a lineman's headset will do the trick. Specifically a blue or 2 tone orange
one as to they are data sensitive.

From: "Me" <Dontemailme@mycomputer.net>
Date: Fri, 01 Mar 2002 01:03:07 GMT

I have a rather unique problem. I have been asked if there is any way to
locate a payphone when I have the number only. I tried the obvious first - I
dialed it. After 10 or so rings, I got a sound similar to a modem or fax
machine.
I have tried all of the reverse directories I can find, but none have it
listed. The area code and prefix turned up numbers in the French Quarter
area of New Orleans.
The number was on the caller id of a friend of mine's when his daughter
(who has been missing for a week) called him. Hecalled the police, but they
say they can't get the location of the phone without a court order.
The number is 504-523-9160. If anyone can help me out, you can either
post here or email me at Mick@dccomm.net . Even if you can point me in the
right direction to get the info myself, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mick

The police can't get the location of a phone without a court order? I don't
see why. Incidentally, the modem sound means that this is probably a COCOT,
i.e. non-Bell owned phone, although it could be one of them new-fangled
Bell-owned computerized phones. If the police are really that incompetent, you
could try calling that area's local telco (maybe Southeastern Bell? I doubt
that they'd help but worth a shot), or you could just keep calling and calling
it until somebody answers, ask them where it is.

I have a telemarketer calling 2-3 times per day, the number shows up in
call display, when the phone is picked up they hang up.

calling the number back (416-922-4734) gets me a mailbox which is always
full.

calling the operator got me a rude, we cannot do anything for you sir!

a search of the net gave me the information that it is a telemarketor, in
toronto. and the have been reported to the CRTC in 1999!

what can I do legal or not to pay this company back?

While scanning 1-800-205-00xx I came across a few numbers that caught
my attention. Maybe someone could help me out here.

1-800-205-0031 A long loud tone, then the line hangs

These three say "restricted area code" and then hang
1-800-205-0071
1-800-205-0073
1-800-205-0094

Finally this last one says "Enter your telephone number including area
code"
1-800-205-0081 (Will try this one later at a pay phone)

If anybody has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated

If you was more active, search "reverse search toll-free" on yahoo and
you gonna get www.anywho.com and tollfreephone.com and lots more. It
doesn't work everything, but it's better than nothing.

You can pick one up pretty cheap on ebay, just do a search for "sim card"
and you'll see ads for dozens of them.

If anybody is bored and wants to bother someone, here's a number for
you

512-476-2827

Ask for William Brennan

Oh yeah, and is there a way of finding out if someone's home number
can be dialed as an 800 number? While scanning I keep finding home
phones, and I am curios. If so, it would save a lot on long distance.

You could have scammed the original poster by offering, in private, to
sell this top-secret information that you acquired at great personal
risk and expense =) And at the same time helped to not perpetuate
usenet trolling.

Well, I call it using a "search engine." THey're these crazy things
that "search" the "intar-web" (that's the INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY)
once you "input" a "query" from your "computer."

Great Job! How bout bothering this one 417-293-0925.

These jerks have called 83 times this week using a un-traceable
identity. I have narrowed to a Tracfone prepaid calling card and the
lec can do nothing to block with selective call rejection because it's
wireless WalMart. mmmm :(

Thx JJ

Can you please steer me in the right direction. I need to "procure"
my girlfriends cell phone voice mail password. When i dial in and hit
the star key it switches over to voice mail and asks for the password
and I have tried all the standard birthdates, addresses, phone numbers
etc...Any suggestions as how I can get in? She's out of the country
for the next few days and does not have access to her phone, a perfect
opportunity to see who's leaving her messages and what shes up to
behind my back-

Can this be done on my own, or do I need the assistance of a pro who
would be well taken care of.
Thanks,

I can think of only one possibility: if you have access to one of her
old cellphone bills, the password might be the last 4 digits of her
account number. If that fails, try the last 5, 6, 7, 8 digits, and if
that fails, sorry, but you needed to shoulder surf her or something
before she left.

