Since I cannot find my PDR I am going to be lazy and ask: Does anyone have
Abbotts phone number for product info?
Also: it was used a bit in the 70's and 80's as an anti-depressant
for adults. Cylert is a sched 4 medication. I think it got that because
it is related to by way of prescription the more harmful meds, like
Ritalin. There seems to be little evidence of abuse and or tolerance
self-administered increases in dosage. That is what I've been able to
find out, anyway.
With the stronger stimulants there is a 3 times a year limit for prescribing.
Does this apply in any way to Cylert.
(Personally I think it ridiculous to make this anything more than an RX, but
I think the FDA was writing with a very broad brush that day, when they
scheduled this one).
I am aware of the possible liver damage and advise against other meds that
cause the same. So far, liver function test come up normal. This is
after a very long time using the med as an occasional monday morning
let's get to work type pill. And as a partial replacement for nasties such
as prozac.
What advise, aside from calling Abbott labs and reading the packet insert
do those in the know out there have?

Shit, I'd forgotten about *that* one. I took a lot of it, a daily
regimen for about six months and finally gave up for lack of anything
including a hard-on.

That seems to be the case, but it's also the case that Cylert was never
on the US market in the late 60's and earliest 70's when drugs like
dextroamphetamine and Ritalin were last popular as mild "pick-me-ups"
for adults professing fatigue or mild depression. Cylert was
introduced only later for ADD, well after amphetamine and Ritalin were
essentially limited in what they could be prescribed for. That means
that Cylert never really was used in the same populations where abuse
was first noticed for the other drugs. That is to say, while there is
good evidence that it doesn't have the same abuse potential as, say,
amphetamine, the limits of its abuse potential if its use were less
regulated are really unknown.

C-IV drugs can be refilled 5 times in 6 months.

The FDA doesn't schedule drugs; the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration,
a division of the Department of Justice) does. In general, scheduling
decisions are designed to be in concord with WHO (a UN agency) policies
on dangerous drugs. I don't know what the status of pemoline is in other
countries. I _do_ know that Abbott attempted to have the DEA remove
pemoline from the schedules, and their petition was rejected.

I don't get the sense that there's much new research begging to be
performed on the drug; you can do literature searches and look up
the original research in a local medical library. But mostly, it's
a mild stimulant. Yawn.

I don't know if this would work for everybody, but I have several studies
that indicate that tyrosine has a remarkably benign action in raising
low catecholamine levels in some forms of bipolar depression.
The dosage levels are different for different people, so I'd start
with a small amount,but tyrosine doesnt have the major side effects
that a lot of prescription-only medications have{(it's an amino acid,
and is present in food in large amounts and recognized to be safe.)
I'd still consult your doctor if you have any medical condition, esp.
high blood pressure,melanoma, manic depressive syndrome,etc{..
but this has worked very well for me, I have to say it's changed my life.
I used to be a LOT more moody than I am now, and tyrosine doesnt have
andrug-like side effects..
Unfortunately the skeptic in me suspects that it's too good to be true,
and I expect it to be;lanned from the market very soon.
Don't want to cut into the big drug companies profits!
BTW- sorry about the line noise..
(also-don't mean to harp on this- there must be more than one person sick
of me ranting about this..tyrosine may have the ability to reduce the
desire for cocaine in long term-cocaine abusers.A friend is starting a study
on this now and I think it shows strong promise of being successful.
Also check out the "Lancet" on tyrosine for narcolepsy.A friend has been
able to completly give up his Ritalin after using it.He uses about 2 gr.
a day in the morning on an empty stomach{)

Despite the popular anecdotal impression,Vitamin B6 taken with tyrosine
inactivates some of it's activity,like L-dopa.Vitamin B6 should be taken
in the evening if you are taking large amounts of it.
And also a recent study has found Vitamin B6 to be toxic in large amounts.
Another study I have has found the strange combination of niacin,B6,
and taurine, qis useful in the evening to increase utilization of
dietary tryptophan (non-supplemental tryptophan{)
If you take it 1 hour or so before sleepin{ it seems to help insomnia,
(esp. when combined with a warm bath!)
High serotonin levels help with cocaine abuse too,I think.
(Such a shame they took L-tryp. off the market isn't it? Bet Valium deaths
-and profits have gone up since then!{)
By the way- in reading back through my letter I realized I didn't state
what large amounts of B6 were toxic. The study I saw stated that
amounts of B6 over 200 mg. a day can cause neurotoxicity. I stick to
50 mg. a day or so,(about 5 mg. in the morning, the rest in the evening)
BTW. if anyone is interested in this information who is involved in depression
or addiction research I'd be glad to send them copies of the papers I've
collected.(Please don't write me if it's just a personal interest, unless
you're a medical student,because I'm on a VERY tight budget,and trying to
start my own business)

You can get Pomo(tm) (pemolina, pemoline, Cylert(tm)) in Mex,
for $.75 a box. A few of us here used it a while in combination
with Piracetam. It was just a few daya of use, but I found there
was a significant increase in my output. I put NOTHING off, and
the amount of research I would pull in daily was mind boggling.
Of course, I was in the middle of a pretty hairy quarter and I
needed to get alot done (I might have done it anyway.) I did feel
more energetic and "smart." I suffered no ill effects except
for a mild headache after the first day of use.
A friend of mine reported a sort of anxiety, paranoia, or terror
attack after combining Pomo with an espresso. He also experienced
an additive effect (each day was stronger than the previous) and
this happened on the fourth day.
I was doing twice his dose and didn't feel psycho at all. I wish
I could remember the dosages. Mine was two capsules/day his was
one. I believe the capsules were 65mg each. I don't drink coffee.
The other two friends experienced marked enhancement in mood and
activity level with no reported adverse effects.
