Do you feel like spending $30+ for a two line phone when you know the only difference between a two and a one line phone is a few wires? If you answered yes to the former and no to the latter, the fuchsia box is for YOU. If you have two separate phone lines (not home "wats" lines), you can now have the power to decide which line to use, put a caller on either line on hold, and connect two callers together (3-way). What do I need to build a fuchsia box? -------------------------------------- You can build the fuchsia box for about $2.98 assuming you have a few odds and ends lying around the house. Materials: 4 DPDT Switches 4 Alligator clips (or 2 'male' and 2 'female' modular adaptors )-(2 conductor) 2 470 Ohm resistors 1 Spliced modular plug (2 conductor) 1 Empty butter dish with lid (or other suitable container) Soldering gun, solder, and electric tape Prepping the phone lines ------------------------ Open up the wall jack on each line. You will notice four (4) wires in each, the traditional defaults are red, green, black, and yellow. Despite what anyone may have told you, you will NOT need to use the black or yellow wires from the wall to build your switch (unless you decide to have illuminated switches on you fuchsia box, i.e unless you're a pompous, trendy ass). As neatly as you see fit, hook up the two-conductor-cable to the red and green wires, and run the cable out of the jack, and replace the jack. Do this for both phone lines. Now permanently fasten a red aligator clip to the red wire, and any other color clip to the green wire. You might want to tape the alligator clips to the cable in such a fashion so that they will not come in contact with each other. Should they come in contact with each other, you will have static out the ass, which you do not need. If you really want your wall connections to look nice, you can rig up a 'female modular in' jack instead of the exposed alligator clips. I use the alligator clips myself. If you really don't want to open up your wall jack, use a spliced two conductor modular plug running into the jack (NOTE: these are second/third spliced modular plugs in ADDITION to the one listed in the materials list), but make sure you know which wire is red and which is green. Now that you have prepped both lines, you're ready to build the box itself. Constructing the actual box --------------------------- I've always found text-schematics confusing as hell so I will do this in a slightly different style. Each number represents a terminal on one of the DPDT switches. LINE SWITCH HOLD LINE A HOLD LINE B CONFERENCE (up=A down=B) (up=ON down=OFF) (same) (same) **RES** **RES** _________ _*_____*_ _*_____*_ _________ | | | * * | | * * | | | |01 04| |07 10| |13 16| |19 22| | | | | | | | | -ph-02 05-ph- 1G-08 11-1R- -2G-14 17-2R- |20 23| | | | | | | | | |03 06| |09 12| |15 18| |21 24| |_________| |_________| |_________| |_________| Things indicated in *'s are the resistors, and anything with a -- is an cable in/output. The "ph" in/output is to the spliced piece of modular cord (which plugs directly into your phone itself. The "1G" "1R" and "2G" "2R" go to separate cables and stand for line 1 green, line 2 red, etc. Now you are ready to make all the connections. First solder the resistors in place, then the in/output cables, then all of the necessary wiring. 07-resistor#1-10 13-resistor#2-16 02-phone-05 08-line 1 green 11-line 1 red 14-line 2 green 17-line 2 red 01-09-20 (this means run a wire from terminal 01 to 09 to 20) 04-12-23 03-15-19 06-18-22 In case you're wondering, terminals 21 and 24 should be left empty. Making it look nice ------------------- Take a butter dish and poke 3 holes in it with a pencil. Run the phone wire, and the each of the 2-conductor cables through a hole. With a knife, cut a rectangular window in the lid of the dish to mount the switches on. Stuff all the wires in the container part of butter dish and fasten the switches on with screws. I suggest you label each of the switches so you don't forget which one is which. Close the lid and you are done with the construction. Setting the fuchsia box up for use ---------------------------------- This part is EASY. Simply take the each of the conductor cables in hand (each one should have a spliced red and green wire). Clip the two red alligator clips to the two red wires (one per line). Same applies with the green wires. (Or if you're Joe Phone Stud, just plug in your modular plugs). You're set. How to operate the fuchsia box ------------------------------ The LINE switch is for selecting which line you want to talk on. If you want to talk on both lines, turn the CONFERENCE on. If you want to put line A on hold, turn the LINE A HOLD switch to ON. The same applies to line B. To hang up one line, turn its hold switch to OFF, then select the LINE switch to the line you do NOT want to hang up on i.e., the line you want to TALK on. To hang up both lines, turn both HOLD switches to OFF and hang up the phone. Unless you have another phone hooked up to either of the lines, your phone will not ring unless the LINE switch is selected to the line that is ringing. ___________________________________________________________________________ <___________________________________________________________________________> That's it. As far as I know, it's not illegal to build one of these puppies, but hopefully y'all can find SOME illegal use for it. ___________________________________________________________________________ <___________________________________________________________________________> Thanks to Jimi Hendrix whose music I listened to constantly during the design, construction, and documentation of the fuchsia box. ___________________________________________________________________________ <________________________Picasso Double 5/19/87_____________________________>
