at school we have recently gotten internet access and they've installed the default thing for
skewl internet. it's called I-Guard and it's made by URLabs.

I-Guard is a proxy that filters "inappropriate content" from entering your skewls computers.

now this 'exploit' may not work on every computer (they've fixed it at our skewl)

i think the skewl is supposed to use Nutscrape Aggrivator as the browser of choice.

blah, this doesn't need to be a long textfile, so here's what you do:

if your school DOES use a proxy to filter stuff, just click on
Options, Network Preferences.... and then click on the Proxy tab.

it should be set on Manual Proxy Configuration

just change it to No Proxy and browse away, no login/password, and NO filtering.

this happens because of a frame-relay problem, and i dunno if it just happend at our skewl, or
if it's nationwide. if your skewl has the internet and this doesn't work, email me with some
info on it (eg: the ip address of your school, the ip of the proxy) and i'll see what i can do

another way is to just use the IP address. now, for a quick rundown on how the internet works:
when you type in "www.infoseek.com" you're not actually going to www.infoseek.com. as far as
the internet goes, everything is based upon four sets of numbers. they are in the format of
255.255.255.255

to get the ip of "www.infoseek.com" just click on Start > Run.. > type 'ping www.infoseek.com'
it will run a simple program that "pings" the server (to see if it's still alive) but it also
gives you the ip address of whatever hostname you entered. at the moment, i don't know of any
programs that come with windows 95 that lets you just resolve the ip address, but if you use
ping and jot down the number next to it, then you can goto the actual ip address. for instance,
204.162.96.76 = www.infoseek.com.  after all, isn't it easier to rememeber www.infoseek.com
rather than 204.162.96.76?

anyway, the proxy at our skewl uses this filtering technique that scans the page for
inappropriate content. but they've also banned stuff like www.rootshell.com (500+ searchable
exploits), www.thc.com (just some pictures of bongs and stuff), and www.alsscan.com (and
extremely adult site, but it doesn't use graphic language).

if i want to goto www.rootshell.com from school it will ban www.rootshell.com (if i type that in)
but when i resolve the ip address (207.110.0.206) it will let the page through. neat huh?
if you know of an easier way to resolve the ip address of a host (a program that comes with
windows, i know there are a lot of other programs that will do it) then email me

(also, the proxy at my skewl is an http proxy, which means you can ftp to anywhere with NO
filtering.)

that's it for now

happy hunting,

rootwurm (rootwurm@pheces.org)