Does anybody know what's going on when you pick up the phone and there
is a broken up dialtone. It sounds like when you are talking to
someone then decide to make a 3 way call. It happens for a couple of
seconds, then I get a normal dial tone. I tried this on both my phone

yet my Caller ID displays a number in New York? I've been getting calls from
a friend of mine who says she's in Hong Kong but many times when she calls a
(212) area code number pops up on my Caller ID. The other times she calls it
displays "Out Of Area". Any thoughts on this??? Thanx!

Two possibilities:

(1) They are actually calling from 212, and aren't in Hong Kong after
all,

(2) (More likely) they are using some crappy long distance company
that can't pass the original Caller ID data (if any) and you are
getting the directory number of their outdial in New York (and if they
even need one of those, then they really are crappy!)

They did at one time, but they aren't in existance anymore afaik, and they
weren't exactly like text files glorify them.
You can do almost the same thing with a DATU, except the conversaion is
scrambled and you can't stay on the line as long.

>On an unrelated note does anyone have any wierd 555 numbers?

555 is an unused prefix, set aside usually for media, like when you see "call
555-love" on a movie or whatever.
If I keep dialing any 555-xxxx number, the first call brings an out of area
message, the next, your call cannot be completed, next "blocking is now off"
twice, then another message and the whole thing loops. Thats weird.

So I was going for a coffee in the local downtown mall today, when I
noticed that the Millennium payphones in the bank nearest the ground
floor washrooms now have Bell (Canada) logos on them! These phones
are in 250, Telus country, and used to have Telus logos (and
originally, had BCTel logos as they were installed circa 1996).
There's nothing on Telus' web site about selling off payphone
locations to Bell Canada - or of a merger... anyone in 250/604/778
know anything that Telus isn't telling us about this?

My attention, by the way, was drawn to this bank of phones because one
of them was ringing - not impossible, as I have shown in the past, but
very unusual here. All the payphones in that particular mall
(Victoria Eaton Centre, if you need to know) had earlier been verified
as NOT accepting incoming calls.

If Bell Canada is running these phones, but Bell Canada is not the LEC
here in BC, but they ARE an LEC somewhere else, does that make them
BOCOTs or COCOTs or a completely new flavour of COT?

Was it a ringback/proctor test ring or an incoming call ring? In my
area, the rings are distinctly different.

I know what a ringback ring sounds like (we used to be able to provoke
it by dialing 311); this was a normal ring.

If a third-company has taken over the phones, they may have been
reverted to vanilla POTS lines.

I've heard many reports of Verizon payphones being un-phreakable. I was
wondering what the new standard is from the times of ma bell? What can and
can't be done, and what people have done. I'm trying to put together an
article on it for something or other, so any information would be
appreciated. You'll get a little plug in at the end if it gets published
anywhere, and as always regardless of whether or not if it published it will
be available to the public. Any information is welcome.

Thanks

Well... as Chessucat demonstrated, you can use a search engine to try and find
more information.
Also you can use a reverse lookup, like the one at www.infospace.com

 =============================================================

I walk in to hear the dreaded phone ringing - I glance at my watch,
7:55am;
damn its early. I decide not to answer it after finding that
daydreaming is much more fun.

I hear footsteps, and see Gwen walk into the employee lounge and sit
next to me.

"James, you're here on time. Iam confused - you're NEVER ... Why are
you early? Oh, wait, no - if you're thinking what I think you're
thinking ... NO! I wont have sex with you in the frame-room!"

"No, No. I dont want ... Well, unless you want to ... No, Gwen, Iam
just here early. Thats all. I had the worse dream last night."

"Oh; how bad was it?", Gwen eyes soften and she reaches over and grabs
my shoulder.

"It was weird, I had fell into the depths of hell. Are you familiar
with Dante Dante Alighieri's vision of hell in that book Inferno?
Where it's frozen cold and "sinners" are sentenced to stay frozen in
ice from their necks down? I went there! I was Dante!"

