PROBLEM:       A vulnerability exist with specific incoming ICMP Echo Request
               (ping) packets.
PLATFORM:      All HP3000 Series 900 systems running MPE/iX Release 5.0 and
DAMAGE:        Vulnerability makes it possible for an external user to cause a
               system abort.
SOLUTION:      Apply the available patches listed below.
VULNERABILITY  Any unpatched HP3000 series 900 system answering a Ping
ASSESSMENT:    requests can be shut down by an external user.

PROBLEM:  Vulnerability with specific incoming ICMP Echo Request (ping)

PLATFORM: All HP3000 Series 900 systems running MPE/iX Release 5.0 and

DAMAGE:   Vulnerability makes it possible for an external user to
          cause a system abort.

**REVISED 01**
SOLUTION: Apply patch NSTEDN1A to systems running MPE/iX Release 5.0
            and its Powerpatches (C.50.00 through C.50.06).
          Apply patch NSTEDL8A to systems running MPE/iX Release 5.5
            and its Powerpatches (C.55.00 through C.55.02).

   A. Background
      A mailing list disclosure described a vulnerability in which
      specific, illegally formatted, incoming ICMP Echo Request (ping)
      traffic could cause a system abort on HP3000 systems.

   B. Recommended solution
      The system administrator needs to obtain and apply the patches
      mentioned above.

   C. Fixing the problem

   1. Obtain the patch
      Obtain the appropriate patch from the HP Electronic Support Center,
      URL:    http://us-support.external.hp.com
           (US,Canada, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America)

              http://europe-support.external.hp.com  (Europe)

      Follow the "Patch Database" hyperlink from the HP Electronic
      Support Center home page.

   2. Apply the patch
      MPE/iX patches are unpacked using the UNPACKP script.  UNPACKP
      runs the MOVER utility to unload the truck file for the patch.
      Hyperlinks for the UNPACKP script and the MPE Patch Installation
      Guide are located on the main page for MPE/iX patches on
      HP Electronic Support Center.

      You need MOVER version A.00.02, EOF (end-of-file) 635, to unload
      MPE/iX patches.  You can download this version of MOVER from
      the HP3000 Web Server at http://jazz.external.hp.com.  Follow
      the Shareware and Sources & Binaries hyperlinks.

   D. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security
      Bulletins from the HP SupportLine Digest service via electronic
      mail, do the following:

      1)  From your Web browser, access the URL:

           (for US,Canada, Asia-Pacific, and Latin-America)

           http://europe-support.external.hp.com  (for Europe)

      2)  On the HP Electronic Support Center main screen, select
         the hyperlink "Support Information Digests".

      3)  On the "Welcome to HP's Support Information Digests" screen,
         under the heading "Register Now", select the appropriate
         hyperlink "Americas and Asia-Pacific", or "Europe".

      4)  On the "New User Registration" screen, fill in the fields for
         the User Information and Password and then select the button
         labeled "Submit New User".

      5)  On the "User ID Assigned" screen, select the hyperlink
         "Support Information Digests".

         ** Note what your assigned user ID and password are for
            future reference.

      6)  You should now be on the "HP Support Information Digests Main"
         screen.  You might want to verify that your e-mail address is
         correct as displayed on the screen.  From this screen, you may
         also view/subscribe to the digests, including the security
         bulletins digest.
