GET THEM NUMBERS

There are several ways to get ESN numbers. First is to extract number (ESN) from working phone. Second is to read number off of the phone or the carton the cellphone was shipped in. Third is to "make up" a number. Fourth is to "steal".

First three are obvious, last one is more difficult, and illegal. To get ESNs off of airwaves, pirates use a scanner, demodulator (black box), ESN formatting software and computer to intercept ESN as they are transmitted by nearby cellphones to cellsite. This device is most popularly know as an ESN "snatcher" or "scarfer".

The device was originally designed and sold by the Kurtis Company but only to cellular repair facilities and law enforcement. Use by repair facilities is legal. Use by persons intent on defrauding cellphone owners or operators is illegal.

There used to be several individuals selling "Black Boxes" to do the same thing. You supply computer and scanner, they supply software and interface to demodulated NRZ binary information. Prices range from about $400 to $3,000 and up.