When I looked up at her, I knew that the compassion that I had
expected wasn't coming. She made a little gasp and smiled. Like I had
just told her a stupid joke.

"You weren't smoking anything before you went to hell, right?"

"NO! I mean it, it was scary. I dont know what to make of it."

"Maybe your subconcience is telling you something ..."

"WHAT!? Is it true? Am I subconciously trying to banish the Imitation
Operator from Hell? Am I only now meeting my greatest foe? Am _I_ my
greatest foe? Maybe I should try to be nicer to callers from now on
.... To save my soul ... maybe I should ..."

*Ring*

*Ring*

Oh damn, the phone's at it again.

"Hello, Verizon, This is Jamie - how I can I help you?"

"Yes, errr uh, something is wrong with my cellphone. I uh, changed my
phone number about an hour ago and the other operator said that it
should work by now. She also said that if it didn't work, to call you
guys."

"Oh, could I get your cellular phone number, please, including the
area code."

"40432, 19, 013"

Usually, people with NO phone number rythym would piss me off, big
time. But, iam turning over a new leaf. Iam not going to let this
bring me to hell. I can over come this.

*tap* *tap* *tap* *tap*

I punch in his phone number and find that the idiot operator that
tried to help him earlierdidn't register his number. But, she entered
her ID # (I've recognized all of the ID #'s that belonged to the hot
chicks working in my building) on the customers form under "Last
Serviced by:". Maybe I could use this as grounds to ask her (the idiot
operator) out to lunch or to grab a cup of coffee or something.

"okay, did you already re-program the number into the NAM?"

"Excuse me?"

"I guess not. Okay, you have an Erricsson T19LX, correct?"

"yes".

"Okay, I want you to press #, 0, 0, 1, 6, 7, #, * and press yes. Does
it say DANGER?"

After waiting for about five minutes ... He decides to finally let me
know that he's still alive.

"Excuse me? What did you want me to press?"

"#, 0, 0, 1, 6, 7, #, *, yes ... It should now say DANGER!"

"Okay. uh-huh, it does now say DANGER!"

"Good. Press yes. It should display your ESN or Electronic Serial

yes again to make it go away. It should now ..."

"Wait, wait ... What does ESN stand for again?"

"It doesn't matter. There wont be a test after this session."

"okay".

"It should now say something along the lines of ENTER NEW NUMBER. Do
you see this?".

"Okay."

"Now enter in your new number. 404, 321, 9013 and press yes. After you
do this, your phone will restart".

"What do I enter as my new number?"

"The phone number you gave me earlier."

"What phone number?"

"Sir, whats your cellular phone number?"

"40432, 19, 013"

"Yes, *THAT* number. Punch in *THAT* number*

"Okay, now what do I do?"

"Did you press yes?"

"No."

How stupid can this guy be? He has no phone rythym and hasn't cought
onto the fact that he should press yes everytime he's finished
entering in a command.

"Well, sir, press yes"

"Okay, now what?"

"Thats it, sir. You're phone should work fine. Try making a local call
with it right now."

I can hear his phone beep after every digit and then I hear him let
out a soft "YESSSS!".

"Okay, its working. Thank you SO very much!"

"YOu're welcome. Thank you for calling Verizon ...."

I can't help it, the Imitation Operator from Hell _MUST_NOT_ be kept
under lock and key!

"Sir? Are you still there?"

"Yes."

"From all of us at Verizon ... Fuck you, and I hope you have a shitty
day!"

*click*

The operator is back! Oh well, there's 8 minutes that I'll never see
again. I walk into the employee lounge and pop in my pirated edition
of RollerBall. That L.L Cool J guy really is one of the worse black
actors I've seen in years. I then take the time to change my bosses
screensaver to say "I molest my children whenever Iam not banging my
secretary. Oh god Iam horny!" and password protect it. That'll show
him! Damn Windows 98'er!

I drop a few slugs into the coke machine and fortunately enough, I
hock myself a free PEPSI. I walk to my panel singing to myself that
new PEPSI theme "ba ba ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba ba ... The Joy of cola
....".

