PROBLEM:       A security vulnerability has been identified by Hewlett-Packard
               in which certain malformed URLS can stop Web JetAdmin 6.0
               service.
PLATFORM:      Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
               Windows 2000
DAMAGE:        This vulnerability can cause a denial of service on the
               networked peripherals for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
               2000.
SOLUTION:      Install Web JetAdmin 6.0 (6.0.1233)

Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM: Certain malformed URLs can stop Web JetAdmin 6.0 service PLATFORM: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 / Windows 2000 only. DAMAGE: Web JetAdmin 6.0 service stops. SOLUTION: Install latest version of Web JetAdmin 6.0 (6.0.1233) AVAILABILITY: The new software is available after 21 June 2000. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. A. Background HP Web JetAdmin provides the ability to install, configure, manage, and troubleshoot TCP/IP and IPX connected devices on an enterprise's intranet. It contains support for all HP JetDirect-connected printers and plotters. This product allows users to manage HP JetDirect-connected printers using just a browser. This issue here has the potential of a denial of service (DoS) on networked peripherals for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. The software supports Windows NT 4.0 (Server or Workstation) and Windows 2000 (Server or Professional) platforms. B. Fixing the problem Obtain and install the latest release of Web JetAdmin 6.0, which is version 6.0.1233 from the following location: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/hpwebjetad1880_swen.html Internal HP SB REVIEW NOTE: Their release date must be 21 June 2000 or later. How can we (and cu.) positively identify it as such? C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security Bulletins from the HP IT Resource Center via electronic mail, do the following: Use your browser to get to the HP IT Resource Center page at: http://itrc.hp.com Under the Maintenance and Support Menu (Electronic Support Center): click on the "more..." link. Then - Use the 'Login' tab at the left side of the screen to login using your ID and password. Check with your system administrator to see if you have an existing login or use the "Register" button at the left to create a login. You will need to login in order to gain access to many areas of the ITRC. Remember to save the User ID assigned to you, and your password. Under the Maintenance and Support Menu, click on the "more..." link. Under the "Notifications" section (near the bottom of the page), select "Support Information Digests".
