1: Overview of the FAQ

PART 1 (This part) A general overview of R.S.PW.F and
                Fantasy Wrestling in general.
PART 2 The Summit Federations FAQ
PART 3 The Independent Federations FAQ

This FAQ is archived off of the e-Wrestling Home Page:
        http://www.panix.com/~nexus/ewr.html

2: Charter

Below is the official charter for R.S.P-W.F taken from the vote
announcement.

CHARTER

REC.SPORT.PRO-WRESTLING.FANTASY will be an unmoderated group dedicated
to participants of fantasy wrestling. Its purpose is to provide a public
forum for play-by-E-mail (PBeM) leagues and public fantasy leagues to
post their FAQs, events, updates, interviews and statistics.

The following is a rough list of what should be included in the new group:

Should:
        - Wrestling reports (weekly taping results, "supercards", etc.)
        - Administrative stuff, notes to members, etc.
        - New league creation
        - Advertisement for existing leagues

2.A: Comments on the charter

While the charter contains no "Should Nots", common sense
        dictates a few:

        Should Not:
        - Which league is the best (they're all different and it's a
                very subjective topic.)
        - Anything about real pro-wrestling, use rec.sport.pro-wrestling

In general, communication from wrestling federation heads to
members might be considered fair game for the list. Notes
from individual members to federation heads should go via
        e-mail. This is simple netiquette.

The newsgroup should serve to supplement the traditional
methods of running a fantasy wrestling federation, not replace
them. For many of the functions of fantasy wrestling, an e-mail
        mailing list is still superior.

3: What is fantasy wrestling anyway?

Fantasy wrestling is any type of wrestling which does not
reflect actions in the real world of pro-wrestling. Within
that, there are many different variations. Some federations
create wrestlers out of whole cloth, some use real wrestlers
in unreal situations; some are booked, some use dice to resolve
matches, some go by vote; and so on and so forth.

All are there for the enjoyment of the players and readers, and
there really are not too many other generalizations possible.
That's why, in parts 2 and 3 of this FAQ, I've tried to list
the different groups with a short description of what they are
        and do.

4: How do I play?

That depends a lot on the specific fed or organization. Usually,
though, you can begin with a query to the person in charge and
        ask for more information.

4: Web Resources
As befits an electronic community, there are a number of
sites with Fantasy Wrestling related information, many with pointers to
each other.

6: Description of Some of the Rules Used

        A few general comments:
Face to Face games: these games are intended to be played
head to head, and when run via email tend to
require some or a lot of judgment calls by the
Federation Head. They also tend to have a lot
of detail and depth, but also tend to take a lot
                of time to run.

e-Mail games: these games are designed especially for
the idiosyncracies of play by (e-)Mail. They
tend to trade complexity of strategy for a bit
more ease of resolution and less need for
                judgment calls by the fedheads.

1: PWGeA Rules by Francois-Dominic Laramee
These rules are essentially face to face rules.
They are primarily move based, ie. a wrestler is defined
almost completely by what moves he performs.

2: OWCH Rules by Scott Baxter, and further modified in each
                   federation by the federation heads.
OWCH is an attribute based system, where scores
for Toughness, Power and so on are very important
and moves are less so. It is a face to face game.

3: WrestleScript/WRENCH by Bruce Onder and Jeff Berry
These rules were designed for e-Mail play. Originally
very simple, they have (in WS2.0/WRENCH) become a bit
more complex but maintain quick resolution. They
                are almost entirely attribute based.

4: WLS - Wrestling League Simulator
A computer program designed for either face to face
or computerized play. Mostly attribute based.

        5: FastMatch! by Jeff Berry
Designed specifically as an e-Mail game. Resolves
quickly and tries to provide support for a wide
variety of character types. The rules are almost
                entirely attribute based.

6: AWE adapted by The Homeless Phantom
Cobbled together from WWF and Coliseum rules, this
is still primarily a Face to Face rules set. It
uses both attributes and moves, with moves modifying
                attributes.

PART 2 The Summit Federations FAQ

Table of Contents
1: Introduction
2: The Summit Federations
3: Contact People
4: Details about the federations

1: Introduction
Wrestling by email, or e-Wrestling as Scott Baxter christened it,
has been around for quite a while. On the Internet, a number of names
crop up over and over again as players, federation heads and organizers.
Naturally enough, ties between the federations in which these
people were involved became closer and closer, and resulted in the
Summit of e-Wrestling, a regularly occuring interfederational event.
The Federations involved in the Summits are somewhat more closely
linked than many of the more independent feds, including those which are
migrating or expanding to the Internet from other networks, such as
AoL and Genie.