The ol' light's ringing again. I need to hear ringing. Hrmmm, I flip
the magical switch and tada, it starts singing to me.

*ring*

*ring*

I like to let them wait. Hopefully, they'll hang up.

*ring*

*ring*

*ring*

Oh, we've got a persistant bugger. Here we go ....

"Thank you for calling Verizon, this is Jamie; how can I help you?"

I here a sound that went something like *beep* *pleep*
*kssshhhhhhhhh".

"Check your CallerId!", the voice yells to me.

"I check our ANI unit and it displays a phone number. Okay, its a
casual residential line, whats the big deal?"

"Excuse me?"

I hear the noise again! and to find out what he's trying to do - I
check the ANI unit again. It hadn't changed. It dawns on me what he's
trying to do. He's sending in CLID information! He doesn't know the
difference between ANI and CLID! This should be fun, I load up S.O.B
Version 1.0 (come on, be serious, you know that we _ALL_ have it).

"Look, kid! I have the same program you do!"

I play a few exported .wav's to him and then laugh. The other end
becomes silent; I can only imagine him on the other end - discovered,
scared, probably shitting in his pants while holding down the mute
button.

"Let me tell you what, I'll help you out a bit. We have ANI units,
kid. CLID is used only in our telemarketing department because we dont
give a shit about them. anyways. I'll just hang up on you now, okay?
bye, bye!"

*click*

I grab a roster labled "Trash" off of someones desk, Hrmmm, its the
DATU RT Users manual with all of our dial-ups on it. Whew, talk about
a secure team. I innocently write down the kids phone number, just in
case it gets boring later on tonight .....

This bitch wouldn't be your mom, would it?

I have files on several Audiovox models on artofhacking.com, and I
think I saw a 4000 model in there somewhere...

*69 and the like are CLASS services (FYI), of which should always have
a means of blocking *67'ed (sending a P bit /w the CLID info) calls. As
was said before, look through you local yellow pages (or white pages) to
find what to press to activate this service (blocking anonymous calls).

*THEN* several things could happen (its better to be aware of these):

1. he could just op divert the call and bypass CLASS services all
together (usually reading "Out of Area" on CLID units).

2. He could use a calling card (same here).

3. payphones are always an option.

4. On a more advanced note, he could bluebox the call. Seeing that c5
wasn't made to pass ANI or CLID.

5. He could be stupid enough to "un-block" his CLID info, and in which
case ... he's fucked. *BUT* if he's stupid enough to let himself get
into trouble ... more power to you my friend. more power to you.

Of course, the option to "call trace" is always there. *BUT* You will
not get any information. Call trace logs can only be given to law
enforcment agencies - and can't be shown to the public. So, you'll end
up having to go to court (if they catch him) and miss a day of work.
So, that way sucks. Dont trace his call. Its for fucking wimps.

I could have gone more in depth about tracing the line yourself, but
it seems that you wanted a legal, easy way to go on this one.

I tried dialing a LD number to redbox earlier this week and noticed that while
the "please deposit..." message was playing, there was what sounded like
background music. Is that to deter boxing or was I hearing things? Also when I
used another ma bell phone today, I deposited one quarter but only heard a
click, no quater tone, after depositing my second quarter however, I heard what
sounded like a double-quarter tone (10 beeps). Would anyone be able to like two
quarter mp3's together to test it? Can anyone verify my observcations?

If you're really in deep shit, you can always just get a frying pan, heat it
up on high in the stove, and touch the bottom. It'll hurt like hell, but you
sure won't have anymore fingerprints for at least 2 weeks (if ever)
As for th second question... take the whole thing.... or whatever you can
get off of it.

Does anyone know if this works? If you want the file send an e-mail to
Widget9545@aol.com Sorry about the pics.

