Red Box Plans Note: The Red Box is obsolete for long-distance calling nearly everywhere in the world that it used to work.

Red Box Plan by Fu5|0n
----------------------------

Step One: "Building the box"
----------------------------

So you wanna build a red box (that thing that makes coin tones for a payphone). Well look no further this guide will take you step by step through the process to build a good one.

estimated cost: under $10
Materials Needed
----------------

A Tone Dialer with memory
(recommendation radio shack #43-146 There on clearance now so get one fast)
A 6.5 mHz crystal (available through mouser.com
Soldering Iron
Solder
Wire cutters
Philips head screwdriver (a small one)

Ok first thing place the dialer face down (so the speaker is facing you) and open it up by taking out the screws and popping it open. Next locate the crystal inside. On the older models it looks like a silver hotdog. On the newer ones it's insulated and say z3.something on it. Ok now de-solder that crytal and take it out. You can chuck it if you want seeing as it has no real use in life. Now take the 6.5 mHz crystal and solder it in place of the crystal you just took out. Now hit the buttons and make sure it works. A high pitched tone should come out of the speaker. Now close it back up and you have a red box that needs to be programmed.

Step Two: "Operation of your box"
---------------------------------

Ok now all you have to do is program it. Assuming you have the Radio Shack 33-mem tone dialer you can do it as follows. Slide the swiitch on the side from dial to store. Press memory, *,*,*,*,* , memory, then p1. Now the qurter tone is stored to p1. Do the same for p2 accept only 2*'s to make it dime. Then do p3 as 1 * for nickel. Now return the switch back to dial. All you have to do is press p1 for quarter, p2 for dime, and p3 for nickel. Now go have some fun on those payphones.
