Unfortunately, several vulnerabilities were discovered in On-Line Customer Registration software subsystem which can lead to a root compromise on a local machine. Silicon Graphics Inc. has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. This issue has been corrected in future releases of IRIX. - ---------------- - ----- Impact --- - ---------------- The On-Line Customer Registration software is installed by default on IRIX 6.2 through IRIX 6.5 systems. IRIX 6.5 and newer systems are not vulnerable to this issue. On IRIX 6.2, the On-Line Customer Registration software is part of the whatsnew software subsystem which is installed by default. On IRIX 6.3 through 6.4, the On-Line Customer Registration software is part of the Register(1) software subsystem which is installed by default. A local user account is needed in order to exploit these vulnerabilities. The vulnerability can lead to a root compromise. Even if the On-Line Customer Registration software has never been used or configured, the software is installed by default and the following information is applicable. These vulnerabilities have been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. - ---------------------------- - ----- Temporary Solution --- - ---------------------------- Although upgrades are available for this issue, it is realized that there may be situations where installing the upgrade immediately may not be possible. The steps below can be used to remove the root compromise vulnerability by removing On-Line Customer Registration software subsystem. 1) Verify you have On-Line Customer Registration software installed. % versions -b whatsnew {IRIX 6.2} % versions -b Register {IRIX 6.3-6.4} I whatsnew 11/17/97 What's New, 6.2 I Register 04/30/97 Customer Registration, 1.3 2) Become the root user on the system. % /bin/su - Password: # 3) Remove the vulnerable On-Line Customer Registration software subsystem # versions remove whatsnew.registration {IRIX 6.2} # versions remove Register {IRIX 6.3-6.4} ************ *** NOTE *** ************ Removing the On-Line Customer Registration software subsystem removes the ability to electronically register. 4) Return to previous user level. # exit % - ------------------ - ----- Solution --- - ------------------ For those customers that do not use the On-Line Customer Registration software, the software should be removed using the steps outlined in the "Temporary Solution" section above.