*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*
* How to "steal" local calls from most Payphones *
*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*-+-*
                           by the Jolly Roger

Now to make free local calls, you need a finishing nail. I highly
recommend "6D E.G. FINISH C/H, 2 INCH" nails. These are about 3/32 of
an inch in diameter and 2 inches long (of course). You also need a large
size paper clip. By large I mean they are about 2 inches long
(FOLDED). Then you unfold the paper clip. Unfold it by taking each piece
and moving it out 90 degrees. When it is done it should look somewhat
like this:

                               /----------\
                               : :
                               : :
                               : :
                               : :
                                          \-----

Now, on to the neat stuff. What you do, instead of unscrewing the
glued-on mouthpiece, is insert the nail into the center hole of
the mouthpiece (where you talk) and push it in with
pressure or just hammer it in by hitting the nail on something.
Just DON'T KILL THE MOUTHPIECE! You could damage it
if you insert the nail too far or at some weird angle. If this
happens then the other party won't be able to hear what you say.
You now have a hole in the mouthpiece in which you can easily insert the
paper clip. So, take out the nail and put in the paper clip.
Then take the other end of the paper clip and shove it under the rubber
cord protector at the bottom of the handset (you know, the blue guy...).
This should end up looking remotely like...like this:
                            /----------\ Mouthpiece
                            : :
            Paper clip -->  :          :     /
                            : /---:---\
                            : : :
                            :------------>
        ====================\---))):
                                   :  To earpiece ->
                                   ^ ^
                                   \-------------------->
                                   : :
                                   : :
                                 Cord Blue guy
(The paper clip is shoved under the blue guy to make a good connection
between the inside of the mouthpiece and the metal cord.)
Now, dial the number of a local number you wish to call, sayyyy,
MCI. If everything goes okay, it should ring and not answer with the
"The Call You Have Made Requires a 20 Cent Deposit" recording. After the
other end answers the phone, remove the paper clip. It's all that
simple, see?
There are a couple problems, however. One is, as I mentioned
earlier, the mouthpiece not working after you punch it. If this
happens to you, simply move on to the next payphone. The one you are
now on is lost. Another problem is that the touch tones won't work
when the paper clip is in the mouthpiece. There are two ways around this..
A> Dial the first 6 numbers. This should be done without the paper
clip making the connection, i.e., one side should not be connected.
Then connect the paper clip, hold down the last digit, and slowly
pull the paper clip out at the mouthpiece's end.
B> Don't use the paper clip at all. Keep the nail in after you punch
it. Dial the first 6 digits. Before dialing the last digit, touch
the nail head to the plate on the main body of the phone, the money
safe thingy..then press the last number. The reason that this method
is sometimes called clear boxing is because there is
another type of phone which lets you actually make the call and listen
to them say "Hello, hello?" but it cuts off the mouthpiece so they
can't hear you. The Clear Box is used on that to amplify your voice
signals and send it through the earpiece. If you see how this is
even slightly similar to the method I have just described up there,
kindly explain it to ME!! Cause I don't GET IT! Anyways, this DOES
work on almost all single slot, Dial Tone First payphones (Pacific Bell
for sure). I do it all the time. This is the least, I STRESS
*LEAST*, risky form of Phreaking.

I was unable to update this one. From what I recall, it stil worked.
Look for payfones w/o the little volume button in the upper left of the
casing. They should be old enough to use.. -Exodus-

I actually still have a cache version of it. All of the pictures are
gone, which kinda defeats one of the main purposes of the file (I made
schematics, and had pictures of my jbox) and the links no longer work.
Most of the text just covers the different aspects of international
blueboxing (accessing BY VFY trunks both KP1 and KP2, non-PCM R2
signalling, CCITT 4 pulsing, guard tones, et cetera ...) with a
JollyBox. If you still want it, respond to this post and then I guess
I'll just send it to your posting address ;)

okay if they just have caller id and nothing else on there line they
won't be able to get your number when you dial *67. but if they have
ani on there given line they will be able to get your ani. if you
think they have ani op divert and then you will be safe.

you really have to be careful who you op-divert through, always check first
to see if it passes ani by op-diverting a call to an anac to make sure..
also, i thik its at&t that passes your ani, only to other at&T numbers..
maybe ic0n can clear that up a little more than i can

Okay, since they're only renting the WATS # in question (aren't we
all?),
they WILL have (and can request) a copy of their telephone bill which
will have transcribed EVERY NUMBER that called in (along with all
outgoing toll charges). They COULD just write down the time/date the
call took place and wait till their bill comes in to get back at you.

