__________________________________________________________ The U.S. Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Center ___ __ __ _ ___ / | /_\ / \___ __|__ / \ \___ __________________________________________________________ INFORMATION BULLETIN Apache Vulnerabilities on IRIX [SGI Security Advisory 20020301-01-P] March 19, 2002 00:00 GMT Number M-058 ______________________________________________________________________________ PROBLEM: Two vulnerabilities have been identified in Apache webservers shipped with IRIX. One vulnerability was found in the split-logfile support program and another was found when Multiviews are used to negotiate the directory index. PLATFORM: SGI systems running IRIX 6.5.12, 6.5.13, 6.5.14 prior to Apache version 1.3.22. DAMAGE: These vulnerabilities might lead to a root compromise in some configurations, and no local user account is required. SOLUTION: Apply the vendor patch. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is HIGH. A remote user may gain root access depending ASSESSMENT: on system configuration. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/m-058.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/20020301-01-P ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start SGI Security Advisory 20020301-01-P *****] -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: Apache vulnerabilities on IRIX Number: 20020301-01-P Date: March 15, 2002 Reference: CVE CAN-2001-0729 Reference: CVE CAN-2001-0730 Reference: CVE CAN-2001-0731 ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI provides this information freely to the SGI user community for its consideration, interpretation, implementation and use. A request with a specially crafted Host: header could allow any file with a .log extension on the system to be written to if the "split logfile" feature is in use, which is not the default. * A vulnerability was found when Multiviews are used to negotiate the directory index. In some configurations, requesting a URI with a QUERY_STRING of M=D could return a directory listing rather than the expected index page. SGI has investigated the issues and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. These issues have been corrected in IRIX 6.5.15, where we are now supplying Apache version 1.3.22. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- The Apache webserver is supplied with IRIX versions since 6.5.12m/f as a replacement for the older SGI FastTrack server. It is installed by default, and is enabled through "chkconfig" by default. In order to determine if an SGI-supported version of Apache is installed, execute the following command: # versions -b | grep sgi_apache If a line similar to the following line is returned, then a vulnerable version of Apache is installed: I sgi_apache 10/30/2001 SGI Web Server based on Apache, 1.3.20a If a line similar to the following is returned, then version of Apache that is installed is not vulnerable to the security issues addressed in this advisory: I sgi_apache 01/23/2002 SGI Web Server based on Apache, 1.3.22 These vulnerabilities might lead to a root compromise in some configurations, and no local user account is required. These vulnerabilities have been reported by ApacheWeek and have been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. http://www.apacheweek.com/issues/00-09-22 http://www.apacheweek.com/issues/01-10-05#security These apache vulnerabilities were assigned the following CVEs: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2001-0729 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2001-0730 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2001-0731 - ---------------------------- - --- Temporary Workaround --- - ---------------------------- SGI acknowledges that it may not always be possible to immediately install patches or upgrade the operating system. In those cases, we recommend disabling the Apache webserver by using the following command: # /etc/init.d/apache stop Then ensure it will not restart when the system is rebooted by issuing the following command: # chkconfig apache off For further insurance, you can uninstall it with the following command: # versions remove sgi_apache* It is not necessary to reboot the system after doing this. You should upgrade the operating system as soon as it is possible to do so. - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- SGI has not provided a patch for these issues, but instead has rolled the Apache 1.3.22 distribution into IRIX 6.5.15 and later releases of the operating system.
