Alright, first of all, Redboxing is obtaining free fone calls from payphones and yes, it still works in 1999, except on protected phones. You may have to search around for a while and find a good payphone, but it will pay off in the long run. When you put a coin in a payphone, it creates a tone, one beep for a nickel, two for a dime, and five for a quarter. The Redbox mimics these tones, making the phone think coins were put in. A redbox is fairly simple to build. This text will explain how to modify a Radio Shack tone dialer to create a redbox. All costs add up to about 15 to 25 bucks.

1. A Radio shack Tone Dialer Model #43-146, (this model has memory presets, so you can program quarter tones and costs $24.99, or you can save 10 dollars, and buy model #43-145 with no memory presets, and create only nickel tones.)

2. 6.5xxx Mhz Microprocessor crystals (www.mouser.com for these)Note:the particular crystals may not work..They are very cheap, try different kinds of 6.5's.

3. Access to a soldering iron

4. Experience soldering

5. Three AAA batteries

6. Small phillips head screwdriver

7. Some luck

Open up your tone dialer, and find the existing crystal. The crystal is orange and on the model #43-146, it is marked with ******, and on the #43-145 the crystal is marked with *****. Alright, on the model #43-145 bend the two silver diods out of the way. For each crystal there is a small amount of glue on the back, just bend the crystal up until the glue seal breaks. Next, with your heated soldering iron, melt the solder on the bottom of the crystal, not letting the solder from one side melt into the other(this is critical). Melt one side, and remove that side of the crystal. Next, melt the other side and pull out that end of the crystal.
Now, get your new 6.5xxxx crystal ready, you may need to trim the connecters on it. Now melt each already existing solder dot, and place the crystal in. Make sure the connections are tight, and NOT TOUCHING. Now close up your tone dialer, and put the batteries in, and test it out. The star (*) key is the correct tone. Follow the instructions that came with your tone dialer to program five stars (*).If you dont have them they are below.

1. Turn on tone dialer

2. Flip store switch up

3. Hit memory

4. Hit star 5 times (quarter) 2 times (nickel) or 1 time (nickel),
then hit memory again.

5. Lastly, hit the desired position, P1, P2, P3, or 0-9.
