth
and its surroundings at its origin. Research by W.M. Elasser indicates that
any planet with the proper axial rotation will develop a magnetic field,
ionosphere and Van Allen Belts from which may be formed a large, round
resonator that will lie between the planet and the atmosphere.7

This live resonator cavity, through its own energy force, may have a deep
relationship to the very beginnings of life. This cavity was absolutely
resonant at 10 Hz.8. W.O.Z. Schumann, whose research charted the actual
frequencies of earth's electromagnetic fields, found this resonant cavity
oscillated between .1 and 100 Hz., but that it peaked at about 10Hz.

Utilizing a computer to observe bodily acupuncture phenomena, Japanese
scientist Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama found that the earth's electromagnetic and
atmospheric electrical fields influenced the electrical activities of
acupuncture points which correlate to energy levels of the autonomic nervous
  system.9

Although acupuncture is less than embraced in western culture, a NASA
investigating engineer, J.S. Beal, has taken the subject quite seriously.
Beal reports that acupuncture systems link man to his electrical
environment. Terrestrial magnetic fields have imposed frequencies as those
found in human alpha rhythms (7 - 14 Hz.). Furthermore, the earth's
atmospheric electrostatic field is influenced by the activity of the
magnetic field which propogates negative and positive ions, or aerions, at
right angles to the magnetic fields, and that these aerions travel in
opposite directions of each other (180 degrees). Beal states, "Obviously,
modulations in both electric and magnetic fields will, insofar as they
affect the travel of aerions, modulate the very subtle currents induced
through acupuncture points into meridian systems."10

As mentioned earlier, the Russians have demonstrated a particular interest
in electromagnetic fields (EMF). In support of the effects of terrestrial
electrical fields on acupuncture points, Russian scientist U.M. Dubrov
states: "Apparently, the processes which are closely associated with the
electrical characteristics of the organism react most sharply to changes
in the EMF. This is confirmed in particular by data about the electrical
activity of the skin integuments. Thus, during geomagnetic storms the value
of the skin's electrical potentials in man changes, and the asymmetry in the
distribution of these potentials on the skin is either strengthened or
disappears. A change in the electrical potential of the integuments can have
significant consequence since, when acting on the areas of the skin which
are, as is well known, the receptor zones and the unique 'external

representatives' (acu-points) of many internal organs, the EMF can also
affect the functioning. From the physical point of view, this would not
cause any objections, since the interaction exists between a constant
electrical flow and a magnetic field: these are the so-called galvomagnetic
effects which are particularly notable in semiconductor materials (the Hall
effect). Therefore, is it not possible that the EMF interacts with the
constant electrical currents which run in the neurons, and thereby affect
the central and peripheral systems by which a living organism is
  regulated?"11

How certain magnetic components of earth's force fields can penetrate man
and affect brain rhythms has also been investigated and reported by Y.A.
Kholodov.12 Another Russian scientist, U.M. Mikhovsky, substantiates the
claim that the effects of the earth's fields on organisms can be
artificially induced. Mikhovsky artificially produced 0-5 Hz. 1,000 gamma
waves and recorded the observation of theta waves (3.5 to 7.5 Hz.) in man's
  brain.13

In experiments with white mice, S. Lang used an artificially generated 10Hz.
field to explore its physiological effect. Lang observed: "If the hypothesis
that the natural 10 Hz. oscillations produce a measurable component of the
environmental conditions is true, it should be possible to reproduce almost
natural conditions through the creation of an artificial 10 Hz. step impulse
field in a faraday room." To conduct the experiment, Lang installed a 10 Hz.
generator into a room which shielded out all other types of electrical and

magnetic fields. When exposed to this field, the mice had greater oxygen
consumption, water content of the tissues increased slightly and blood
volume increased. Conversely, Lang also reported that the absence of the 10
Hz. field in the experiment caused the circadian rhythms of the mice to be
disturbed. He indicated it was beneficial for the mice to be in a 10Hz.
  field during activity periods.14

Researchers have even implied a connection between the body's healing pro-
cesses and the earth's EMF and atmospheric electrical fields. For nearly two
decades, Dr. R. O. Becker has actively studied the factors that initiate and
regulate healing mechanisms. He maintains that in the evolutionary process,
living things possessed an unsophisticated system of informing them "when
injury had been incurred and controlling the subsequent necessary repair
process." Dr. Becker points out that fluctuations in very weak
electromagnetic and electrical fields are capable of causing corresponding
changes in a system found in acupoints. It is possible this system senses
  injury and can affect repair.15

ALPHA RHYTHMS AND THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
The physiological action of alpha rhythms is that each polarity phase is
long enough to exert a chemical effect. Cells can be charged with alpha
energy, which can be stored and later released to other cells in some
  problem area.