2: The Summit Federations
The Summit Federations, or Summit Wrestling Alliance (SWA),
or sometimes even Wrestling Alliance of Internet Leagues (WAIL),
vary as federations come and go, but at the moment consist of:

Allied Wrestling International (AWI)
The Electronic Wrestling Council (EWC)
The Electronic Wrestling Federation (EWF)
The Electronic Women's Wrestling Association (EWWA)
SLAM! Madhouse Wrestling (SLAM!)
Universal Superstars of e-Wrestling (USeW)
Virtual Championship Wrestling (VCW)

Also associated with the SWA is the magazine of e-Wrestling,
Ramblin' Round the Ring.

3: Contact People
The SWA Federations are sometimes looking for new wrestlers,
but more often are not, simply because they are filled to capacity.
A simple request to the appropriate federation head asking if they
have space is not amiss, though.

AWI: jmitche1@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu (Jerone Mitchell)
      ber3013@rs6000.ivcc.edu (The Homeless Phantom)
      ludator@io.com (Vox Ludator)
EWC: shawn7@freenet.scri.fsu.edu (Shawn Pearce)
      mfalkner@csd.uwm.edu (Mike Falkner)
EWF: jas30@postoffice.mail.cornell.edu (Josh Stein)
EWWA: ewwa@chattanooga.net (Andy Lipscomb)
SLAM: mlegare@wetware.com (Matt Legare)
USeW: crawford@sju.edu (Jeff Crawford)
      afn24324@freenet.ufl.edu (Matt Teeters)
VCW: nexus@panix.com (Jeff Berry)

4: Details about the feds by the federation heads themselves.
        STATUS is either:
                OPEN: accepting new wrestlers
                CLOSED: not accepting new wrestlers
                WAITLIST: maintaining a waiting list
        DIVISIONS reflects type of wrestling:
                M: Men
                W: Women
                *: Any gender
                1: Single
                2: Tag Team
                3: Three man teams
                L: Light Heavyweight

AWI: A ROLE-PLAYING GAME based upon the WWF Rules and Colisieum
rules, the AWI strives to be the epitome of realism and originality in
the world of e-wrestling. Strategy, wrestler design, and personality
development are stressed -- the only thing more important is NOT
COPYING EXISTING WRESTLERS!!!!! (sorry -- pet peeve...) Cards come out
        roughly twice a week.
        STATUS: CLOSED
        DIVISIONS:M1,M2,ML,W1

EWC: The oldest of the active Summit feds, this fed was formed
in the wake of the MBWF, one of the old Summit Feds, by
two of it's former members. Storyline is emphasized more
than sheer bloodshed, but we try to keep it interesting
Uses OWCH rules with some severe modifications (different
        from the EWF mods).
STATUS: CLOSED, due to size constraints
        DIVISIONS: M1, M2, ML

EWF: This nasty little fed got going during Summit VI with an ingenious
media blitz and a little begging from its fed-heads. Using their
modified OWCH rules they have quickly amassed over 100 wrestlers
and a reputation for letting chaos run rampant. According to some
it's just too much, to others it makes the EWF the GREATEST e-LEAGUE
OF ALL TIME, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Ahem. :-)
STATUS: BRIEFLY OPEN FOR PLAYER'S WITH SOME E-WRESTLING EXPERIENCE
        DIVISIONS: M1,ML1,M2,M3

EWWA: This league (after EWC, the second-oldest Summit league) was started
in June 1994 to give the women a place to compete. It is no longer
the only league taking women, but is the true "league of their own."
FastMatch 3.0 rules (with some modifications)
        STATUS: OPEN
        DIVISIONS: W1, W2

SLAM! - MADHOUSE WRESTLING:
What started as a renegade fed being run out of an RV as it travels
the highways and byways of America has become - a renegade fed being
run out of an RV as it travels the highways and byways of America.
SLAM! - MADHOUSE WRESTLING is a part-time e-wrestling fed being run by
the Amazing Mr. Jones (of Wild Hazard), a federation with few hard-
and-fast rules, a federation TO CONQUER THE VERY PITS OF
HELL... 'scuse me... gotta stop listening to those Debbie Gibson
        records...
Cards come out once a month, flashes come out when I have enough
stuff to put out. Angles and humor are greatly encouraged.
SLAM! uses the WRENCH 1.0 / WrestleScript 2.0 rules, as developed
by Jeff Berry and Bruce Onder. This is a semi-free-form system loosely
based on the OWCH rules, which allows for flexibility in scripting
matches and speed in resolving these matches, as the GM has a life, too!
SLAM! is currently semi-open (you have to impress me with a character
design and angle that I like).
        DIVISIONS: M1, M2, ML1

