        Title: Vulnerability in infosrch.cgi
        Number: 20000501-01-P
        Date: May 22, 2000
______________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

The Infosearch(1) subsystem is used to search and browse virtually all SGI
on-line documentation. The infosrch.cgi(1) is a program that allows access
to infosearch(1) through a default installed HTTP web server on port 80.

Unfortunately, a vulnerability has been discovered in infosrch.cgi(1) which
could allow any remote user to view files on the vulnerable system with
privileges of the user "nobody".

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures
be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. This issue has been
corrected in future releases of IRIX.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The infosrch.cgi(1) program is installed by default on IRIX.

A local account is not required to exploit this vulnerability.

This vulnerability can be utilized to view files on the local system with
the user privileges of "nobody".

This vulnerability has been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups
and mailing lists.

- --------------------------
- --- Temporary Solution ---
- --------------------------

Although patches are available for this issue, it is realized that
there may be situations where installing the patches immediately may
not be possible.

The steps below can be used to disable the infosrch.cgi(1) program to
prevent exploitation of this vulnerability until patches can be installed.

     1) Become the root user on the system.

                % /bin/su -
                Password:
                #

     2) Change the permissions on the infosrch.cgi(1) program.

      =================
      **** WARNING ****
      =================

Removing the permissions from the infosrch.cgi(1)
program will prevent non-root users from using the Infosearch
subsystem through the HTTP web server.

                # /bin/chmod 500 /usr/lib/infosearch/bin/infosrch.cgi

     3) Return to previous level.

                # exit
                %