And obviously, there's ANI, which is already intigrated with WATS
lines. If they have a ANI console (box) then there's practically
nothing that you can do about them having your number (seeing that
small CLECs are practically the only people that DONT forward ANI
packets now-a-days).

Now, as with CLID (what most people use as "unwanted caller
protection"); you're safe with *67. ANI is the only way that they'll
end up catching you (dont worry 'bout it, when voIP phones start
getting intigrated with residentials, this wont be a problem anymore
[can we say major bugs?])

ANI is present on many commercial WATS lines, and especially on those
operated by resellers of WATS service. But personal WATS is really
just a forwarding service - someone calls your toll free number, the
call gets forwarded to the residential POTS line of your choice, and
you have no opportunity to even request ANI terminal equipment (the
telco would just tell you, being a residential subscriber, to get
Caller ID). So ANI isn't something you have to worry about on a
real-time basis. However the service provider DOES get ANI and
doesn't necessarily directly pass Caller ID, instead opting to
synthesize it themselves from their ANI data. This is, theoretically,
when Caller ID boxes can receive supposedly-blocked numbers. If
there are any Toll-Free services out there that do this I'd like to
get a list of them.

In fact such a service, implemented deliberately as opposed to
negligently as I suspect it may, could command a premium rate among a
certain clientele. Hmm, maybe I should move this to
biz.opportunities...

However, most personal toll-free services, especially those run by
major long distance companies, pass Caller ID verbatim, and if it's
blocked, tough shit. Those same companies are likely to print
"Private" or "Out of Area" on the bill.

If it's a personal toll free number, they almost certainly don't have
ANI. However, they may get your number on their bill at the end of
the month - personal toll free numbers are usually itemized as if they
were outgoing calls. That said, it's also possible that the toll-free
provider would print "Out of Area" or "Private Caller" on the bill for
such calls.

Hello, I've waited here for you, everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into

Come down and waste away with me,
down with me

Slow how, you wanted it to be,

I'm over my head, out of her head she sang

And I wonder; when I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again.

The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

She sang ...

Breathe out, so I can breathe you in;
hold you in...

And now, I know you've always been;
out of your head, Out of my head I sang

And I wonder, when I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again

The only thing I'll ever ask of you

Does anyone have one that they can verify *right now*?
Thanks,

In the alt.2600/#Hack FAQ it mentions how to check if you have a valid
credit card number using an algorithm. I was wondering if there was a
similar way to check to see if you had a valid calling card number.

Yes you would need to know someone with about 20 of the same calling
card and you should be able to get a few free calling cards.

Hey all,

Has anyone ever tried constructing Video Vindicator's "Rock Box"?
I think Fixer's Box Review gave it a low plausibility rating, although I'm not
sure as I don't have the URL on hand. I'm working on a new project, and I need
something that will provide a CLEAN audio connection to my line. I used to have
a Rat Shack telephone recorder dohicky that claimed it could channel audio into
the line, but it never worked for that purpose. I would like a "do-it-yourself"
kind of project anyway. I could care less about recording. I just need
something for playing tones into the line. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
CT

I'd suggest building something like the Inter Box. I think you can
find that file on artofhacking.com (Tucops:Phreaking:Boxes). There
may be something you can get at Sh1tshack that does more or less the
same thing too (other than the recording interface, I have that thing
too and it's crap).

The Box Review's main criticism of the Rock Box and its immediate
siblings is that the author of the text file obviously (to anyone with
a technical background) had no technical background, and was in no
position to be telling people how to mess with their phones.