USeW: One of the more developed leagues as far as having e-wrestling legends
is concerned, but always looking for new talant. This league takes
        a backseat to no one.
        STATUS: CLOSED
        DIVISIONS: M1, ML1, M2

VCW: This federation was started in order to test out a new set of
rules which I hoped would allow different styles of characters,
reward well-thought out strategies, and resolve quickly. So
far it seems to be working out fairly well. FastMatch rules.
STATUS: CLOSED (TO SEE WHAT WE HAVE)
        DIVISIONS: M1,M2,M3

PART 3 The Independent Federations FAQ

Table of Contents
1: Introduction
2: The Federations and Contacts
3: Details about the federations

1: Introduction
Many federations are not organized into any larger structure,
and some are only loosely organized. Thus, they are Independants
as opposed to the SWA Federations, for example, which are
fairly tightly connected by the Summit.

3: Details about the feds by the federation heads themselves.
        STATUS is either:
                OPEN: accepting new wrestlers
                CLOSED: not accepting new wrestlers
                WAITLIST: maintaining a waiting list
        DIVISIONS reflects type of wrestling:
                M: Men
                W: Women

                L: Light Heavyweight

        STATUS: OPEN

        DIVISIONS: ML1,M1,W1,*2,*1,*1(under 19)

SdWF: Folded as of 8/21/95

TeWN: TeWN uses a set of rules that is the lovechild of OWCH, AWE, and PWGeA.
However, the rules are secondary to angles and interviews. The league
is open to anyone (the rules do assume that you understand the concept
of a wrestling match, ie that matches end on 3 count, etc.) and in
        fact we need players badly.
        STATUS: OPEN
        DIVISIONS: M1, M2, ML1

WCWF: Scott Keith writes:
It's a booked federation, with no input from anyone but myself on match
strategies or other things like that. The all important considerations
are the angles and feuds. The WCWF really has more in common with
comic books and soap operas than it does with wrestling. I do a
weekly Spotlight (if I feel like it :)) plus a PPV about every two
months, where all the major feuds and storylines come to a head. We
use real-life wrestlers, and NO E-WRESTLERS (that part is very
important). Participants choose a "stable" of about 5 guys, plus a
manager if desired. They decide who feuds with who, sign matches,
write up interviews or special pre-taped segments if they like. Once
the matches are signed, I write up the actual wrestling
matches and form the cards. We are independent of any other fed,
although I am looking for an e-fed to absorb someday.
STATUS: usually open, depending on how many people are currently signed
up. The limit is usually 20, to keep from going totally insane.
        DIVISIONS:

UCWA: I try and be as active with the handlers in the fed as I can, and keep
them updated on the going ons in the fed. We run 2 cards a week, one of
        Tuesday and one on Saturday.
I'd kinda like to think of the UCWA, and myself, as being very open to
first time players, and help them develop their wrestlers and their
personalities. I try and answer any and all questions to the best of
my ability about the fed and e-wrestling in itself.
As of right now, I have over 100 wrestlers, so there's not much room,
but if someone came to me with a good idea and a good angle, they would
get in. I don't like to shut the doors of the UCWA to new wrestlers.
        STATUS: OPEN
        DIVISIONS: M1,M2

WIWF: The WIWF unlike many leagues is not going to pop up and the fade out
faster than Barry Horowitz's win streak. We are unlike many Fed's as
we are not totally dependent on one system to decide matches. A lot
of that falls to the Handlers and their participation and the quality
of participation.Plus other things happening in the Fed at the time.
We are young yet we have many established Feuds going and almost
anything goes here. We are in the process of naming Champs through
the end of August and will have our first PPV around Labor Day. We
have two cards a week and all cards are fairly long
so there are no "Name" beat "Name" .....on these cards. We are opening
for a short period of time to let in New Wrestlers so please E-mail
me for info on how to start.
        STATUS: OPEN (as of 8/7/95)
        DIVISIONS:M1,M2,M3
