*********************************************************************** DDN MGT Bulletin 75 DCA DDN Defense Communications System 1 Aug 90 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 235-3155 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MANAGEMENT BULLETIN The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network Information Center under DCA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.67.67.20] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". The pathname for bulletins is DDN-NEWS:DDN-MGT-BULLETIN-nn.TXT (where "nn" is the bulletin number). ********************************************************************** DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MAILBRIDGES/CORE GATEWAYS DDN Management Bulletin 74 defined MILNET gateway and host addressing assignments for acquiring Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) service and access to subscribers on the Internet. Please correct the Internet address given in that bulletin for the Randolph AFB, TX mailbridge to read 26.3.0.101. DDN Management Bulletin 74 incorrectly had this address as 26.30.0.101 (the correct host port is three, NOT thirty). In addition, it is emphasized that the 800 number provided in Bulletin 74 should only be used for questions concerning address assignments. All other problems (e.g., line outages and cross-network connection difficulties) should be first referred to the MILNET Trouble Desk serving the geographic area of the subscriber as follows: A. CONUS/Western hemisphere, except Washingon, DC and Alaska: 1-800-451-7413 or (202) 486-1982 or (DSN) 231-1787 B. Europe: (DSN) 314-430-5532/5534 or (ETS) 430-5532/5534 or (MIL) 2729-5532/5534 or (International) 011-49-711-687-7766 and 011-49-680-5532/5534 C. Pacific: (DSN) 315-456-1472/1473/1474 or (Commercial) 808-656-1472/1473/1474 and 808-624-3744 2. The following is an update on actions being taken to alleviate problems being encountered with the mailbridges: A. The seventh mailbridge at Randolph is scheduled for activation on 6 Aug 90. B. Cutover to the new assignments listed in DDN Management Bulletin 74 is scheduled for 10-12 Aug 90. C. Selected Air Force concentrators have been modified to access only a primary EGP server; this has resulted in a reduced demand for EGP service. Other gateway administrators are encouraged to take the same action if at all possible. D. Software changes have been deployed and successfully tested with Air Force concentrator gateways that permit negotiated EGP update polling for up to sixty minute intervals (versus the defacto default of three minute intervals). Other gateway administrators are encouraged to use this new feature as well. E. A positive exchange was held with Army, Navy, Air Force, and industry representatives on 20 Jun 90. This resulted in a common understanding of the complexities associated with gateway protocols and Internet routing issues and laid the groundwork for implementation of protocols beneficial to all. F. An extended outage of the communications link between the mailbridge in McLean, VA and the Internet node at College Park, MD has had an adverse impact on traffic between the MILNET and the Internet, as well as on network gateway updates from the Internet. This outage forces all traffic and updates to traverse the mailbridge at Moffett Field, CA and results in the inability to handle the offered traffic load and occasional loss of EGP updates. The restoration of this vital link is being actively pursued and we are evaluating the feasibility of establishing other alternate paths between the MILNET and the Internet. We are also working with the Army to off-load a major MILNET/Internet host traffic flow directly to the Internet. 3. Request widest dissemination of the above information. POC is Mr. Wayne Grindle, DOD, (DSN) 356-5030 or (703) 285-5030 or Mr. Dennis Morris, DRFD, (DSN) 356-5221 or (703) 285-5221.