Why these alpha waves are particularly effective is subject to conjecture.
Research has suggested that the alpha rhythms encountered in
electroencephalography are associated with the scanning process of the
afferent nerve pathways. Furthermore, when alpha rhythms are introduced via
the ELF-10C unit in the form of Alpha SoundTM, activity along the efferent
  nerve pathways is initiated.

This phenomenon is best understood through the principle of resonance. A
tuning fork, attuned to A-440, will begin vibrating when held in the
proximity of a piano on which the note A-440 is struck. Through resonance a
body can be induced into a state of vibration from an outside source when
the frequencies of the body and the incoming vibrations are of the same or
similar nature. Since the brain is a resonator, it can be induced into alpha
and theta states and transmit this energy along the efferent nerve pathways.

The ELF-10C instrument emits an alpha or theta tone through a headset.
Created by a patented process which superimposes inaudible alpha or theta
baselines over a specific audible frequency, this special pure tone is
easily sensed by the brain. In fact, this pure tone, entering the ear,
travels directly to deep layers of the brain.16 Then, when an alpha or theta
pure tone reaches deep layer of the brain, it initiates stimulation and
magnification of alpha or theta rhythms, which are found circulating
throughout the cerebral cortex. This facilitates deep mind and body
  relaxation.

Possible mind and body effects of alpha rhythms also are determined by the
mechanics of the central nervous system (CNS). Conditions of the body,
information about activity of the tissues, body fluids and general
environment of the cells, including energy levels, is transmitted to the
brain through the afferent nerve pathways. These afferent sensory impulses
are transmitted to various centers, ultimately reaching the thalamus,
sensory cortex and the psycho-associational cortex. At any one of these
center, afferent stimuli are transduced into efferent stimuli, or motor
impulses, regulating movements and behavior through the neuromuscular
pathways of the efferent nervous system. These impulses regulate visceral
function through the neuro-visceral system, the major portion of the
vegetative system, as well as impulses regulating the chemical processes and
the constitution of the body through the neuro-metabolic system. The
efferent, or motor impulses, are electro-chemical in nature.

Even the muscular movements which result from the production of a chemical
substance in the muscle termination (in this case the hormone
acetylcholine), are the result of nerve impulses and can be initiated
through the stimulation of the efferent pathways.

In addition to auditory stimulation, the ELF-10C induces alpha and theta
rhythms through the visual pathways. Utilizing the closed eyes as a window
to the brain, the ELF-10C introduces flickering lights and compatible
negative energies to the eyes. The result is a random pattern of flickering
colors that have the power to remove all anxieties from the mind. Because

the flicker rate of the special EyetronTM goggles is within the alpha or
theta range, the brain responds (through resonance) by matching the
frequency pattern of the flickering lights. In simple terms, the brain is
gently guided into alpha or theta awareness. This is accomplished through
"non-structured conditioning, a process by which the subject is gently
guided into alpha or theta states without discipline or active participation
in the relaxation process. Rather, it is a passive system in which the
subject only has to sit or lie comfortably without external distractions.
This process is simpler and quicker than bio-feedback, in which the subject
must actively concentrate upon relaxation as a discipline.

All of the mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of alpha and theta
rhythms are not fully understood at this time. As researchers continue to
explore this field, more data will become available. Concerning the ELF-10C,
one thing is certain: its predecessors (the Vibra-Mag. ELF-10 and ELF-10B)
have been on the market nearly ten years with no ill effects ever reported.
Use of the ELF-10C offers no known risks to the user. Its most dramatic
feature is its subjective effect upon the user. After non-structured ELF-10C
conditioning, subjects report clarity of mind, a feeling of relaxation and
cheerfulness. In clinical environments, the ELF-10 units have been used to
relax patients who are receiving intravenous chelation therapy, or prior to
chiropractic adjustments. One health center reported phenomenal results
utilizing the ELF-10B during colonic irrigation to relax patients during
  this normally uncomfortable procedure.

The ELF-10C is a valuable adjunct to all therapies. Elimination of stress,
tension and anxiety will greatly aid treatment of all debilitating
conditions of both mind and body.
